“Najma”(1943) was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan for Mehboob Productions,Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar and Veena in lead roles supported by Sitara, Kumar, Yaakoob, Majid, Rajkumari Shukla, Murad, Laddan etc.
Story of this movie, as given by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, is as following :
Lucknow medical student Yusuf (Ashok Kumar) has fallen in love with Najma ( Veena), the daughter of his wealthy neighbour, after seeing her only once. Encouraged by his friend Bedil ( Yaqub), he decides to pursue her. Najma thinks he is too forward and tries to punish him by putting salt in his food at her family’s Eid celebration, but accidentally serves it to his father Dr. Khan (Murad) instead. Najma then falls in love with Yusuf, meeting him secretly in the garden. Their romance is interrupted when Dr. Khan announces that he has betrothed his son to his cousin Raziya ( Sitara Devi). Although Yusuf initially refuses to marry Raziya because she is an uneducated village girl and he loves Najma, Najma convinces him to marry Raziya to preserve his family’s honour.
Heartbroken, they both marry other people; Yusuf marries Raziya and Najma weds the wealthy Mukarram Nawab ( M.Kumar). Raziya finds out about Yusuf’s hidden love and becomes very jealous. Meanwhile, Yusuf sinks into depression and Najma becomes ill with worry over him. Mukarram overhears Raziya jealously berating Najma over her love for Yusuf and resolves to kill him. But Mukarram has a serious accident and Yusuf is the only one who can save his life. Yusuf saves Mukarram’s life and assures him and Raziya that he does not wish to take Najma away. Giving up each other forever, Yusuf and Najma part.
The movie had twelve songs in it. Eleven songs from the movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is the twelfth and final song from “Najma”(1943) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Mumtaz and Parul Ghosh. Anjum PilibhitiAarzoo Lucknowi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rafiq Ghaznavi.
The song is picturised on Veena and Rajkumari Shukla, I guess, but my guess may be wrong. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors in the picturisation.
For that matter, I have not been able to tell the two singers apart. Normally I can identify Parul Ghosh’s voice, but here I am unable to do so.
With this song, “Najma”(1943) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
PS-Mr Harish Raghuwanshi, HFM historian and our regular, has informed me that this song was penned by Aarzoo Lucknowi, and not Anjum Pilibhiti. So I have made the correction now.
