Mukesh and his Composers – 26

There are many songs of Mukesh which I avoid listening too often. For every time I listen to them, I like to savour the magic in his voice afresh. Some of such songs are “Aansoo Bhari Hain Ye Jeevan Ki Raahen“, “Jaane Kahaan Gaye Wo Din“, “Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye“, “Ye Mera Deewaanapan Hai” and a host of many other songs. I know that the sample of above quoted songs are quite familiar and well-known, but then there are dozens of songs in the 40’s and 50’s which have additional flavor and uniqueness in them. It is extremely difficult to describe in words what effect the mind and soul experience on listening to such songs. Mukesh did sing them for situations in the film. What remains today of these movies is mainly the vocal impulses of his melodious voice.

Thus, when Avinash ji sent me lyrics and details of yet another Mukesh song, my mind raced to another such song because of the name of Sikkim state in the title. The song I recalled is from the film ‘Road To Sikkim’ (1969). I have already listened to it four times as I write this post. Just grab your headphones and enjoy the trance that this song generates – “Tum Jahaan Ho Wahaan Kya Ye Mausam Nahin“. This is the only Mukesh song from the film and needless to say, it has already been covered on the blog. In fact, it is the only song from the movie to be covered so far. It again gives us an indication of the popularity of the songs sung by Mukesh. Many films of yesteryear are now known only because of the songs he has sung in them.

In today’s post we are discussing another film called ‘Romeo In Sikkim’ released 6 years later  in 1975. I reproduce below, the details provided by Avinash ji who has also provided the lyrics for this song.

====================================
Film Details provided by Avinash ji

‘Romeo In Sikkim’ (1975) was directed by Hari Kishan Kaul for Radhika Films, Bombay. It had Shyam Pradhan, Ameena Kareem, Kundan, Rajan Haksar, Shyam Kumar, Dev Kishan, Raj Kamal, Om Prakash, Nazima, Polson and others. KN Singh, Junior Mehmood, Appi Umrani, Seema Kapoor and Hari Kishan Kaul had guest appearances in this movie.

Geet Kosh mentions four songs for this movie while also indicating the possibility of more songs for this movie. Mahendra Mishra, Shaily Shailendra and Sanam Gorakhpuri are the lyricist and Vishwanath is music composer. wsSuman Kalyanpur, Mukesh, Rafi and Usha Mangeshkar had given the playback.
====================================

In my quest to find more info of the film on the net, I came across this blog sikhim.blogspot which provides very good information about some aspects on making of the film. Here is the link for the particular article – Romeo in Sikkim ; Sikkim’s first Hindi film (1975). I reproduce below the lines that the author states in the above post regarding Mukesh.

After 37 years of the first release of Romeo in Sikkim, the only thing that remains popular is that immortal song, “Jiska Sapana”.

It is this immortal song that I have taken up for today’s post. It’s a fast-tracked romantic song; not exactly Mukesh’s forte but it he pulls it quite well. Shaily Shailendra is the lyricist for this particular songand Vishwanath is the composer for the song. As per Mukesh Geet Kosh (2nd edition) it’s the only song that Mukesh has sung for composer Vishwanth.

I made a few queries on RMIM regarding the composer and also Sudhir ji sent me a couple of links to explore more on the composer. From the feedback on RMIM group and also my own efforts it appears this was the only film that he scored music for. There is another movie called Hanuman Vijay 1974 with Ajay Vishwanth as the composer. He seems to be a different person.

And then, there is detailed wiki page on the duo of Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy. This music director duo mainly worked for South Indian films. They composed music for one Hindi film – ‘Naya Aadmi’ (1956) which is already covered on the blog. This film apparently had 3 songs composed by Madan Mohan too. This duo had a break-up in 1965-1966 after which they also worked independently where in Viswanathan used his name as MS Vishwanathan.

Well, quite a digression. The obvious reason being same name confusions. I request knowledgeable readers to correct me if any of my content regarding the various composers is incorrect.

So, finally onto to this song by Mukesh. This is not an unheard song, but surely it is one of his lesser heard songs. And as is the case with all his lesser heard songs, this one too is a gem.

[Editor Note: Mukesh was born on 22nd July, 1923. We are less than one month away from the birth centenary of this peerless singer, to be celebrated on this coming 22nd July. This post is the first one in a short series leading up to this celebration, In this series, we will be publishing some of his rarest of rare songs. So please stay tuned.]

Song – Tum Hi To Ho Jiska Sapna Maine Dekha Tha  (Romeo In Sikkim)  (1975) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Shailey Shailendra, MD – Vishwanath

Lyrics (Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

tum hi to ho o
jiskaa sapnaa aa
maine dekhaa tha

tum hi to ho
jiska sapna
tum hi to ho
jiskaa sapnaa
maine dekha tha
jaane kab se
tum ko apna
maine samjha tha
tum hi to ho

sabhi kuchh mila tha lekin phir bhi
kuchh to kami thee meri khushi mein
dekha jo tumko dil ne ye jaana
tum hi nahin thee meri zindagi mein
tum hi nahin thee meri zindagi mein
tum hi nahin thee meri zindagi mein
tum hi to ho o
jiska sapna
maine dekha tha
tum hi to ho

ab to baahon mein aa jaao
chhod bhi do tum ye sharmaana
seekh liyaa hai kab se tum ne
khud bhi tadapna aur tadpaana
khud bhi tadapna aur tadpaana
khud bhi tadapna aur tadpaana
tum hi to ho
jiska sapna
maine dekha tha
jaane kab se
tum ko apna
maine samjha tha
tum hi to ho

Nice post Mahesh ji. I do listened to the song from ‘Road to Sikkim-1969’ and like it very much. I do not remember to have listened to this song earlier.
I have also noted the ‘editor’s remarks’ about Mukesh Centenary Celebrations. (so I am also thinking to send a write-up with a Mukesh song if I find one from the seventies to write about 🙂 )
Regards,

Avinash ji,

Many Thanks for your comment and for providing details and lyrics of the film.

Yes, many unposted songs of Mukesh are up for grabs. Songs that do not have hyperlinks in the tables of my two series are also a good indication of songs yet to be represented. However, these need to be verified again on the blog in case they have been covered of late.
