Hullo Atuldom
‘Hamraaz’ (1968) was a movie that starred Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Vimmi and Mumtaz in lead roles. It was produced by BR Chopra. It was a love story with a murder mystery added making the film very interesting, entertaining & suspenseful. There were remakes of it in the 1990s – ‘Imtihaan’ (1994) and ‘Aarzoo’ (1999).
The ’90s film were true to the original in the part of the story where the girl loves one hero and marries the other thinking that her lover is dead. Also she finds that she is pregnant and tries to commit suicide on discovering this. But her noble-hearted husband prevents her from taking the extreme step & happily becomes a father to the wife’s kid. (I think this was not there in ‘Hamraaz’)
‘Hamraaz’ became a murder mystery when the heroine is killed and that is another difference in the story of the ’90s films. The ’90s films had the hero out to revenge the ‘supposed betrayal’ by the heroine. Then the movies find the ending when all confusion is sorted and the husband dies while saving the heroines’ child from the clutches of the villains who are after the husband’s wealth. (I hope the readers are not confused about the storylines).
Both the films ‘Imtihaan’ and ‘Aarzoo’ had Saif Ali Khan playing the husband’s character to Raveena Tandon and Madhuri Dixit. Sunny Deol & Akshay Kumar played the first loves of the ladies.
So, that then gives the background of the film from which today’s song is – ‘Aarzoo’. It was produced by Vikas Mohan, directed by Lawrence D’ Souza and the story was written by Reema Rakeshnath. Reema is the daughter of yesteryear actor DK Sapru, and is the wife of Madhuri’s secretary Rakeshnath.
The songs of ‘Aarzoo’ are written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Anu Malik. Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Aruna Irani, Laxmikant Berde, Reema Lagoo, Tej Sapru etc. are the others in the cast apart from Madhuri Dixit, Akshay Kumar & Saif Ali Khan. Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan & nu Malik are the voices heard in the songs.
With this post we are wishing the lady in the song – Madhuri Dixit Nene – on turning a year older. Recently, I saw her in a film called ‘Maj-ma’ where she played a ‘real-Hatke’ character of a closet lesbian. Her character is a lady who marries due to family pressures, in spite of being a homosexual, and lives the life of a happily married wife & mother till her secret comes out into the open unexpectedly. The movie was focusing on how the matter needs family support and is most misunderstood by families itself and so-called grownup kids. I liked the way the film ended.
This song is in the voices of Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik.
PS: After writing the above I just revisited ‘Imtihaan’ (1994). That film mostly followed the story of ‘Hamraaz’.

Thanks for the post. I have heard this song on FM. I liked this song in very first listening and enjoyed it. These days FM broadcast simply play the song without mentioning credits.( unlike Radio Ceylon, -it is always Radio Ceylon for me). Fairly good picturisation.
