Simi Garewal – a lady who has very beautiful hair, posture, elegance etc. was born on 17th October – turns a year older today. She played a teacher to a teenager Rishi Kapoor in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970) and is Manoj Kumar’s fiance too. Three years later, she played Amitabh Bachchan’s friend in ‘Namak Haraam’ (1973) when that character needed an emotional support when he felt betrayed by his best friend. But these were not her first appearances in the film industry.

Simi was first seen in 1962 releases ‘Tarzan goes to India’, ‘Son of India’ & ‘Raaz Ki Baat’ (1971 UR). I remember seeing her on television when Doordarshan screened the 1965 films ‘Teen Deviyan’, ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’, & ‘Do Badan’. All of these films may not have had Simi as the central character, but she was noticed for her style and apparently westernized way of carrying herself.

She depicts similar style in today’s song too. She looks as if the song is a mirror of her real life attitudes. The song is from the 1977 released, Asrani directed film ‘Chala Murari Hero Banane’. The song shows Simi trying to teach Asrani, who has newly attained stardom, the ways to cope with the ‘filmy way of life’.

The song is written by Yogesh & RD Burman has composed it in the manner of “Mera Naam Hai Shabnam” from ‘Kati Patang’ (1970). The main difference being the ‘Kati Patang’ song was filmed as a club number & today’s is a road-song.

Happy Birthday to the actress, producer, director, television program host Simi Garewal on turning a year older. Born in the year 1947, she 76 years old today.

On this blog we have at least two movies (that I came across) where the movies have made their debut with songs originally part of some earlier movie and not really part of the movie being discussed.

One such movie is ‘Salaam Memsaab-1979’.

This movie made its debut on the blog with a re-used song ‘pyaar huaa ikraar huaa hai’ which originally is the song from the movie ‘Shri 420’.

So, today we get introduced to the actual first song from this movie ‘Salaam Memsaab-1979’ on the blog.

“Salaam Memsaab-1979” was directed by Asrani for ‘Roshan Films’. It had Asrani, Zareena Wahab, Manju Bansal, Rehman, Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Jugnu, Leela Mishra, Sulochana (Senior), Tom Alter, C.S. Dubey, Arvind Rathod, Anand Girdhar, Amol Sen, Dilip Tahil, Neelu Arora, Master Jeetu, Yusuf, Raju, Ranjeet and others.

Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Yogita Bali and Rishi Kapoor made a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.01.1979.

“Salaam Memsaab-1979” has seven songs (other than the song of Shri 420 which was re-used) written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman.

While presenting the ‘used’ song of ‘Shri 420’ from this movie Shri Sudhir ji has mentioned about the background of the story of this movie ‘Salaam Memsaab-1979’ in brief. I am re-producing the same below.

Radha (role played by Zarina Wahab) and Sunder (role played by Asrani) are two young people, friends and in love. They are the street tamaasha people who sing and dance on the roadside to earn their living. Sunder has high aspirations, and wants to become rich quickly. Radha also has aspirations, but she is averse to making compromises with her principles of honesty and truthfulness. They work together, but this difference in their view of life generates arguments.

This background helps us to understand the context for the today’s songs (multiple versions) in this movie.

The duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar gives us an idea of the ‘initial song’ when Radha and Sunder must be performing their ‘roadside tamaasha’.

The second part (or version) of this song which is a female version sung by Lata Mangeshkar seems to happen when Radha and Sunder gets separated and are not in touch with each other.

However the video for the third version which is sung by Kishore Kumar is available and from the video we can guess that Sundar had already become a rich person but missing Radha and he sings this version at a party held by other actress (Manju Bansal) I guess.

The verses by Majrooh Sultanpuri are very nice and so is the composition by Pancham which deserves to be well known. Kishore Kumar has sung this song with gusto with Lata Mangeshkar supporting him equally. However, I guess that the songs from this movie seem to have forgotten may be because the movie itself didn’t performed well at the box-office.

I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Wishing the followers of the blog A Very Happy 2023. Hope the year brings joy & contentment to one & all.

Presenting a fun song to start the year. It is from the 14/11/1986 released “Insaaf Ki Awaaz”. It was directed by B. Gopal, who was essentially a director of Telugu films who had also directed two Hindi Films, the other being “Kanoon Apna Apna” (1989).

