“Andaaz Apna Apna” which released in November 1994 was a comedy, laugh riot, and a ‘comedy of errors’ which had nothing to do with the original ‘comedy of errors’. I am a huge fan of this movie and so is every member of my family. There is always a smile playing on the lips, waiting to turn into a burst of laughter, whenever we discover the movie on any channel. The comedy was in the scenes and dialogues. The movie had stand-out characters that have stayed in public memory after all the intervening 27 years.

Think of Deven Verma being hoodwinked by his ‘get-rich-quick-scheming’ son Aamir Khan (playing Amar) and you smile or grin. Specially when the son tells the father “main aaj bahut khush hoon” and the father replies “tu jab bhi khush hua hai mera kuch na kuch nuksaan hua hai” and proceeds to list a few incidents. Then we have the barber Jagdeep getting similar treatment from his son Salman Khan (playing Prem). The scene that happens between Mehmood (who plays a casting agent) and Jagdeep is another standout. One thing about this comedy movie was we had seasoned players like Deven Verma, Jagdeep, Mehmood and Aamir Khan who (imho) thought making faces (contorting is not the right word) and Salman Khan who thought saying ‘aila’ in a squeaky tone was comedy. The ladies were spared as they didn’t need to be comic as also the father character of Paresh Rawal. Shakti Kapoor’s character ‘crime-master Gogo’ was more comic than scary as was Paresh Rawal’s Teja (character). Crime-master Gogo’s oneliner (Takiya kalaam) “aaya hoon kuch na kuch leke jaoonga” used to be oft-quoted in my family. The story tried to create comedy by giving the male lead actors filmy names of Amar and Prem trying to pay tribute to the 70s classic.

Tushar Bhatia was the music director of this movie which had 6 songs. As per this article two songs were deleted from the movie to give it a better look (I suppose). Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist and Asha Bhonsle, Abhijeet, S P Balasubramanyam, were the playback singers with a few new names Behrouz Chatterjee, Mangal Singh, Vicky Mehta which were heard for the first time in Bollywood.

Today’s song has Salman Khan serenading the millionaire, heiress Raveena with a song and dance in the middle of the night but with a tiny “dholak” instead of a guitar or violin (as is the general norm for this kind of situations). It is only at the end of the song that Salman (Prem) realizes that the lady with him is Karisma and not Raveena. We have Amar (Aamir Khan) first thinking that Raveena is the one who is responding to Prem but his fears are laid to rest when he sees Raveena outside his window. Then we have Shehzad Khan (a spitting image of his father Ajit) and Viju Khote (playing helpers around the household) also enjoying this midnight entertainment.

Incidentally, the girls switch names, in the movie, to test prospective grooms so Karisma Kapoor who is the actual Raveena (daughter of the millionaire) introduces Raveena Tandon as Karisma (who is the daughter of the millionaire’s munim). So, there is a bit of confusion in the minds of Amar and Prem once the girls reveal their true names and identity. Hope the situation is clear and we now get on to the song which is sung by Asha (Tai) and SPB (Balu Sir)

With this post we also wish Lolo on turning a year younger. Lolo which is the pet name of Karisma Kapoor, the first person from the fifth generation of the Kapoor Khandan to step into Bollywood and carve a niche for herself. She made a name for herself enacting a variety of roles from plain inane to high voltage emotional characters. We saw her play a serious character in the song which was posted two years back. Today we will see her with a cute and endearing smile.

At the outset I must admit that I am a little confused as I write this post. The person/ celebrity/ actress/ star for whose birthday this is, has aged gracefully and looks fabulous even now. But I am confused about her year of birth. When I wrote this post Phir Bhor Bhayee Jaaga Madhuban in 2018 I found information on various sites on the internet by which I had mentioned that she was turning 64. Over the last few weeks I am finding information by which she would be 74 this year. Can a person age 10 years in two years?

