Tribute to Mohammad Rafi on 43rd death anniversary
We come to that day again, when the death anniversary of Rafi Sahab becomes the subject of talk, discussion, posts in the blog, awe-inspiring for learners and a deep-thinking day for die-hard fans like me. As I grow older, the word ‘fan’ in this context sounds basic and amateur. Not that it is anything great for me to be a ‘fan’ per se, because I am but a speck on this mortal earth, whereas Rafi Sahab’s voice and songs have attained immortality.
We are 6 months away from the beginning of centenary year of Rafi Sahab. There was only one Mohammed Rafi, he had no sibling, nobody could follow closely in his shadow, to constantly compete with. No one to keep him on his toes, always threatening to overtake. No one could make him feel insecure, for he was a pious Khuda ka banda who had faith as a guiding light. In his career of 35 years, he was able to take snubs or insults in his stride, with a smile, as he did the adulation and respect showered on him. For the faith tells him that all izzat and zillat is from Almighty Allah. No one else has any ability to give anything to anybody, but Him.
In this materialistic era, it is very difficult to keep this sort of faith and belief, which gives total peace to the soul. Rafi Sahab had that peaceful demeanor, which he always wore in his smile.
I remember a quote from a friend. She said that Rafi Sahab has the aura or presence that emanates peace. She said this when we were talking about him one day years ago. It is only now I am trying to understand what she meant by that. Rafi Sahab was not a threat to anybody, nor could he feel threatened by anybody. He expected nothing as his due from people and he was forever grateful for whatever barakah he received. And he pointed to the sky and said – “sab uparwale ki den hai”. These 5 words uttered in so low a voice that it will not register, if the listener was not concentrating, intent on absorbing every word.
Lata Mangeshkar has said in interviews about him that – “bahut shaleen svabhaav ke the, un ko gussa kabhi nahi aata thha”. There are many artists and others who worked with him and knew him, have said similar things.
Now let’s move to some research and analysis on the phenomena called Rafi Sahab.
A few days ago, this post appeared in the blog “Tore Kurte Se Tohra Tan Jhalke“. Mahesh ji has raised some questions in the post vis-à-vis Mukesh-Naushad, Rafi-Naushad and Mukesh-Lata-Naushad. While reading the post, my first thought was, hey. . . Naushad had Mukesh sing for Rajendra Kumar in ‘Saathi’. Then came the next thought – maybe it was almost two decades later after Andaaz. The table giving the list of songs confirmed it.