“Insaaf Ki Awaaz” (IKA) was produced by D. Rama Naidu, who had produced close to 130 films in 13 Indian languages before he passed away in 2015. His other Hindi films were ‘Prem Nagar’ (1974), ‘Dildaar’ (1977), ‘Anari’ (1993- the Hindi debut of his younger son Venkatesh), ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ (1999), ‘Aaghaaz’ (2000), ‘Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein’ (2002)- all of which were remakes of his successful Telugu films.

‘IKA’ starred Rekha as the avenging angel (a cop too), with Raj Babbar as her husband and Anil Kapoor as her brother. Richa Sharma, Nilu Phule, Sushma Seth, Anupam Kher, Shafi Inamdaar, Gulshan Grover, Roopesh Kumar, Tej Sapru, Jagdeep, Parikshit Sahni, etc formed the rest of the cast. Of course, ‘IAK’ was a made in South film, so it needed Kadar Khan, Asrani and Aruna Irani. Aruna Irani & Asrani formed part of the love triangle with Jagdeep being the 3rd angle. Kadar Khan was the head of the villains brigade with Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, Roopesh Kumar and Tej Sapru were the rest of the brigade.

Just by telling that Rekha played an avenging cop we should understand what the story of the movie was. I had not seen it at the time of the theatrical release but got to see it last week, when some channels were screening Anil Kapoor films. I have read somewhere that Anil Kapoor was mighty pleased when Rekha was roped in for the role which Smita Patil was going to play originally; he was a huge fan of Rekha.

‘IAK’ had music by Bappi Lahiri and songs written by Indeevar. Today’s song is a parody where we have Aruna Irani torn between her husband Jagdeep and paramour Asrani. They mouth a parody of songs that were famous in the 80s, all Bappi Lahiri creations. The songs have been rewritten to suit the situation and recorded in S Janaki- Kishore Kumar voices.

Wishing Govardhan Asrani- popular simply as Asrani- on turning 83. He has acted in close to 350 films, mostly as a comedian. He has also produced and directed a few films. He was first seen as Biswajeet’s friend in “Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan” (1967), and then followed ‘Satyakam’, ‘Mere Apne’, and and and numerous other movies where he had some memorable role. ‘Sholay’ gave him a new identity and he was made to enact a caricature of the ‘angrezon ke zamaane ka jailor’ in many movie that followed.

Happy Birthday to this versatile actor who was last seen in ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ (2021 which was a sequel of the 2005 hit).

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 25

This discovery of a repeat song will have to be termed as Mother of All Repeat Songs. And just in case, before you start wondering whether poor dear me has decided to take a step off the deep end, let me explain.

Ostensibly searching for something else totally disconnected with repeat songs in Hindi films, I chanced to read this caption on a YouTube link. The face in the thumbnail image is neither Bharat Bhushan or Shashi Kapoor. And so, intrigued as I was, I clicked on the thumbnail with the face of R Madhavan, to play this song whose caption was sounding so very familiar. It turns out, yes, it is a repeat song – a repeat of the very endearing and a must-have favorite from the 1969 film ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’. This signature track has been the theme of many an amorous message of love for the connoisseurs of the Hindi film music.

Ah, but the story of my discovery had just started. I checked out the name of the film. Turns out it is ‘Dil Vil Pyaaar Vyaar’ from 2002. I track down the Wikipedia page of this film. I had not heard of this film earlier. The story line weaves around the romance lives of young friends. Seemed like a run-of-the-mill rom-com tales that abound the landscape of the Hindi film world. An immediate analogy that came to mind, from the era familiar to me, was ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ of 1957. Similar theme, romance tales of three young friends.

Ah but what wonderful and divine music that film has. I will not dwell on the delightful music created by the legendary Madan Mohan – I am sure all readers and friends are already very much taken in by the songs of that film from 1957.

Getting back to ‘DVPV’ (‘Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar’), I was thinking – seems like the producer of this film did not have much imagination to engage song writers and MDs to create some fresh songs. So he chose to easy route to re-use this song.