Let me explain. In the past few weeks, during this lockdown, one of the satellite channels, showed an old episode of one their dance reality shows where Bindu and Aruna Irani were guests of honour (found out today that they are cousins). This must have been one of the episodes which was originally telecast in the last two years. And I told my husband (bless him for enduring all these re-runs with me) that Bindu turns 69 this year and Aruna Irani is a few years younger and how well she has looked after herself and maintained herself. Then as I was googling to confirm the dates of birth of the two, I was surprised to see that the year of birth is given as 1946. Anyways there is a saying “not to ask a lady her age and a man his wage.” So, let us just wish our dear Aruna Irani a very Happy and healthy life.

She has had along wait before she could settle in life with a man who loved her. She made her debut in movies at a young age of 8 or 9 playing the young Azra in “Gunga Jamuna”. She had to give up on schooling so that she could help support the family which had financial problems and could not educate all eight children. I find that this is the story of many actors of that time. Her father was an Irani and mother a Hindu. Her brothers Indra Kumar (who made the Aamir Khan Madhuri Dixit starrer DIL), Adi Irani (plays mainly character roles in movies and television), Firoz Irani (also an actor. producer, writer, director) are all well settled in the entertainment industry and she has had a major hand in setting them up.

She claims that she was a bad dancer who learnt dancing on-the-job. We have seen her comic side in movies where she had paired with Mehmood in the 70s and later in movies where she was with Asrani and Kadar Khan. She was the topmost actress in Gujarati movies even as she played supporting characters in Hindi, Marathi, Kannada etc. I remember seeing her in the Tamil remake of “Deewar” essaying the same mujra as she had done in Hindi- the song “koi mar jaaye kisi pe yeh kahan dekha hai”. She has produced and directed a few serials and acted in them too.
Today, for her birthday we will be seeing her as a not-so-young bua to Karisma Kapoor and Pooja Batra who are elated that she has finally found someone and likes him enough to think of marrying him. The song is at the engagement of the bua with Pooja’s fiance’s (Sanjay Dutt) uncle/ chachaji Rai Bahadur (Govinda). This movie has the two heroes trying to woo the heroines only Govinda has to double up as chacha and bhatija. In the process, before the niece the bua gets wooed.

The song is from David Dhawan directed “Haseena Maan Jaayegi” (1999) which had Anupam Kher playing the father of the girls, Kadar Khan played father of the boys. A part of the movie is inspired by “Pyaar Kiye Jaa” and we have Govinda donning a grey wig and beard and playing his own chacha. Paresh Rawal, Ashish Vidyarthi adding spice to this all round comedy.

The song is in the voices of Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Ravi Shankar (hearing this name for the first time). Anu Malik is the music director and Sameer the lyrics in-charge.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 7

Welcome all to this post under the ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ – (2010-2020).
Once again we have a movie which has completed a ‘decade’ on the blog with only one of its song posted on the blog.

This movie is ‘Raja Babu-1994’.

Regulars on the blog would be surprised why I am presenting a song from this movie? I am neither a Govinda fan nor is this a song that triggers any memories in my mind.

I want to clarify that I do have a connected memory associated with this movie and I watched it too. But it was not by choice, rather to make used of my waiting time, when I was forced to endure wait of twelve to sixteen hours at Guna (M.P) Railway station.

I was reminded of that incident when I came across the name of thjis movie while checking for the ‘blog ten-year challenge’.

I was travelling from Nagpur to Kota via Bina. At Guna station our train was terminated as there was some problem on the Guna-Kota route. Onward journey was possible only next day. My cousin (from Nagpur) was also travelling with me so we decided to take a round of Guna. There was a theatre near the railway station running this movie ‘Raja Babu-1994’ so (reluctantly for me, because I was not much interested in watching all the new movies then) we decided to watch this movie.

I don’t remember now if I like it then or not.