As can be seen above, Naushad’s score is 593 songs in 64 movies in a career spanning more than 60 years. It averages to more than 9 songs per movie. Even at the top of his career, he was doing 2-3 films per year in 50’s which trickled down to 1-2 in 60’s. In the 40’s too he was less prolific. 19, 10 and 9 songs of GM Durrani, Shyam Kumar and Surendra respectively, were almost all in the 40’s. GM Durrani had one song in ‘Deedar’. By this time not just Mukesh, but all the others were out of the picture for Naushad, including the great Saigal. Similarly, Naushad had pretty much replaced everyone else (including Shamshad Begum) with Lata Mangeshkar by early 50’s. What could be the reason for Rafi ending up with only 159 songs for Naushad, despite being his only choice as male singer, throughout 50’s and 60’s? The explanation for this is that the era of 40’s and 50’s the films had more female songs than male ones. Then who is most prolific singer for Naushad? The answer is Lata Mangeshkar with highest number of songs with 200-250 songs, or more at a guess.
Then Mahesh ji answered his own question in the comments with this statement 🙂 – “I think Naushad would have avoided Mukesh in any case as in Rafi he found an irreplaceable singer apt for his compositions and the discipline and manners that he expected.”
And Naushad is not in isolation, as far as his preference for Rafi Sahab is concerned, as his sole male singer. There are scores of composers including Madan Mohan, Ravi, Chitragupt, C Ramchandra, Roshan, Hansraj Behl, Husnlal Bhagatram, OPN, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman and RD Burman, among others. All of them ended up with movies which had only Rafi as the male playback singer. People say SDB was partial to Kishore Kumar, but I say he was partial to Rafi, and in many movies, he had Rafi sing for Dev Anand. Dev Anand’s friendship with Kishore Kumar is well known, but SDB was getting full scores by Rafi on Dev Anand, even when Kishore Kumar was giving playback only to Dev Anand. The celebrated ‘Guide’ is only one part of it.
The superstar Rajesh Khanna was never known to be partial to Kishore Kumar at least he did not put pressure on Laxmikant Pyarelal to have only Kishore Kumar as his playback singer. He was the superstar, he could have dictated anything, but he did not. In this way Rajesh Khanna favoured Rafi Sahab, when the maestro’s career was at a low point.
Another point raised by Mahesh ji is about the duets that were not composed by Naushad with Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Only such duet is in ‘Sunehra Sansaar’ 1975. But Naushad was not known for composing many duets, though I see 4 duets with Shamshad in ‘Mela’ (1948). But otherwise, Naushad composed few duets of even Rafi-Lata. One can try to put Mukesh’s voice in any of the Rafi solos and duets composed by Naushad, with the help of AI and see the results. Purely as a matter of interest and study, not to make any point here.
Through 1950’s Naushad’s compositions were based on Hindustani classical, for which Rafi’s classical training was a plus point. Or rather, because he had Rafi Sahab to deliver them, Naushad could compose such classics.
As I said above, there were music directors, who stuck to Rafi, there being other talented and specialist genre singers available, because in him and with him they found freedom to create songs, without fear or worry of whether the song would turn out well, or the singer will be able to perform the song as imagined. Their creativity demanded that they make the most of Rafi Sahab’s versatile gifted abilities. Then there were those, whose egos got the better of them and they denied this fact and avoided Rafi Sahab, only to go into exile or to be sidelined by their close ones in the film music circles. These very same people came full circle decades later to get Rafi sahab to sing for them. There was Khaiyyam, whose debut movie had superlative Rafi solos, who could not /or would not continue with him. It was Rafi Sahab who requested Khaiyyam to record those non-film songs.
There are a few talented persons even today, who are singing his songs all over the world and making vlogs about those songs, and they refrain from taking Rafi Sahab’s name, when discussing and explaining those songs and their murkiyan and they teach technique to make it easy for the new learners to grasp the nuances. So be it, who are we to begrudge them their choices and their ways of earning a livelihood.
For this anniversary post, I am presenting a simple rendition of Anand Bakshi’s poetry, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the film ‘Mera Dost’ (1969). The lyrics are meaningful, and they remind me of my own poem/ghazal which I wrote last year. I gave it the title “Ibrat” which means “a lesson well learned and remembered” in my own dictionary. It is one of those words whose meaning Google cannot fully understand.

This is just amateurish poetry and I feel too embarrassed to show them to a Ustad. It is my creativity and its 100% amateur, but original. The millennials are taking to free style poetry like a storm. So, I am also joining their throngs 🙂 .
Back to Rafi Sahab and the song. A song made special by the mere rendering of it by Rafi Sahab. Note how every word is infused with meaning and how many variations the word ‘Ae’ is given, in stanza’s and in repetition of mukhda. No wonder, the musicians are still missing him, 43 years after he left this faani duniya. His brand of integrity and humility is rare and in short supply forever.

Thank you Sir, for posting this. There is something wrong with the ghazal in arabic script. It is appearing without spacing in between words. I have tried to give it spacing, but may be a different font would help. I will try it myself and email it to you, if I find a font compatible with wordpress.

I have seen the email. The font I use in all word documents is ‘Calibri(Body)’. Now I will resend the posts in other fonts and let us see, if the problem is solved.
As for the Arabic script, I have redone the spaces and posted it in the comment above. Kindly see if this is possible to replace in the song post.
