BARSAAT KI EK RAAT (1948) was produced under the banner of Deewan Pictures, Bombay and it was directed by G Singh. The star cast included Amarnath, Pran, Asha Posley, Durga Mota, Shamlal, G N Butt, Baby Lata etc. I have no idea about the story of the film. Going by the refrains of the songs of the film, the story seems to be revolved around the romantic pairs with moods of exuberance and separation.

The film had 12 songs written by D N Madhok, Mulkraj Bhakri and Shaukat Thanvi. However, distribution of songs among the lyricist is not available. Names of the singers of all the songs have not been stated. All the songs were set to music by Ghulam Haider. One song has been covered in the Blog.

I am presenting the 2nd song ‘duniya-e-aarzoo ko mita kar chale gaye’ from the film to appear on the Blog. It is a rare song in the sense that the song was not available on YT until I made a video from mp3 clip and uploaded the same on YT. In mp3 clip, the song has been accredited to Munawwar Sultana (not to be confused with Munawwar Sultana, the actress). To me also, the voice in the song resembles that of Munawwar Sultana (singer) on the basis of her other songs which I had heard earlier.

Like Dilshad Begum, Munawwar Sultana (08/11/1924 – 20/05/1995) was a radio singer in Punjabi and Urdu songs on All India Radio, Lahore in the 40s. I find that almost all of the films of pre-independence period in which she gave playback were produced in Lahore. Also, all of her songs were composed by music directors who had Lahore connections.

It is said that Munawwar Sultana received musical training from Ghulam Haider in the 1930s when he was composing non-filmy songs for Jien-o-Phone record company. However, music director Pandit Amarnath gave her chance to sing in her first two Hindi/Urdu films – ‘Albeli’ (1945) and ‘Dhamki’ (1945). It was not until the film ‘Mehendi’ (1947) when she got an opportunity to sing for her mentor, Ghulam Haider. Thereafter she sang for Ghulam Haider in the films ‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat’ (1948) and ‘Aabshar’ (1953). During her pre-independent filmy career, she sang about 20 songs.

Post-independence, Munawwar Sultana continued to sing for Pakistani films. One of her songs of this period which I like the most is o pardesia bhool na jaana from the Pakistani film ‘Beqaraar’ (1950) which she sang under the music direction of Ghulam Haider. Munawwar Sultana married Ayub Noomani, the then Station Director of Radio Pakistan, Lahore, in the 50s. By the end of 1950s, she had virtually retired from the film industry.

Song-Duniya e aarzoo ko mita kar chale gaye (Barsaat Ki Ek Raat)(1948) Singer-Munawwar Sultana, MD-Ghulam Haider

Lyrics

duniya–e-aarzoo ko mita kar chale gaye ae
duniya–e-aarzoo ko mita kar chale gaye ae
ummeed kaa aasraa wo bujhaa kar chale gaye ae

dar thhaa ke me…re ashq naa
daaman ko thhaam le ae ae ae ae ae ae
dar thhaa ke me…re ashq naa
daaman ko thhaam le ae ae ae ae
daaman ko aansuon se bachaa kar chale gaye ae
daaman ko aansuon se bachaa kar chale gaye

duniya mein mere waaste kuchh bhi nahin raha
duniya mein mere waaste kuchh bhi nahin raha
pehloo mein apna dard basaa kar chale gaye
pehloo mein apna dard basaa kar chale gaye ae

jeena pada..aa aa aa hai aaj
jiye jaa rahen hain ham
haa aa aa aa haay
tum zindagi ko maut bana kar chale gaye ae
duniya–e-aarzoo ko mita kar chale gaye ae
ummeed kaa aasraa wo bujhaa kar chale gaye ae ae ae ae
