Today’s song is from the film Alakh Niranjan-1940.

This was a bilingual film made in Hindi and Marathi (in Marathi the title was ‘ Gorakhnath ‘). This was made by Arun Pictures, a banner floated and owned by the film’s director Bhal G. Pendharkar. Bhal ji, like V.Shantaram, was trained by the Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter, who employed them in his pioneer film company ‘ The Maharashtra Film Company’, Kolhapur.

It is a matter not very well known that Bhal ji, Shantaram and Master Vinayak were all closely related.
Bhal ji Pendharkar (Bhalchandra Gopal Pendharkar) was the son of Dr. Gopal Pendharkar, the Royal Physician of Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur state and his partner Radhabai. (Dr. Gopal was already married to another lady). This couple gave birth to Bhalji and Baburao Pendharkar. Their mother Radhabai left Dr. Gopal Pendharkar and married Damodar Karnataki. They had two sons- Master Vinayak (father of Baby Nanda), famous actor, director, producer and a studio owner and his brother Vasudev- who became a Cameraman. Kamalabai, the younger sister of Radhabai married Rajaram Vankudre and they had 2 sons- V. Shantaram, famous actor, director, producer and a studio owner and his brother V. Awadhoot- equally famous Cinematographer.

The Lyricist of this film was Pt. Anand Kumar. He was born in Delhi on 4-9- 1907. He was a producer, director, writer and Lyricist. From childhood, he was not interested in studies in English medium. He was taught Urdu, Hindi and Sanskrit by his poor Brahmin Shastri father.

When he was 15 year old, he entered a business. He was always discontented. He wanted to become an actor, but family resisted. He tried fasting and even suicide. Then he stole some money and ran to Bombay. He could not get into any studio and after money finished, he returned to Delhi, only to take more money and run to Bombay again. Even after this failure, he went back to Delhi and started writing stories.

His first book ‘Mera Huq‘ became a hot seller and he started earning money. He was invited by film people and he went to Bombay nth time. He wrote stories, dialogues and Lyrics of scores of films and earned name and money. He produced the film ‘Zameen’-43, under his own banner Anand Brothers. He directed 5 films,including a Hit Marathi film, Gora Kumbhar-42. Some of his films as a Lyricist were Suvarn Mandir-34,Katle aam-35, Pratibha-37, Divorce-38, Saathi-38, Alakh Niranjan-40, Punarmilan-40, Charnon ki Dasi-41, Raja Rani-42 etc. As a writer some films were, Divorce-38, Honhaar-36, Saathi-38, Vasant sena-42, Rang mahal-48 etc etc.

This was a film of 1940, the last year of the first decade of the Talkie films. Most of the artistes who were a spillover to Talkie film from the Silent film era were disappearing from the films. Those who were Hero and Heroines in the initial Talkie films had now become character artistes and those who were character artistes in the beginning, had left films. The year 1940 was the end of the first decade of Talkie films. From 1931 to 1939 most of the film music was made and sung by people who were experts in Classical Music. Classical music has never been the area of common people. It was born in Temples and nurtured in the Darbars of Kings and Nawabs. When film music relied heavily on classical mode, it became an imposition on the masses. Luckily, from the last 2 years of the 30’s, film music started changing and the emphasis shifted to traditional and Folk tunes over the classical.

1940 saw the emergence of Naushad with his first film “Prem Nagar”, as an independent MD. He is the one who advocated the combination of classical with Folk music and this was accepted by other MDs. More people now turned to film songs. MDs like Naushad, Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Saraswati Devi, Gyan Dutt, Pankaj Mullick and their followers in the later part of the 40’s changed film music upside down.

National Studios emerged from the merger of Sagar Movietone and Mehboob gave his blockbuster milestone film ” Aurat”. Himanshu Rai died untimely and the reigns of Bombay Talkies came into the hands of Devika Rani. Ranjit brought more popular films from its factory. Though there were signs of slow death, New Theaters still continued with musical films. Prabhat brought its third successive Saint film ‘ Sant Gyaneshwar”. Wadias looked after their Stunt films with fearless Nadia and John Cavas.

In the south, SSVasan started his Gemini Studios. Master Vinayak and P K Atre started Navyug Films. In August 1940, there was a big fire in New Theatres leading to heavy losses. The use of Harmonium was banned on A.I.R. Due to War Times, Raw Film controls were given to the Film Advisory Board. It also gave rise to Black Marketing of Raw film, in addition to already existing Rationing, and a new class of rich investors emerged in the film industry shaking its established Studio Systems and Culture.