I think I had only watched very few of Govinda movies viz. ‘Marte Dam Tak-1987’, ‘Swarg-1990’, ‘Hum-1991’, ‘Aankhen-1993’ when I was staying at Kota and watching movies with colleagues on Sundays/holidays was ‘customary’.
However, later on I like him very much in ‘Coolie No.1-1995’, ‘Deewana Mastaana-1997’, ‘Bade Miyaan Chhote Miyaan-1998’ etc.

Recently I get to watched his ‘Bhaagam Bhaag-2006’ on TV.

Coming back to today’s post, one song from ‘Raja Babu-1994’-the much talked about song (or the most popular?) from this movie- has already been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the second song from the movie to be posted on the blog.

As valentine day party songs go, this one is not really so big on the event. Except for the heart shaped balloons, there is no other indication of this being a valentine day song. Point to be noted is that, the blog seems to have ignored this occasion also, along with a host of other days that are specifically designated throughout the year. Whatsapp university does a quite adequate job of reminding us of all these days, be it mother’s day, father’s day, couple day, hug day, chocolate day to name a few. These are just the days which came readily to mind, because a few of them were during this past week.

I remembered this song today just out of the blue from the film “Dil to paagal hai”. I remember seeing this film in theatre, must be in 1997. My elder sister was very fond of Yash Chopra films and the star cast was, as it is very much ascending stars of the era. Nevertheless I remember at one point in the film, where I told my sister that I don’t want to see this film and we are leaving. Which point I don’t care to share here.

This song talking of ‘Chaand’ & ‘Raat’ is actually compliant with my posts series titled ‘Chaandni Raatien”. Composer is Uttam Singh and the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. It is picturized on Shah Rukh Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Shah Rukh and Karishma are at a Valentine Day party, whereas Madhuri Dixit is at her home, dreaming and singing along. At this point I think Shah Rukh and Madhuri haven’t met each other, but are scheduled to meet and fall in love. This song is in anticipation of the things to come in the story, because you see they have read the script and the song was ready, so the situation had to be created for it. Udit Narayan sings for Shah Rukh and Lata Mangeshkar is singing for Madhuri and Karishma both. The song is very catchy too despite being a mood song.

The film is full of melodious hit songs which were a rage then. Film and the songs won quite a few awards too. This song is having the tunes of other songs from the same film, as interlude. Again as I said the characters are anticipating the songs to feature in the film later on. Good imagination all around.

Todays’ post features a rather new song. It is only 19 years old. It is from “Fiza” (2000) which was directed by Khalid Mohammed who used to be known as a film critic before he got into film-making. He has made “Fiza”; “Zubeida”; “Tehzeeb” and “Silsilay”. He is also the son of yesteryear actress Zubeida about whom our in-house encyclopaedia has written in this article.

Before “Zubeida” Khalid Mohammed made “Fiza” with Jaya Bachchan, Karishma Kapoor, Hritik Roshan, with Neha and Bikram Saluja (in miniscule roles of the love interests of Hritik and Karishma). The movie also had Sushmita Sen, Manoj Bajpayee, Isha Koppikar and Asha Sachdev in guest appearances. If I am not wrong this was Jaya Bachchan’s comeback into commercial cinema after being away for many years. Before this she had acted in “Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa” but that was what is called an off-beat or art film.

The movie’s story was:

Six years after Fiza’s (Karishma Kapoor) brother, Aman (Hrithik Roshan) disappears during the 1993 Mumbai riots, she goes to look for him. When she does find him, to her horror she sees that he has joined a terrorist group. She forces him to come home, and he finally re-unites with their mother (Jaya Bachchan). However, his allegiance and thoughts make him want to join the terrorist network, led by Murad Khan (Manoj Bajpai). A confrontation with two men who harass Fiza leads to Aman revealing his involvement with the terrorist network in front of his sister, mother and the police. His mother’s grief and disappointment eventually lead her to commit suicide. Fiza tries once more to find her brother, with the help of Anirudh (Bikram Saluja). Aman has been sent on a mission to kill two powerful politicians; when he does succeed in assassinating them, his own terrorist group tries to kill him. He escapes and Fiza follows him. They confront each other and with the police closing in on him, he asks her to kill him. After much persuasion Fiza kills her brother. Aman dies saying the first Kalma in Islam, “La illa ha ill Allah, Mohammad dur Rasullalah”

