Daamad (1978) remains to this day, a comedy movie which I place on par with Padosan (1968), Half Ticket (1964), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (2000), etc. The comic timing shown by all the characters, specifically Amol Palekar and Ashok Saraf, is simply brilliant.

Daamad starred Amol Palekar, Ranjeeta, Ashok Saraf, Shreeram Lagoo, Keshto Mukherjee, Preeti Ganguli, etc

The movie was certified by the Censor Board on 15/06/1978. It was produced under the banner Om Films International by Anand Bhosle, A V Mohan and presented by Radha Mohan Films. Directed by Rajat Rakshit, the songs were penned by Yogesh Gaud and composed by Hemant Bhosle. The movie is a remake of famous Bengali movie Mouchak (1974).

The plot of the movie is that:

Sharad (Amol Palekar) belongs to a middle-class family and lives with his brother Shreeram Lagooand sister-in-law Tarla Mehta in Bombay. Sharad gets a factory job in Malavli and accepts it though not interested. The bosses (Rodrigues and Choudhury) are initially rude to him, but soften and pamper him when they realize he is unmarried. Both of them are on the lookout for grooms for their daughters. Chaudhary (Pinchoo Kapoor) invites Sharad home for lunch and introduces him to his daughter Leena (Preeti Ganguly) who promptly falls in love with him. Rodrigues (Maruti) introduces Sharad to his three daughters as well. I remember that one of the daughters is the dancer/actor Jezabel.

Sharad is in love with his neighbour Renu (Ranjeeta Kaur). At the factory, his assistant Khote (Ashok Saraf), wanting to help him get out of the trap set by the bosses, spreads a rumour that Sharad is not of good character. This, however, creates tensions between Renu and Sharad. Chaudhury starts believing that Khote is spreading the rumours to win over Sharad as his own son-in-law. After a series of funny incidents and fumbles, all tensions are finally resolved.

As I mentioned in my opening sentences, the movie is a laugh riot which was enhanced by cameos by Jagdeep and Keshto Mukharjee.

Today’s song, is a part of the fun with the three daughters of Mr. Rodrigues come to Amol Palekars house and dance and sing this song, while forcing him to shake a leg too!

One song is already posted on this blog here.

“Naacho Gaao Maze Udaao” by Asha Bhosle with Amol Palekar and chorus, penned by Yogesh and composed by Hemant Bhosle.

In the song picturization, we can see Amol Palekar with Jazbel and two other ladies whom I can’t identify (knowledgeable readers can shed some light on their identities). At the end of the song we can see Mushtaq Merchant shaking a leg, too!!