But as I continued down the Wikipedia page, and reached the Soundtrack section, my eyes remained agape in wonder. The film has 13 songs listed. And (OK now, hold your breath) – ALL, I repeat ALL songs are repeats of earlier hit songs of the 60s to 80s time period. Looking closey at the list, the second realization, and a big one, hit home. ALL the thirteen tracks are creations of RD Burman. Now this discovery surely something great and different.

A little more research and I am able to locate more information online. The producer of this film is a diehard fan of RD Burman and the music created by him. And this film ‘DVPV’ has been created as a tribute for his favorite MD. So, a story and a screenplay was conjured and 13 of RDB’s famous hits have been woven into it.

The producer of this film is Vivek Vaswani. As it turns out, he himself is the author of the story line of this film. The screenplay has been adapted from the story by Sujit Sen.

Of course the credits for the song will remain with the original creators. But for this film, the music for the songs has been re-arranged and re-recorded by Babloo Chakravorty. So all songs in this film are recorded in different voices.

Ah yes, in case you are wondering – yes, I plan to bring on board all the thirteen songs of this film, in good time. Quite a bonanza here for this series.

This wonderful song from ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’ has been re-recorded in the voice of Hariharan. On screen, it is performed by R Madhvan. I am sure all are familiar with this new name. My introduction to Madhavan has been through the 2009 hit film ‘3 Idiots’. I will try to say more about this film and its performers, in subsequent episodes, as I venture to cover all the songs of this film.

Other actors we see in this clip are Asrani and Namrata Shirodkar. The wonders that a song can do has not changed across the decades that Hindi films have been created, exhibited and watched. It has only become better, more imaginative and more incredulous. In the very early days of this blog itself, Atul ji had come to a conclusion, and he has so documented it in many a write up. That a situation in Hindi films takes about 3 minutes or so to be transformed. All it takes is a song. The song starts in a particular mood, with a particular expectation, and by the time the song ends, the desired mood and desired outcome is achieved and the expectations realized. In many earlier such discussions, we have seen quite wondrous and amazing things happen during the duration of a song.

With this song, things are no different. Rather, the stretch on the gullibility of comprehension is a bit too much. Madhavan is on a stage, participating in a music competition. Things to be noted about the setting. The stage where the performance happens is designed like a music CD. And the effect is complete with the singer handling a very old fashioned standing microphone. The antics Madhavan attempts with this mike takes us even further back to Elvis Presley performing live on stage, back in the 1950s.

His lady love, Namrata, is at the airport, already checked in for a flight that will take her thousands of miles away to another country, away from her beau. And voila. A ‘strategically’ placed TV screen within her view starts to telecast the music competition just as Madhavan is to present his song. The song starts. It is the replay of the famous aria – this one, from ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’.

All it takes in one stanza for the lady love to make up her mind to abandon her plans to leave the country, and she decides to go back into the beckoning arms of her lover. The second stanza is even more wondrous. The lady exits from the airport, starts to drive to where the competition is in progress. And, another VOILA – this time in capital letters – she drives through the Bombay traffic, with all her memories about times spent with her lover replaying on the mind’s screen, reaches the location and is on stage with her lover, by the time the second stanza comes to a close. And yes, even has time for a change of attire. The applause by the audience is still in progress as she makes an entrance through a hazy and foggy doorway, with the director making utmost efforts to make it appear like a fairy descending through the clouds.

I remember having seen a cartoon long long back advising filmgoers to please leave their logic and reasoning outside the door, when entering a cinema hall to watch a Hindi film (or maybe any film for that matter).

So mission accomplished. In less than three minutes, from the verge of just starting to board her flight, the lady love makes it from the airport to the competition stage and into the arms of her lover.

Long be loved – the wondrous Hindi film song. Yes, all it takes is a song.

“Trimoorti” (1974) was produced and directed by Rajendra Bhatia. It had a cast of Parveen Babi, Kanchan Mattoo, Arpana Choudhary, Sanjay Khan, Rakesh Roshan, Asrani, Achala Sachdev, A.K. Hangal, Arvind Trivedi, Gulshan Bawra, Krishnakant, and I.S.Johar, Parveen Paul, Keshto Mukherjee, Sarita Joshi etc. Its music director was Rahul Dev Burman and Gulshan Bawra was the lyricist.