Karishma Kapoor was the first Kapoor daughter to enter the film industry if one chooses to forget her paternal aunt (bua) Ritu (Kapoor) Nanda’s walk in the rain in “Shri 420” and Sanjana Kapoor’s (Shashi Kapoor’s daughter) brief film career. She managed to find her spot in the industry by her hardwork and succeeded on her own terms. She began her journey in 1991 as a teenager opposite (south actor) Harish and went on to act in close to 65 films which had her pair with Govinda in some hit comedies of the mid-nineties. Her roles in the 1996 release “Raja Hindustani” and 1997 “Dil Toh Paagal Hai” (DTPH) made audiences realise the range in her abilities. DTPH also got her a National Award and Filmfare and Zee awards for best supporting actress. “Fiza” and “Zubeida” were movies where she was the only actor who was a star. It is amazing that these movies are remembered for her work in them inspite of her fan-following for the masala movies that she worked in that period.

Today she turns a year older (girls never tell their age :)) but doesn’t look her age as she has maintained herself wonderfully. The reason I chose this lesser known song is it shows her dancing abilities, her beauty and the expressiveness of her eyes. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, written by Sameer and Anu Malik is the music director. The song occurs when a group of Fiza’s ex-class fellows comment on how serious a person she is and doesn’t live-life like youngsters; partying and relaxing etc. Isha Koppikar (in the lavender casuals) who is one of her friends asks Fiza to prove the others wrong. Bikram Saluja is also present.

How sweet is Kavita Krishnamurthy sounding, never has she been sweeter than she is here. This has to be the best of Kavita and the best of A. R. Rehman too. I have been listening to this song since last few days and been enamoured by it. So much so that I have looked up the 2006 survey conducted by Outlook magazine to see if this song finds a place in it.

Usually I compliment a song by calling it a gem of a song. But for this one, I will be specific and call it a ‘diamond’ of a song. There is a street called ‘Khade Bazaar’ in Belgaum and we as children would loosely translate it to ‘Standing street’. Come to think of it, it must mean ‘Diamond market’ because ‘khada’ means stone in Marathi. ‘Khade’ is a word used for diamonds too.

When A. R. Rehman first arrived in the hindi film industry with ‘Roja” (1992), his type of music was a total revelation to the industry. The listeners jaded from the trash dished out in the name of music by MD’s in the 80’s were pleasantly surprised in the early part of 90’s. Melody was making a comeback and songs began to add to the appeal of films. The duo’s like Nadeem-Shravan, Anand-Milind and Jatin-Lalit were all contributed to this revival and had a lion’s share in the popular chartbusters of the 90’s. Some of these new generation MD’s were capable of rehashing two/three older songs and creating a new melody. But they created melodious songs, just not very original. A. R. Rehman was the only one creating original compositions and experimenting with instruments. All of them, between them managed to take the hindi film songs appeal to international audiences in to the next millenia too, the malady of plagiarism, notwithstanding. Some more plagiarism from the likes of Anu Malik, Pritam, etc add a bit more creativity from the southern music director like Ilyaraja and M M Kreem(atleast they sounded original to me), indian film music was a huge business internationally.

To add to the appeal of this music and to add to the commercial success among the subcontinent diaspora in UK and North America, the inclusion of fresh voices from across the border became an acceptable norm.

Coming back to Roja and A. R. Rehman. A. R. Rehman has started composing jingles of advertisements as a youngster. The songs of Roja were all masterpieces and it looked like he won’t be able to surpass it. But surpass he did with scores for films like Lagaan, Bombay, Guru, Taal, Delhi 6 to name a few. He is one of the achiever of modern day india in the creative field with an Oscar too and unsurpassed international recognition for his music.

