It was on this date (19 july) that the first article was posted on 19 july 2008 eight years ago and the blog thus got launched. We have been celebrating this day every year in the blog as the blog anniversary day ever since.
The blog began on 19 july 2008 but wordpress, the host of the blog sends me greetings every year on 11 july. It means that I had signed up on wordpress on 11 july and it took me another eight days before I was post my inaugural writeup.
Why exactly did this date get chosen ? Just a chance or was there some planning behind it ? There was no conscious planning on my part of course, but could there be something divine and pre ordained about this date ? I never thought along these lines till now but I just realised that 19 july 2008 may have been the perfect date for launching a blog dealing with Hindi movie songs.
Here is a quick quiz for Hindi movie music lovers. Which is the most popular month of the year for music makers ? A little thought would show that Hindi music lyricists deal in Hindi calender rather than the gregorian calender while penning their songs. Indian calender has months like “Chaitra (Chait), baishaakh, jyeshtha (Jeth), Ashadh, shrawan (Saawan), bhadrapad (Bhaadon)…. “etc rather than gregorian calendar months of january, february, march…”etc. That being the case, we can easily tell that the month of “Saawan” is the most popular month for Hindi lyricists.
And guess what ! 19 july 2008 was the date on which the month of Saawan began that year ! So the stars in the sky may have preordained that a blog dealing in Hindi movie songs needed to start on the first day of the month of “Saawan” which happens to be the most popular month for Hindi movie makers as well as the Hindi movie music makers.
So, this blog began on the first day of the month of Saawan in the Vikram Samwat 2065 (or Saka Samvat 1930).
Western people have one valentine’s day, whereas Hindi calendar has one full month. “Saawan” is Indian calendar’s month of valentine. Even the next month of Bhaadon can be said to be an extension of Saawan for the purpose of lovestrucks.
There are lots and lots of songs in HFM that contain the word “Saawan” in them. When I look at the list of songs in the blog, I find that as many as 61 “saawan” songs have already been covered so far with many more such songs yet to be covered.
On the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the blog that we celebrate today, here is an appropriate song for the occasion. It is a song that talks about the “Saawan ka maheena” and describes its effects on people who are lovestruck.
This song has two versions. Kishore Kumar solo version is lip synced by Rajesh Khanna, with Tina Munim looking on from a distance. TheKishore Kumar-Lata duet version gets plays in the climax of the movie towards the end.
Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
This song is not just another song for the blog. This song is the 100th Kishore Kumar song in the blog that is lip synced by Rajesh Khanna ! Trust our fertile brain to come up with statistics like this ! 🙂