The blog has this song which was posted in 2017 on Parveen Babi’s anniversary.
I was reminded of this movie when I saw one of its song on some channel. The song had Asrani, Sanjay and Rakesh Roshan uniformly dressed. That made me wonder “what is happening!!!” as actors normally like to standout or look unique etc. I also saw a few other songs and in most of these the heroes are uniformly dressed. I haven’t seen the movie but I presume there must be an element of comedy in it if the song with this post is an indication. It has Asrani, Sanjay and Rakesh Roshan pampering their mother in the voices of Nitin Mukesh, Kishore Kumar and Bhupinder.

4th January is the remembrance date of Panchamda, a.k.a. Rahul Dev Burman. 3rd January was the 81st birthday of Sanjay Khan and 1st january was the 82nd birthday of Govardhan Asrani known popularly as Asrani. ‘Nikaah'(1982) was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie had stars Raj Babbar, Deepak Parashar, Salma Agha, Asrani, Iftekhar etc. Originally titled ‘Talaaq Talaaq Talaaq’ led to protests from Islamic clerics so the title was changed to ‘Nikaah’ This movie was Bollywood debut for Pakistani singer-actor Salma Agha whose grandfather Rafiq Ghaznavi was a well known music director of Hindi movies during 1940s.

The movie had six songs in it. The songs of the movie were extremely popular during its time.

Today 15th October is (15.10.1922) is ninety-eighth Birth Anniversary of the genius music director Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi or known popularly as Shankar of Shankar-Jaikishan duo.

He was born on 15th October’1922 at Hyderabad Deccan in the then state of Hyderabad.
And left this mortal world at the age of sixty-four on 26th April’1986 at Bombay.

As a tribute to him I am presenting a song from the 1977 movie ‘Duniyaadaari’.

One beautiful song from this movie has been posted on the blog on 15th October’2012 which was ‘naao kaaghaz ki gehraa hai paani’ …

As we are all aware the golden period of Shankar-Jaikishan was already over as the HFM embarked in the decade of seventies. The lot of R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji and many others were already producing chart burster music that was getting popular among the masses.

I would like to reproduce the ‘text’ here what Atul ji had said about Shankar-Jaikishan and the ending of their ‘era’ in his article while posting the first song of this movie ‘Duniyaadaari-1977’.

Shankar Jaikishan, the most dominant music directors during the golden era of Hindi movie music ruled the roost for two decades from 1949 to 1968 till R D Burman rose like a meteor and changed the rules of the game.

Many other developments took place during that time. One of those developments was that Jaikishan died in 1970 and that way the Shankar Jaikishan jodi was physically separated. Moreover, “Mera Naam Joker” (1970) flopped and after that Raj Kapoor made up his mind to overhaul his musical team making a clen break from his tried and trusted musical team of the past two decades.

Shankar continued to compose music under the name of Shankar Jaikishan. But the time passed, assignments from top banners gradually dried up and Shankar ended up composing music for lesser banners. His songs from mid 1970s onwards were not quite as popular as the music of his heydays.

Nevertheless, Shankar composed some memorable songs even in his second innings as a solo music director, even if they are not as well-known as the music of his earlier decades.

Today’s movie is one such movie whose songs are quite nice and were popular I think (since I have not watched this movie) and other notable movies to mention I think is ‘Sanyaasi-1975’ whose songs were heard everywhere on radio and loudspeakers. Songs of ‘Resham Ki Dori-1974’ were also nice songs if we consider them as composed by Shankar solely.

In the previous month while paying our tributes to Jaikishan on his Remembrance Day I had mentioned about the year 1971 and had wrote that; -“Shankar Jaikishan ruled the music charts in 1971 with their ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhaana’ ranking top of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list. ”

In 1971 Shankar Jaikishan composed music for as many as seventeen movies out of 115 released movies that year. Moreover there was an un-released movie as well viz. ‘Bombay Talkie-1971’ making it a total of eighteen movies for the year for Shankar Jaikishan.

That was for 1971. Let us now have a look on the number of movies in which the name of Shankar-Jaikishan appeared as Music Director from 1972 to till 1977.
(we will again have a look on their filmography from 1978 to 1986 in future posts).

Coming back to today’s movie now ‘Duniyaadaari-1977’, it was directed by Ram Kelkar for ‘Filmnagar, Bombay’. Ram Kelkar was also the writer of this movie. It was produced by Sohanlal Kanwar. Smt Vijayalaxmi was the co-producer of this movie.