The song presented is from the film ‘Zubeida’ written by Khalid Mehmood and directed by Shyam Benegal. One of the trio of films he made based on stories connected with his own real life. The central protagonist Zubieda played superbly by Karishma Kapoor is the daughter of a big filmmaker, but she is denied a film career. This is a period film situated in post partition period. She ends up with a broken marriage with a Pakistani and a son. She meets a price from ‘Rajasthan’ who plays polo matches in Mumbai, and the rest is history. There are a few goods reviews of the film on imdb site.

There was a surprise in store for me as I tried to find the song links of this film. I found one song audio link, with the cover of CD , which said Farrokh Rattonsey’s “Zubieda’. Again I go into flashback to 1990-91 when I had worked in the offices of the Rattonsey’s cleaving company at Santacruz (W) for a few months. They had film production company named Yelahanka Productions, and made two films that I remember, i.e. Khuddar and Kaash. They are old money of Mumbai, had businesses varying from Diamond cleaving to horse breeding. Their horses have made a name nationally and internationally from what I had gathered while working in their office, and have seen the news in later years too. They also used to publish india’s only/first magazine about race horses and breeding, named “Indian Thorough bred”. It used to be an annual or bi-annual issue. The office of ITB was situated in the same building as the cleaving company office.

Yes … and this diamond of a song. Music score for this film is among A. R Rehman’s best, but this particular number with the trademark longish mukhda and antara’s and amazing rendition by Kavita Krishnamurthy makes in the best song of the decade. Karishma Kapoor is singing this song as ‘Zubieda’ soon after marrying her price charming Manoj Bajpai. Really Karishma is more charming of the couple, with her 50’s style understated sophistication and looking far too innocent. The camera angles are not trying to make her look beautiful and just succeeding in making her look a young, bruised and innocent deer. The deer who is impoverish for love, happy and dances elegantly like a peacock.

Zubeida’s fear and insecurities are all expressed in the song. The subtlety in expressions is the hallmark, which makes this song stand apart from other songs of this genre. Kavita Krishnamurthy’s slight variations while repeating the mukhda each time and the gradual changes in rhythm are appealing to the finer senses. It is almost five and half minute long with only two stanzas. Something special which makes us wish that it will continue forever and not end.

The lyricist is Javed Akhtar and this song is sheer poetry visually also.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 27

Welcome all to today’s(6 april 2019) post in the ‘Blog Ten Year Challenge Series’. The song I am going to present today is, by the standards of the blog, from a very recent movie ‘Raja Hindustani-1996’. And this is the movie falling under ‘Blog 10-year challenge’ today on 06.04.20019.

On this day ten years ago (viz on 6 april 2009), Songs of following movies were posted on the blog:-

All these movies except ‘Raja Hindustani-1996’ have already achieved ‘Yippeeee’ed’ status on the blog. 🙂

If one look back at the years that have passed by after this movie ‘Raja Hindustani-1996’ was released, almost ‘twenty-three’ years have elapsed since. Many things have happened during these twenty-three years in my life. I have been through many changes and shifting of places in my personal life during all these years.

My last post was about my stay at Kota-Rajasthan and my fond memories of that stay. My parents were staying at Parli Vaijnath at that time and my journey to home took thirty-six hours consisting of of train-bus-travel and transit time. The route I would take was Kota to Ratlam by broad gauge train. Ratlam to Purna junction or Indore junction, Indore to Akola and Akola to Parli Vaijnath by bus or Purna to Parli Vaijnath by train of South-Central railway.

Once I had even travelled the complete route by Bus. I travelled from Parli Vaijnath to Akola (seven hours). From Akola I took State Transport Bus for Indore (fourteen hours) and from Indore to Kota another state transport Bus (of MP) travelling almost eight hours.

