Welcome to the 97th birthday party of Gubbaare Waale Baba. He was a master of carrying any disguise, get-up or make up. Can one forget the red-wigged Sher Khan? Or Malang chacha. Or Raka. or Gajendra Singh or Halaaku. He had his own style of blowing smoke rings which first appeared in Bari-Behan (1949). He was sinister to the extent that people would not name their new borns – Pran. His name always appeared in the movie credits as “And Pran”.
I am always worried that there will come a time when we run out of songs featuring this adorable, dildaar (generous) etc. etc.- we can add any number of adjectives to describe this artist who began his career in the Lahore film industry before partition as hero to Noor Jehan. On coming to Mumbai his assignments till the sixties had him play a Bad-Man to Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Ajit etc. His villain act didn’t spare the next generation heroes too- Shammi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajeet, Dharamendra, Manoj Kumar and many more known and unknown heroes. He was given a change of image by Manoj Kumar in 1967 Upkaar as Malang Chacha. Then followed movies like Nanha Farishta, Jungle Mein Mangal, Dharma, Ek Kunwari Ek Kunwara where he was the central character and Navin Nischol, Kiran Kumar, Rakesh Roshan etc played second fiddle. His act as Malang chacha, Shambu Mahadeo Rao (Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool) & Ram Singh (Be-imaan) got him the Filmfare Best Supporting actor award. He was also awarded the villain of the Millennium by Stardust in 2000. I know I have said this before but I don’t mind repeating that in 2010 he featured in the list of 25 Top Asian Actors and won the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2013. He took a stand against Shankar-Jaikishan winning the best music director award in 1973 for Be-Imaan as he felt that Ghulam Mohammed for Pakeezah deserved it more and did not accept his own supporting actor award. What a strong persona!
Before going any further I would like to take this opportunity to wish a very lively friend and a regular contributor to the blog A Very Happy Birthday and another regular of this blog (I am yet to meet this person in person) and his wife A Very Happy Anniversary. I am stopping short of naming them (difficult task though).
Getting back to the song it is the work of Anand Bakshi and music director duo Laxmikant Pyarelal in the 1980 Subhash Ghai directed “Karz”. Here we have Pran disguised as a tantric and Aruna Irani (in a guest appearance) as a tribal girl who believes that the tantric can cure her of all her illnesses- love. Pran sings in the voice of Manna Dey and Anuradha Paudwal is the voice for Aruna Irani. Kishore Kumar for Rishi Kapoor joins the party mid-way. The sole intention of the song is to make a fool of Simi Garewal into believing that she is in love with Rishi. The others present in the song and dance are Viju Khote and Bhramachari.

arey toone apne aap hi

kamaal hai kamaal hai
kamaal hai dhamaal hai
kamaal hai kamaal hai
kamaal hai dhamaal hai
kamaal hai dhamaal hai
kamaal hai dhamaal hai
kamaal hai dhamaal hai
kamaal hai dhamaal hai