The song was embedded deep in my subconscious memory and I had forgotten about it. It was only during last year when I was in Kenya that at some instance I broke into humming (singing could also be the correct word? 😊 ). B. R. Chopra’s romantic comedy “Pati Patni Aur Woh”, based on the “seven-year itch” of Hollywood starring Marilyn Monroe made its blog debut on 25th February 2009 with the most famous song of the movie thhande thhande paani se nahaana chaahiye. After three years na aaj thha na kal thha was posted on the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s Birthdate. After almost a full year Sudhirji gave us this article on a song which can be called as a “movie inside a movie” song.

All the posts with these songs give us a fair idea of what a fun movie “Pati, Patni Aur Woh” was. Hence, I am not writing any gist of the movie. The idea to revisit this movie came as there are promos of a modern version of this movie being shown on Television these days. I found that there are five songs in the movie and three have been posted on the blog. On going through YouTube, I could find only four songs from the movie. (resolution: shall sit through the movie one of these days to see if it has the missing song). I remember that “o duniya ke rakhwale” was used in the movie, actually only one line of the mukhda, when Sanjeev Kumar wants to reset his alarm clock. That was in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor.

I am trying desperately to refrain from writing what a fine actor Harihar Jethalal Jariwala -popular as Sanjeev Kumar- was, or about his comic timing or about his smart looks and smile. I am also not going to list out the wonderful movies that he has acted in or how much I love seeing him in emotional scenes. We have a brilliant post by Sudhirji mujhko to qaatil ki itni pehchaan hai which will give us a picture of the kind of actor Haribhai (as his friends in the industry addressed him).

Today on the occasion of the 34th remembrance day of Haribhai we can have the last available song from “Pati Patni Aur Woh”. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mahendra Kapoor, written by Anand Bakshi and Ravindra Jain was the composer. This lively song is at the wedding of friends of the lead couple, who later go ahead and get married (in the movie 🙂 ). The song kind of follows the qawwali format. This was one of the movies where Sanjeev Kumar acted his age and was not an aged person meaning senior citizen.

Happy Friendship day to all in Atuldom

As I have said in my post last year, the first Sunday of August is celebrated in many parts of the world as Friendship day. All the proverbs or sayings connected with Friends and Friendship come rushing to the mind viz. “a friend in need is a friend indeed”; “a real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out”; “every gift from your friend is a wish for your happiness”; “a friends’ eye is like a good mirror”; etc.

At the same time I can recollect numerous songs from Bollywood connected with friendship and friends like “doston se pyaar kiya dushmanon se badle liya” (which subsequently Usha Uthup used to sing as “doston se pyaar kiya dushmano se bahut pyaar kiya” in all her concerts); “ae yaar sun yaari teri mujhe zindagi se bhi pyaari hai”; and the most popular of them all- “ye dosti hum nahin todenge”.

It is really fortunate to have friends on whom one can rely. It is an experience where in, one can just pick up the phone and begin talking as if there was no break in the one-to-one interaction, or any lapse of time in between one meeting or chat and another. And I must say I experienced it. So much so, that around the beginning of June a few friends of mine from my college days decided to meet up at the place of one amongst us and spend a few days together.

Much like the gangout that I had with my blog friends in April end. That gangout was decided at short notice, even the venue changed from Guruji’s place to Kamathji’s place as Guruji had to urgently rush out of Mumbai. It was a hangout that fell in place as Sudhirji intimated that he will be in Mumbai at that time with Bakshishji for company, for almost a week. And I didn’t want to miss the opportunity of meeting the two of them, and made it aware that I will have only a few hours at my disposal before catching my return bus to Bangalore. And the hangout happened with Bharatji, Sudhirji, Bakshishji and Nitinji.

We had a very gracious and efficient host in Kamathji and his family. I simply loved the attention they gave us. Nitinji and Bharatji had already arrived when I reached the venue and then the bell rang. We all expected it to be the Dilliwales but it turned to be our ever-smiling IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPAEDIA. That was the best surprise that could have been sprung on the gang as we were without information about his location. And the sweet/ cute person that he is, he decided to meet us as soon as he landed in Mumbai – just that morning. Then the Dilliwales walked in and we had quorum so to speak. We managed to spend a joyful time where Sudhirji and Bakshishji spoke of their time well-spent over the last two days doing what we all enjoy- listening to music.