The year 1940 made only 86 Hindi films, less than 100 for the consecutive third year in a row. Let us take a look at some important films of 1940.

New Theatres film “Aandhi” had good music and songs.

Bombay Talkies continued with Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis with the film “Azaad”, but it was not as popular as “Jhoola”, “Kangan” and “Bandhan”.

A dubbed foreign film -“Azadi E Watan” was the only Hindi film for which Malika Pukhraj had sung 2 songs.

Ranjit’s “Achhut” tackled a social evil, with good songs composed by Gyan Dutt.

A Stunt film of Shankar Vazare “Aflatoon Aurat” had an English song in it.

Sagar’s last film ” Alibaba” by Mehboob was released. “Aurat” , a Landmark film by Mehboob for National Studios was the origin of its remake ” Mother India”57.

Film “Bharosa” by minerva was based on an Incest story.

Sirco’s offering “Geeta” had a crime story, with double roles of Chandramohan and Durga Khote.

Prakash Pictures film “Narsi Mehta” had Sant Tukaram fame Vishnupant Pagnis and some good bhajans.

Film “Usha Haran” saw the Debut of Sitara Devi.

Film “Zindagi” from New Theatres had very good songs by Saigal.

Story of “Alakh Niranjan” was taken from the “Nath Puran”. The Nath sampraday had spread all over India and was known by different names in each state. There is a list of Nine Nath Gurus, who are called Navnath. The first Nath Guru is Machhindra. The complete list is as follows….

The stories surrounding every Nath Guru, especially the earlier ones, are very exciting, thrilling and entertaining. One must read them from the original Nath Puraan or Nav Nath Pothi. I have read all of them. These stories are in no way less than any Arabian Night stories. Due to their entertainment value, several films in several languages have been made on the early Gurus like Machhindranath and Gorakhnath. Films on Machhindranath were made as ‘Maaya Machhindra’ in Hindi, in 1932, 1951, 1960 and 1975. Films on Gorakhnath as ‘Alakh Niranjan’, were made in 1940, 1950 and 1975. Films on Bharthari were made in 1932 and 1944. Films on other Naths were made as ‘Raja Gopichand’ in 1933, 1938 and 1950. Same way films on Naths in Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati and other languages were also made.

‘Alakh Niranjan’ is the story of Gorakhnath. The story of his birth is ….

The first Guru Machhindra Nath went to a house for bhiksha. The lady of the house, after giving him the bhiksha, asked him if he can bless her to bear a child, a wish that had remained unfulfilled thus far in her life. Guru Machhindra Nath dipped his hand in his jholi and took out some vibhuti (ash). He gave it to her and asked her to partake in it and that she will conceive a son. After he is gone, one of the neighbours tells the lady not to believe all this. The lady gets a doubt and throws the vibhuti on a pile of garbage.

Time passes. After 12 years, Machhindra Nath again comes to the lady and asks how her son was. The lady, ashamed, tells him the truth. The Guru goes to the pile of garbage and gives a loud call, “My son, come here”. From the garbage rises a son of about 12 years. He is Gorak Nath. Machhindranath takes him away and gives him the deeksha (anointing him as his disciple) of Nath Sampradaya. ‘Go‘ means Earth and ‘rakh‘ means to protect. So Gorakh is one who is protected by Mother Earth.

Film Alakh Niranjan-1940 had a cast consisting of Leela Chandragiri, Nandrekar, Chandrakant, Vimal Sardesai, Raja Paranjpe and many others. Today’s song is sung by the Heroine Miss Leela Chandragiri herself. Though she was not a trained singer, she did her best to sing songs. This film was remade in 1950, with the same title but with a different team altogether.

This article is very informative and I enjoyed learning about the film Alakh Niranjan-1940 and its background. The story of Gorakhnath and the Nath Sampradaya is fascinating. I have a question: Did the film Alakh Niranjan-1940 receive positive reviews and success at the box office?

The Marathi version was more successful at the Box office than the Hindi film, though the reviews were good.

Thanks for the post. It was interesting to me to read about there being a ‘Nath Puran’. I had only read that Ghorakpur Mutt follows ‘Nath Sampradaya’
