Hullo Atuldom
On 26th September 1923, in Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab (undivided India) a third son was born to the well-to-do advocate Pishori Lal Anand who was named Dharamdev. Dharamdev went on to become the heartthrob of Hindi film fans as DEV ANAND.
He followed his older brother Chetan Anand to Bombay (called Mumbai these days), did various jobs & also joined his brother’s Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). Seeing Ashok Kumar in ‘Achhut Kanya’ & ‘Kismet’ inspired him to become an actor. He is said to have gate-crashed into the office of Prabhat Films (don’t recall where I read this), and Dev saab has said in an interview that Babu Rao Pai of Prabhat Films felt that this ‘boy deserved a break after seeing his smile, beautiful eyes & tremendous confidence’. That smile (which showed a missing tooth), those eyes (which depicted a hundred emotions) & confidence stayed with Dev saab forever.
Personally speaking, I was introduced to this performer by my dad who was a huge Movie buff. He used to love seeing films first-day-first-show, as a college-goer, and if the film had Dilip-Dev-Raj in the cast then those movies would be seen a few more times. So, when we used to see old movies (meaning movies of the 1950s & ’60s) on doordarshan’s evening shows, he made sure I saw “Paying Guest”, “Munimji”, “Tere Ghar Ke Saamne” and all the other Dev Anand favourites of his. Additionally, we used to hear songs on Radio Ceylon’s morning broadcast which made me fall in love with ‘jeevan ke safar mein raahi’. ‘shivji bihaane chale’, ‘maana janaab ne pukaara nahi’, ‘haay haay yeh nigaahen’, ‘ek ghar banaunga tere ghar ke saamne’, ‘hai apna dil toh awaara’ and many more. (I listened to radio Ceylon this morning too, and went down memory lane).
Some more Dev Anand songs got added to my list of ‘loved songs’ as I grew older- ‘ruk jaana o jaana humse do baatein’, ‘pal bhar ke liye koi humein pyar karle’, ‘kuch bhi karlo ek din tumko meri hona hoga’, ‘choodi nahi mera dil hain’ etc. I must confess that I started appreciating ‘kiska rasta dekhein’, ‘main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya’, ‘kya se kya ho gaya’ and similar songs only over the last 10-20 years.
Dev Anand is credited with introducing many new faces to the film industry and if I am not wrong Kalpana Kartik (his wife) was also his discovery. He made a good pair with actress of later years too i.e. post 1970. Can one forget all the movies that he acted with Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz, Rakhee, Tina Munim etc. Still later, when he stopped acting as a romantic main lead he introduced Tabu, Richa Sharma, Attley Brar, Bunty Behl etc. to the film industry in “Hum Naujawaan” (1985) where he played father to the teenaged Tabu.
It would have been his 100th birthday today if he was still around. I have numerous songs to choose from for this occasion. I was thinking of the song from “Hum Naujawaan” for it shows Dev Anand as a doting father. RD Burman was the music director for this film which had songs written by Anjaan & Indeevar. Peenaz Masani, Anuradha Paudwal, Mohd Aziz, and Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhonsle were the singers used. In addition to Dev Anand, Tabu, Richa Sharma, Attlet Brar, Bunty Behl, the film had Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Anupam Kher, Zarina Wahab, Tabassum, Ramesh Deo, Bharat Kapoor, Pinchoo Kapoor etc in the cast.
Remembering the forever young-at-heart Dev Anand with this song which was written by Anjaan.

Lyrics
ho
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
tu jahaan main wahaan
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
tu jahaan main wahaan
tujhse sunder koi hai kahaan
o o o
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
tu jahaan main wahaan
tujhse sunder koi hai kahaan
aa aa aa aa
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
chehra jo dekhe sooraj
saham saham jaaye
chham chham jhhanke ghunghru
jab kadam uthhaaye
hanse khilkhilaake jaise shama jhilmilaaye
ho ho ho ho
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
tu jahaan main wahaan
tujhse sunder koi hai kahaan
ho ho ho ho
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
halke halke chhalke jaise phoolon se shabnam
dheeme dheeme gaaye jaise hawa koi sargam
rang aise badle jaise aate jaate mausam
o o o o
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
tu jahaan main wahaan
tujhse sunder koi hai kahaan
o o o o
you are my darling
tu hai meri jaan
lalalaa
laalaa
laa laa laa laa laa

Peeveesi’s Mom,
Thanks for the post passionately , lovingly written. Yes ,Dev Anand was one of my favorites from school days, starting with the song ‘Jeevan Ke safar me raahi…’
I did not know Tabu was first cast in his film. I have not remembered this film.