So, when birds of the same feather flock together there is a whole lot of Music, Masti And Magic. (this last 3 Ms is the slogan of one of the many music channels on satellite television). Like it happened when I met my gang of college friends in the heart of summer and the country reeling under temperatures of 40-49 degrees Celsius. But that didn’t stop us from getting out into the sun and seeing a part of the country which we had never visited. And when it got too hot, we just whiled away the time in the comfort of the air-conditioned room, talking of old times and catching up on 30 years of gossip, with platefuls of snacks and mugs full of tea/ coffee. Yes, I had met a particular friend after that many years but we never felt that it was that long back. There was no awkwardness. That is what friends and friendship is about I suppose.

We have numerous Hindi film songs where gangs of girl friends pick up their cycles and go about singing like Saira Banu did in Padosan or Nutan did in Anaari and Chhaliya. Heroes are no different and we have seen Rajendra Kumar in Aas Ka Panchchi; Rishi Kapoor and Rakesh Roshan with their group of friends in Aap Ke Deewane etc. But our movie stars also sing along with their friends in open topped cars and jeeps and we end up having songs like “chaahe koi khush ho chaahe gaaliyan hazaar de”; “Manubhai motor chale pom pom pom”.

Now there is a similarity in the two open topped car songs that I have mentioned. Though the two songs are 24 years apart, and they show the heroes frolicking about they are singing in the same voice. That of Kishore Kumar.

Kishore Kumar who would have been 90 today. Unbelievable!!! But then we are not fortunate to have him amongst us. We are fortunate that we have his songs- songs that tickle us into laughter, bring a smile to our lips, nudge us out of bad moods. And we are grateful to lord almighty for this singer, actor, producer, director and music composer who lived amongst us mortals. Whose friendship with Dev Anand, RD Burman, Rajesh Khanna etc is well known. His voice was instrumental in shaping the careers of many actors till Anil Kapoor, Sunjay Dutt, Kumar Gaurav etc.

Today’s song is from the 1978 Surinder Kapoor produced, Sikandar Khanna directed “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan” which starred Rishi Kapoor and Moushumi Chatterjee in lead roles with Ashok Kumar, Amjad Khan, Asrani, Ranjeet, Helen, Paintal Mukri, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo etc. Mithun Chakravarthy played one of Rishi Kapoor’s many friends in the movie. The songs were written by Rajinder Krishan and Laxmikant- Pyarelal were the music composers.

I have seen this movie years ago but the story of the movie as given on IMDB.com is as follows (and is accurate I must say) —
Aware that his grandson has acquired all the bad habits of a rich and spoiled brat, including womanizing and alcohol, Lala Ganpat Rai, instructs his lawyers to make it conditional that he, Vishal, shall not receive any money or property from his estate unless he fulfills either of two conditions. One: That he marries a woman of Rai’s choice, Shalini, who shall inherit half of the property; and in order for Vishal to inherit all of the property he must re-locate to their farmhouse in a village, cultivate a piece of land, and grow some crops on it within one year. Needless to say, Vishal is enraged at this, and neither of the two conditions are acceptable to him. However, he reconsiders this, and he and half a dozen friends travel to the village, set a comfortable albeit accommodations, and attempt to cultivate the land. Things do not go as planned, as Vishal and his friends are accused of molesting and raping a village belle, which leads to her suicide. His friends, noticing the changed atmosphere, disappear, leaving Vishal alone to carry out the mammoth task of cultivating the land on his own, without help or support, and angry villagers who may expel him from their village. It looks like Vishal is on his way of losing everything he had ever hoped, prayed, and taken for granted.

From the above story it is evident that friends can make or break one’s life. There is a line in the other song that I have mentioned above

“chaahe koi khush ho chaahe gaaliyan hazaar de” which is how friendships should be

The heart must have missed a beat – on reading the title of this post. Goodness. . . this wonderful iconic song, 65 years ago – it captured the imagination and the hearts of a generation, nay, many a generation of young hearts in love. This unforgettable song is imprinted on the sands of memory, never to be erased by any winds that may blow, till the end of life.

