Today we will have a song from the 1957 L.V. Prasad directed Meena Kumari- Raj Kapoor- Shyama starrer ‘Sharada’ – written as ‘Shaarda’ by Atulji in the ‘List-of songs-moviewise’. It is mentioned as ‘Sharada’ in the filmography of Meena Kumari (a rule in English grammar says that proper nouns can be written with any spelling, specially there is no right or wrong spellings as far as Indian words are concerned).
The movie had ten songs with “Raghupati Raaghav Raaja Ram” being a multi-part or multi-version song. Atulji posted the first song from this movie in 2009 – “Lehraaye Jiya Balkhaaye Jiya” a song sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Shyama. And Atul ji opened that post with these lines.
I thought that I had posted songs from “Sharada” in the past. It turns out that I was confusing “Sharada” with “Sadhana”. Yes, those days we had movies with names like “Sharada”, “Sadhana”, “Kalpana” etc which were also the names of some well-known actresses. Incidentally, the actress with the same name was nowhere to be found in these movies.
The next song to posted on the blog was “Chaahe Zindagi Se Kitna Bhi Bhaag Re“. This was a philosophical song and in his write up with the song Atul ji has mentioned that he was surprised about the company that Raj Kapoor had in this movie namely Meena Kumari heroine, Rajinder Krishan as lyricist and C Ramachandra for music. There have been two more songs since then “Jap Jap Jap Jap Jap Re” and “Raghupati Raaghav Raaja Ram” . This means that it is exactly two years since the last song from the movie was posted.
It is a known fact that Ramchandra Chitalkar mostly used Lata Mangeshkar for his requirements of female voice. But recently I gained knowledge that he has used other singers too. Last month there was this meet of RMIM in Bangalore and at the invitation of our Gajendra Khanna ji I attended it primarily because the focus was to be on C Ramachandra on his birth centenary year. This was a meet of like-minded music aficionados from all parts of India. I felt like a trivial creature in the midst of people who boasted of knowledge about Chitalkar. The feeling of triviality was further compounded when I heard about how people were passionate about their collections of vinyl records, pamphlets of movies, articles about films etc. (A detailed report on the meet is awaited from the master of ceremonies of that event – Gajendra Khanna ji). It was there, at the meet, that I learnt that he has used other female singers too.
Today’s song has Chaandbala, Shamshad Begum and Asha Bhonsle as singers. The song is a stage song. It has Anita Guha playing a dominating wife to a timid husband. There is Agha peeping from behind the sidelines. I would love to know who is the artist – the one lip syncing the lines about the “Lala being a Joru Ka Ghulam”- for whom Asha Bhonsle has given her voice. I would love to know who is playing the timid husband.
I am sure all the regular followers of the blog would have guessed where I am headed. Why I have chosen this particular song and music director. This is my humble gift to the Mahaan fan of C. Ramchandra in our midst.
On the occasion of our Guruji’s birthday let us wish him lots of fun and joy, music and entertainment. I thank the Almighty that he is with us for guiding us through this musical journey of ours, and pray that this journey together continues on and on and . . .

Ah, good song from the C. Ramchandra collection for Arunji’s birthday. The end should have been different though – I didn’t like the wife being subservient to the husband. 🙂

but it was a fun song i thought, and the thought keep appearing even in modern times— that wives are dominant until the husbands take to sharaab.

Singer Chandbala came from Kolhapur. She started singing in Madhosh-51 and sang 13 songs in 12 films like Badi Bahu,Anjaan,Mahatma kabir,Dhobi Doctor,Fighting Queen,Sharda,Pak Daman,Nausherwane Adil,Phir subah Hogi, Mehendi and Night Bird-61.
She had also acted in films Anand Bhavan,,Hero No 1 and Shama.

Sheila Vaz at 0:23(in one disguise->with specs and pagdi on head)and again it is Sheila vaz(in another disguise with specs and different type of hat on head and a stick at hand) and Meena Fernandes(of Sujata fame “Tum jeeyo hazaaro saal”) the dancer (another lady in disguise at 1:25 who also got a hat on head and a stick in the hand)
Totally 3 performers on stage Anita guha, Meena Fernandes(with two type of dresses) and Sheila Vaz(in two roles and 2 type of dresses)
Am I Right ???
