Although he lacked the finesse and comeliness of Shammi Kapoor, yet Jeetendra did acquire the epithet of ‘Jumping Jack’ of Hindi cinema. The film was ‘Farz’ from 1967. White shoes till then, were typically a trademark of either Rajkumar, or of the villain bosses like NK Ansari etc. In ‘Farz’, Jeetendra donned these white shoes for the song “Mast Bahaaron Ka Main Aashiq”. The image captured the imagination and clicked with the audiences. And then of course, followed a string of films with songs by Jeetendra presented with the same vigor and similar mannerisms. The ‘Jumping Jack’ epithet quite stuck on now.
Jeetendra appeared in quite an impressive and accumulated list of films just during the four year period from 1967 to 1971 – ‘Parivaar’, ‘Suhaag Raat’, ‘Aulaad’, ‘Mere Huzoor’, ‘Dharti Kahe Pukaar Ke’, ‘Do Bhai’, ‘Jeene Ki Raah’, ‘Jigri Dost’, ‘Anmol Moti’, ‘Vishwas’, ‘Waris’, ‘Khilona’, ‘Himmat’, ‘Humjoli’, ‘Jawaab’, ‘Mere Humsafar’, ‘Carvaan’, ‘Naya Raasta’, ‘Banphool’, ‘Kathputli’, ‘Ek Naari Ek Brahmchari’ et al. Majority of the songs of Jeetendra from these films carry the playback voice of Rafi Sb. The voice, the persona, the actor and the mannerisms quite well blended into one another, and Rafi Sb became the voice of yet one more new entrant into the Hindi cinema.
Continuing the alpha series of Rafi Sb’s songs, here is a vivacious and naughty presentation from the 1972 film ‘Shaadi Ke Baad’. The film comes from Prasad Productions in Madras and is directed by LV Prasad. The story of this film revolves around the subject of dowry, how a marriage is devastated after the wedding has occurred, because of the greed of the boy’s father, and how some people, including the groom in the story, get together to set right the situation and the mind of the greedy father-in-law.
The lyrics of this playful song are penned by Anand Bakshi and the music is composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. On screen, the song is performed by Jeetendra, as he is trying to tease and trouble Raakhee, who is play acting as a nurse taking care of him, who has apparently lost his mental balance. The deception is all for the benefit of the unaware father of the groom. And so the story moves.
The voice sounds so young and fresh, even today, as it did, gosh, forty four years ago. What more to say. It is the magic – the magic of Rafi Sb’s voice.