The golden age of melody was at its peak. The manner in which Shailendra knit together the words and lines of this love song – cannot be and has not been bettered since. The melody and the orchestration conceived by Shanker Jaikishan – the arrangement of the instruments, the preludes, the interludes, the rhythm – everything just perfect in this song. The renditions – Manna Da and Lata – the voices working together seamlessly – rising and falling in unison, and in apposition, complementing, merging – the “aa haa haa” lines going up all the way to the clouds. The lines

receding into the depths of somber apprehensions, and then suddenly a rising declaration of a resolution,

chaand na chamkega kabhi

the rendition volume going up all the way to the moon. The resolve expressed with such a dignified confidence in the nature’s machinations. The moon – no it will never stop shining, and thus, by implication, this love will never be broken, this companionship will never part. And suddenly, instinctively, unknowingly there is a lump in the throat and a warm moisture on the corners of the eyelids. Yes, yes – that is what love is – the poet, the music-waala, the singers – yes, they have got it just right, on the dot. Yes that is what love is, what it ought to be. Such noble souls lived in that golden era – who could feel it right, and conjure up an imagination, combining the words, the music and the sound – and then tell it to us so simply – that no further discourse would be necessary.

I am reminded of another quintessential song from the same film –

ramaiya vasta vaiya
maine dil tujhko diya

And once again, the simplest of words, the simplest verse one can conjure up – and there is no better way, no better words invented, before or since, to say – I love you.

And the scene, the depiction – the conceptualization – a master presenter is at work here. Here is an emotional entanglement coming to fruition in the hearts of two young people, almost at the very bottom of the ladder of social significance. A part time employee at a laundry, who has “borrowed” a suit that has come for cleaning, and his shoes are in tatters. A self employed teacher, who gives basic education to the underprivileged children in the backyard of her own home. But then love does not check on social status, or verify your bank balances, before making a burrow into the hearts. That love is simple. That love is without embellishments. That love is honest and innocent. That simply is love, and it happens, just happens.

The overcast skies, the lashing rains, the amused witness – the chaiwaala (tea seller), the incidental umbrella, the handy tootle that the young man plays, the happenstance of three cheruby toddlers in raincoats – all put together in a scenario that simply cannot now be erased from the memory’s palette.

The emotional expressions of the leading pair are just as consummate and accomplished as the scenario itself. The sharing of the umbrella becomes such a pivotal exchange. The young man offers it to the lady. And she hands it back, seeing him getting drenched. He takes it, but then sees that she is in the same plight, so immediately offers it back to her. She once again takes it, and with a helplessness writ large on her face, sees him getting drenched once again. And then the inevitable happens. With her eyes clenched, and her lips trembling with apprehension, she inches closer to him – dawning of the realization that one must share when there is a need. And the two come close now, holding the same umbrella – realizing that in love, one has to share, one has to hold together, and one has to steady each other against the squall of the winds and outpourings of this ruthless world.

And then the song begins – question by the young man, not specifically directed at her, but at himself too. And the lady answers, for both of them together – “. . . Maaloom Nahin Hai Kahaan Manzil . . .”. One of the supreme examples of cinema at its very best, in telling about emotions that shake a heart when the love is just starting to take baby steps in there. Marvellous . . . simply marvelous – much more than the best of the words can express.

Um. . . kind of got carried away with the original. 🙂

25 years after the release of the original, this song was used once again in the 1979 film ‘Salaam Memsaab’. And the manner of use is so very innovative. A little earlier, back in 1970, when ‘Mera Naam Joke’ was released, at the beginning of part II we see Raj Kapoor at the Bombay Carnival, hosting a bioscope stand, singing “Kehta Ha Joker, Saara Zamaana. . .”. And as he sings, he is operating the bioscope in which we are treated to clips of his earlier films, especially ‘Awaara’ and ‘Shri 420’. It is fun to watch those clips in fast forward mode.

In ‘Salaam Memsaab’, a similar presentation is used. A little background. Radha (role played by Zarina Wahab) and Sunder (role played by Asrani) are two young people, friends and in love. They are the street tamaasha people who sing and dance on the roadside to earn their living. Sunder has high aspirations, and wants to become rich quickly. Radha also has aspirations, but she is averse to making compromises with her principles of honesty and truthfulness. They work together, but this difference in their view of life generates arguments.