I was a bachelor then. However, this travel and the journeys continued after my marriage and after having two daughters.

I was still at Kota Site when I got married. So, after that my wife was my co-traveller (:) ) and sometimes we were accompanied by my younger brother or my Father to support us in carrying our luggage. My elder daughter became a new member in our travelling team after her birth. In between my wife was alternatively staying with me for few months and them with my parents at Parli Vaijnath.

Finally, the project at Kota was completed in 1996 and I left for Phulpur-Allahabad leaving my family at Parli Vaijnath.

I reached Phulpur on 15th August 1996 and started there process of settling down there and began looking for a family accommodation so that I could bring my family to stay with me.

I was also doing my graduation through an ‘open university (IGNOU)’ then and did not want to change my study centre Kota. The next examinations were falling due in December and for that I was supposed to travel to Kota again. I attended my exams and took the same route to home via Indore. The Indore connection was important because I had my friends there whose friendship was cultivated by me during my stay at Kota as they were working there for a company from Indore.

I would meet my friends of Indore and spend some time with them. I often stayed at Indore for few days, visited nearby places of interests (tourists places) , some famous temples and watched a few movies also (and that might be a subject of an article in future 🙂 ) But this time, my plan was to visit Kota for my examinations and from there to go to Parli Vaijnath via Indore.

I took a luxury bus from Indore to Akola. This bus had video facility. Those were the days when many people among such bus travellers were quite keen to watch movies in Bus and they would even argue with the transporters if the video was not working. I was more interested in sleeping which was much needed for me because of the previous equally gruelling travel by road.

That day (or rather night) they played two movies back to back. One was ‘Ghatak-1996’ and other was ‘Raja Hindustani-1996’. I watched some parts of these moving in my half-sleep half-awoke state. I liked some songs and some part of both movies. I don’t think I got to watch this movie ‘Raja Hindustani’ again though I recall having watched ‘Ghatak’ again sometime later.

Both the movies were highly successful at the box-office and their music particularly of ‘Raja Hindustani’ was very popular. Both movies earned award nominations and won some of these awards as well.

‘Raja Hindustani-1996’ was directed by Dharmesh Darshan for ‘Cineyug’. It was produced by Alive Morani, Karim Morani and Bunty Soorma. It had Amir Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Suresh Oberoi, Johny Level, Navneet Nishan, Veeru Krishnan, Kunal Khemu (child artist then), Pramod Moutho, Mohnish Behl, Tiku Talsania, Farida Jalal and Archana Puran Singh.

Story of this movie was written by Dharmesh Darshan. And he was co-author in writing the dialogues of this movie alongwith Javed Siddiqui.Editing of this movie was done by Bharat.

Lyrics of this movie were written by Sameer. And as per Wikipedia this movie had total eight songs including two multiple version song (where one song was having three versions).

Music of this movie was composed by Nadeem-Shravan. Whereas the background music was given by Surinder Sodhi.
Alka Yagnik, Alisha Chinai, Bela Sulakhe, Kumar Sanu, Sapna Awasthi, Sapna Mukherjee, Suresh Wadkar and Udit Narayan have given their voices to the songs of this movie.

‘Raja Hindustani-1996’ was released (as per ‘wiki’) on 15th November’1996.

This movie had some very good soundtracks and as mentioned by Atul ji while posting the first song of the movie Aaye ho meri zindagi me tum bahaar banke
, couple of them were reminiscent of the music of the seventies.

When I noted that this movie was eligible for ‘ten-year challenge’, I promptly decided to take up the ‘challenge’. 🙂 I noted that this song has a female version to, and so it was a ‘multiple version’ song. I am sending our editors the lyrics for the female version of this song and requesting them to update the same in the post of this song.

Personally, I like this song Aaye ho meri zindagi me tum bahaar banke (both versions) very much. After watching this movie on that bus journey, this song was playing in my mind for the next few days. Another song “Kitna pyaara tujhe rab ne banaaya” was also very good.

