“Khaan Dost”(1976) was directed by Dulal Guha for Ramayan Chitra Mandir, Bombay. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithu Mukherji (new discovery), Sanyen Kappu, Sulochana, Asit Sen, Jagdish Raj, Maruti, Prakash, Shekhar Purohit, Rajan Haksar, Duggal, Saminder Pande, Chandulal, Rajrani, Amar Sen, Sameer, Baby Lubna etc, with special appearances by Subhash Ghai, Jagdeep, Sundar, Leela Mishra and Yogita Bali.

This “social” movie has ended up becoming an obscure movie by now.

The movie had three songs in it.

Two songs from “Khaan Dost”(1976) have been covered in the blog.

Here are the details of the songs that have been covered so far:-

Today is 15th august 2024. 15 August is celebrated as Independence day all over the country. On this occasion, national flag is hoisted. Please remember, national flag is hoisted on Independence day and unfurled on republic day. I became aware of this distinction only towards the end of my career even though I was hoisting/ unfurling the national flag from 1993 onwards in units being headed by me.

National flag is hoisted in all units all over India by head of that unit on 15th august. As mentioned above, I was head of my units right from my early days in Railways. The first time I hoisted/ unfurled national flag was in Purna where I was overall incharge of Mechanical Engineering department spread over geographical area upto Nizamabad in south (150 km), upto Adilabad in East (230 km), upto Manmad in west (372 km) and upto Khandwa in North (390 km). This geographical area spread over Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and MP was bigger than many small countries. On doing conservative back of the envelope calculation, my jurisdiction was spread over 400 km x 400 km = 160000 sq km. To put things in perspective, the area of Bangladesh is 1,48,000 sq km ! The area of Nepal is 1,47,000 sq km !

Much later, I joined Izatnagar workshop in Bareilly on 13 August 2015. I was surprised to know that flag hoisting/ flag unfurling did not take place in that workshop. My predecessors, on noticing this, kept maintaining the past practice, without applying their minds, or without taking the lead to start this practice. it was too late for me to change matters on 15 august 2015. But on 26 January 2016, I became the first person in the history of Izatnagar workshop to unfurl the national flag. Subsequently, I hoisted national flag for the first time in Izatnagar workshop on 15 august 2016. Thus, I set in motion the practice of unfurling/ hoisting national flag from 2016 onwards (59 years after Indian independence).

National flag is unfurled/ hoisted even in places like prisons. This song under discussion is one such song. Here national flag is being hoisted and that is followed by singing of this song. Some cynical prisoners wonder what is there to celebrate and has there been any betterment in their lives after independence. On the other hand, there are some less cynical and more optimistic voices that ask people to look at the brighter side.

This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor , Anand and last but not the least, Kishore Kumar. They are accompanied by chorus. Kishore Kumar’s voivce is heard towards the fag end of the song, and than changes to mood of the song altogether. Shatrughan Sinha, playing the role of a prisoner, lip syncs in Kishore Kumar’s voice. I am unable to identify the actors who lip sync in the voices of Mahendraa Kapoor and Anand. I request our knowledgeable reader to help identify them. We also notice Raj Kapoor playing a police wala.

Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

This is the third and final song from the movie to appear in the blog. With this song, all the songs of the movie get covered in the blog. The movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy independence day. By now we all have realised that we cannot take our independence for granted because thgere are powerful outside forces that will stop at noting to undermine the independence of India and other countries. We have just noticed how a neighbouring country has now fallen victims to mob. That mob has overthrown elected government, forced Supreme court judges to resign, nominated interim government PM. Mobs trying to change policies enacted by elected government is being tried in India as well, but thankfully India is stronger and more resilient. Hopefully India will emerge far more stronger and resilient as time passes. I am sure we in our private capacities will play our roles to strengthen our nation and contribute our mite in the progress and advancement of India.

Lyrics

jis din hum thhe aazaad huye
wo aazaadi ka din aaya
aazaad watan ki dharti pe
aazaad tiranga lahraaya
aankhon mein aaj phir
naach uthhin
tasveeren amar shaheedon ki
aazaad jiyo
aazaad maro
paighaam ye unka yaad aaya

aa hahahahaahaahaahaa

har saal humne to suna
charcha isi paighaam ka

charcha isi paighaam ka
charcha isi paighaam ka

jis par amal na ho sake
paighaam wo kis kaam ka

paighaam wo kis kaam ka
paighaam wo kis kaam ka

aazaad ho kar kya mila
kya phool gulshan mein khila
kaayam hai hum par aaj bhi
zulmo sitam ka silsila

zulmo sitam ka silsila
zulmo sitam ka silsila

ae ae ae ae ae
ae ae
apne lahu se seench kar
apne lahu se seench kar
aazad gulshan kar diya
ehsaan unka bhool kar
tum poochhte ho kya mila
tum poochhte ho kya mila
jhoothhe ho tum
jhoothhe hain hum
kya dosh phir paighaam ka
badnaam kyun karte ho yaaron
naam is paighaam ka
jee naam is paighaam ka
jis par amal na ho sake
paighaam wo kis kaam ka

paighaam wo kis kaam ka
paighaam wo kis kaam ka

hey ae ae ae ae ae
ki bhool to paayi saza
karte ho yaaron kyun gila
hum jurm karna chhod den
to khatam ho ye silsila
to khatam ho ye silsila

hey ae ae hey ae
mujrim ye chhote qaid hain

hum qaid hain
hum qaid hain

mujrim ye chhote qaid hai
jo hain bade aazad hain
wo kis kadar khushhaal hain
hum kis kadar barbaad hain

hum kis kadar barbaad hain
hum kis kadar barbaad hain

anjaam apna ye hua
un par laga ilzaam kya
jis par amal na ho sake
paighaam wo kis kaam ka

paighaam wo kis kaam ka
paighaam wo kis kaam ka
paighaam wo kis kaam ka

Atul Ji,
thanks for the post. Good to know about the largeness of the (workshop) units you headed in your service period.
As for the song, the two actors who sing on screen in Mahedra Kapoor’s voice are Rajan Haksar,(quaidi 208), for sure & Shekhar Purohit (quaidi 230), mostly. 🙂

In Railways, there are basically two types of units. Division- where trains are run, and workshops where these trains come for overhaul. I have worked in division, as well as workshops for long durations. Then I have also worked in Headquarters for a few years.

Atul ji,

Thanks for your interesting post, as usual.

I am amazed that despite heading such large establishments during your service time, you still managed to nurture and develop this Blog for the fans of Hindi film music. Hats off to you. And a big ‘Thank You’ too !

Thanks for the comment. When I was working, I took these things for granted. Only now, when I think about it, I realise that I have been entrusted with some very interesting and also challenging assignments during my service.