Near the beginning of the film, just about half hour into it, Radha chances to see a bioscope man, playing his machine near the Gateway of India. She gets in line and starts watching – she gets in when the song “Pyaar Hua Iqraar Hua Hai. . .” is starting to play. We can see her enjoying the show, and then as the lead pair comes on at the beginning of the song, she gets into a different dreamy dimension of fantasy, and instead of seeing Raj Kapoor and Nargis on the screen, she sees herself and Sunder there, performing the same song, singing and expressing their newly discovered love for each other. She is fascinated, and the entire song is replayed on the screen in front of her, performed now by the two new lovers.

This is a very innovative presentation. In the singing parts of the clip, we can see Radha and Sunder performing, and in the other parts of the clip, the director uses the original footage and scenes. The entire song moves back and forth between the now Radha and Sunder, and the earlier scenes. Very interestingly edited and put together. E.g. when the line “Phir Bhi Rahengi Nishaaniyan” is playing, the scene clips back to the original version and we see the three toddlers with raincoats, toddling through the rain. Readers may recall that in the original version, the three kids are the children of Raj Kapoor – Ritu, Randhir and Rishi. The clip cuts back and forth between the current version, shown in subdued colors and shades, and the original version shown in black and white. Very intelligently designed.

In her dream of wide open eyes, Radha sees herself and Sunder, in an exact image of the hero and heroine on screen. As one watches their movements and expressions, the effort has been made to create an exact replica not just of the scenario, but also of the performance and expressions. You can open up two windows in the video playing software, and play the two songs, this one and the original, side by side. One is amazed by the effort made by Zarina and Asrani to replicate the performance as nearly as possible. Ah, we know it is not Raj Kapoor and it is not Nargis. But still it is a very impressive performance to see.

The film ‘Salaam Memsaab’ is produced under the banner of Roshan Films, Bombay and is directed by Asrani himself. The cast of actors includes Asrani, Zarina Wahab, Ranjeet, Manju Bansal, Rahman, Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Jugnu, Leela Mishra, Sulochana (Senior), Tom Alter, CS Dubey, Arvind Rathore, Anand Girdhar, Amol Sen, Dilip Tahil, Nilu Arora, Master Jeetu, Yusuf, and Raju, with friendly appearances by Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Yogita Bali, and Rishi Kapoor. The songs of this film are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music is by RD Burman. Seven songs are listed for this film which have been rendered by Mohamed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

This song, being a reuse, is not listed in Geet Kosh. And as I mentioned in an earlier episode of this series, it is not easy to track down such re-use songs, unless one has actually seen the film(s). I had also written that since I started this series, I have been getting inputs from many friends, from our bandwagon and also from others in our music lovers group, about such reuse songs. Since these songs are generally not listed, such inputs from friends has really added many interesting reuse scenarios that I was not aware of.

Today’s song was sent in as a suggestion from Anekant ji. He is a regular contributor in our comments section, and I am sure all are familiar with him. Not being aware of this reuse song, I am delighted to get this input from him. A real wonderful song, and a real wonderful reuse after twenty five years – from 1954 to 1979 to 2019 – and forty more, when we are now reading about it once again. 🙂

A reuse that takes you into a fantasy land of a dream of wide awake eyes. I am sure all of us have had some similar experience some time or another in our lives. Apologies for the digression, but I just remembered another such on screen ‘dream of wide awake eyes’ which I just cannot resist mentioning. 🙂 For all those who have seen and remember ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1972). Yes, I am referring to the song “Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan”. Amol Palekar is watching the film in a theatre. Onscreen the song is being performed by Dharmendra and Hema Malini. And within a few seconds, Amol Palekar goes into this ‘dream of wide awake eyes’, and through his eyes, we see the song being performed on screen by himself and Vidya Sinha. The reverie is quiet painfully broken as the villain appears at the end of the song and hits the hero with a belt. (Just from that split second profile, my feeling has been that it was actor Manmohan, the villain I mean.)

Ah so, we have a new category of songs to mull over – ‘dream of wide awake eyes’. And I am sure the readers will recall many such songs in Hindi films – yes, we do that a lot. 🙂
