Hullo Atuldom
In 2019, I had posted a song from Fiza (2000) to wish Karisma Kapoor on her birthday. At that time, I read somewhere that it was on 24th of June. Subsequently, I have been seeing that various entertainment channels on television & media have been putting out birthday specials of Karisma on 25th June.
Even this morning MTV & other such music channels were playing Lolo (Karisma’s pet name) specials. So here is my own Lolo special.
Normally, we don’t “ask a lady her age & a man his wage”. But this birthday of Lolo is a special one, a landmark. She was born on this day, in 1974, as Randhir Kapoor & Babita’s first child. She has acting in her GENES, not a surprise considering that she is from the Kapoor Khandaan.
As I have written in my previous post on Lolo’s birthday, she made her debut in films at a very young age opposite Harish Kumar (of South films) in ‘Prem Qaidi’ which released in 1991. Following which we saw her playing the typical Bollywood heroine in movies like ‘Jigar'(1992), ‘Anari'(1993), ‘Suhaag'(1994). ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ (1994), ‘Raja Babu'(1994), ‘Coolie no.1’ (1994) etc. etc. most of them being masala movies. Then along came ‘Raja Hindustani'(1996) & Dil Toh Pagal Hai'(1997) which had her in a completely different avatar. These movies also got her the best actress awards in all the awards functions that mattered including a National award for her role in ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’.
She was paired opposite most of the leading actors of the 1990s but her pairing with Govinda was very successful – they acted in 11 films together of which 5 were directed by David Dhawan. {The 11th film in which Govinda & Karisma Kapoor are in the cast is ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ though they don’t share screen space.}
She got married in 2003 but not before featuring in Khalid Mohammed’s ‘Fiza'(2000) & ‘Zubeidaa'(2001); both these featured her in non-glamourous roles. She was seen in a television series in 2003-2004 before taking a complete break. She was back in public eye as judge of ‘Nach Baliye’ (alongside Arjun Rampal & Farah Khan on satellite television) in 2008. Since then she takes up work that catch her fancy.
As I was preparing for this post, various songs with Karisma Kapoor kept playing in my head. There are numerous songs that will show her dancing abilities, her sense of comic timing etc.; choosing is difficult. I am taking the easy way out and settling for a song from “Coolie No.1” (1995).
The songs had all the elements that made it popular with the paying masses. They were written by Sameer & composed by Anand- Milind. The playback singers used were Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam, Poornima, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, and Chandana Dixit.
Govinda- Karisma Kapoor- Kadar Khan headed a cast supported by Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Shammi, Tiku Talsania, Harish, Kaanchan & Shakti Kapoor. Mahesh Anand & Kulbhushan Kharbanda were in guest roles. The film was a remake of a Tamil film & was the story of how Sadashiv Amrapurkar (a marriage match-maker) cons wealthy but slightly stupid Choudhry Hoshiar Chand (Kadar Khan) into getting his beautiful daughter Karisma married to a coolie (Govinda) at the state transport bus stand. Not only this, but also, Hoshiar Chand’s younger daughter (Kaanchan) falls in love with a driver (Harish).
I was thinking of the most famous song of ‘Coolie No.1’ ‘tujhko mirchi lagi toh main kya karoon’ to go with this; but then I realized that we are just done with the Jyeshtha month (as per Indian almanac) that got over on 23rd of June. So here is the song from the movie which talks about this specific month. This song is sung by Poornima & Kumar Sanu.