And what to say about the song under discussion ! It was an enormous hit. This song was the highlight of the movie for many people.

The movie was inspired by ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile-1965’. If that 1965 movie had a “pardesi” song viz ‘pardesiyon se ankhiyaan milaana’, then ‘Raja Hindustani-1996’ had ‘its own “pardesi” song, viz Pardesi Pardesi Jaana Nahin’- which is the song under discussion.

The ‘pardesi’ song from ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ was a multiple version song having three versions. Not to be left behind, this “Raja Hinustani” song also has three versions. This song plays important role in taking the story of the movie forward. Like when heroine’s father comes to know about his daughter falling in love with a taxi driver, then – when the hero-heroine are separated due to misunderstanding , with heroine’s stepmother sowing seeds of ‘conflict’ further and heroine is also pregnant at this time, and finally third time – in the end when all ends well and the hero and heroine are re-united.

During all those years I had forgotten that this song was a multiple version song with three versions, and the ‘challenge’ hence got compounded for me. I had to listen to this song many times during its drafting. Also, with the female version to the earlier song added this post serve a purpose of ‘four songs’ “)

In the Suresh Wadkar version of ‘pardesi pardesi jaana nahin’ the hero sings couple of lines which in one version is lip synced by the hero and in another version he lip-syncs in Udit Narayan’s voice. Credit for this third version also mentioned the name of Udit Narayan (as taken from ‘wiki’ page of this movie), I think that is correct. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this and correct please.

With today’s song on the blog plus addition of the female version to the earlier song this movie ‘Raja Hindustani’ will have its five songs covered on the blog.

I know you are eager to listen this song again after so many years so without taking this article too long I am taking you to the song instead which itself is like an ‘epic song’. 🙂

To finish the tale, after reaching Parli Vaijnath, I travelled back to Phulpur, with my wife and daughter accompanying me, with my father also travelling with us to help us in getting settled at Phulpur.

We stayed at Phulpur for a few months, before it was time for my wife to rejoin my parents at Parli Vaijnath in what could be described as a “Pardesi pardesi jaana nahin” situation for me. 🙂

The first part of the song is sung by Sapna Awasthi (lip syncing by Kalpana Iyer), Alka Yagnik (for Pratibha Sinha) and Udit Narayan (lip synced by Aamir Khan).
Second version is sung by Kumar Sanu (on Aamir Khan) and Alka Yagnik (on Karishna Kapoor).
The movie ending third version is sung by Suresh Wadkar (for Johny Lever), Bela Sulakhe (for Navneet Nishan) and Udit Narayan (for Aamir Khan).

Janmashtami is a festival that is celebrated all over the country by all hindu communities. It signifies the birth of Lord Krishna in the Jail where Devaki was imprisoned. The story is that after he was born Vasudeva transports him to Gokul to the home of Yashoda. Hence the next day, viz. the day after Janmashtami is celebrated as Gokulashtami with his life in Gokul being re-enacted as Dahi Handi. As Yashoda was the one who brought him up, she is often regarded as the Maiyya of Krishna. For me the festival entails having sweets being fried, and then stored in the house for me to eat in “krishna-style” for the next few days. 😀

Bollywood music touched its nadir in 1980s when “Disco” music took over the music scene. The fact that Bappi Lahiri and Mithun da were the biggest beneficiary of that era says it all. Bappi Lahiri (though capable of creating great music) preferred to create forgettable music. Mithun da indulded in so called disco “densing”, which, if you watched closely, bore little resemblence to actual “densing”. “Densing”, incidentally was how Mithun da pronounced “dancing”.

Here is a lovely 1970 style song from 1996. The movie is ” Raja Hindustani” and listening to this song almost reminds me of the movie “Asha”(1980) and its dhaba song “Jaane ham sadak ke logon se mahlo waale kyun jalte hain”.
