(Gulzar Saab’s 90th birthday 18th August’2024)
Today 18th August, 2024 is the ninety-first birthday of Poet, Lyricist, Writer, Director and Producer Gulzar Saab. On this occasion we are celebrating his birthday here on this blog by posting songs penned by him.
In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Naram Garam-1981’. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for ‘Film Group, Bombay’. This movie was produced by Subhash Gupta & Uday Narayan Singh. The cast of this movie has Amol Palekar, Swaroop Sampat, Utpal Dutt, A.K. Hangal, Kiran Wairale, Padma Chavan, Suresh Chatwal, Anand, T.P. Jain, Sunder, Javed Khan, Bishen Khanna, Vijay Ghosh, Saral Mukherjee, Adarsh Tandon, Mukund Dada, and Chandramohan Khanna, Devi Chand, Shatrughan Sinha and others. Om Prakash, Dina Pathak, Meena Roy, and Neelu Phule had a special appearance in this movie.
‘Naram Garam’ has six songs in it which were all penned by Gulzar. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. The singers for the songs of this movie included Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar, Pancham, Sapan Chakravarty, Sushma Shreshtha and Shatrughan Sinha.
Gulzar had a long and fruitful association with director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Their association has given us some of the most memorable and unforgetteble movies in the history of Hindi Films. These movies also had unforgetteble music in them. Music has also always remained the highlight of movies where lyrics were penned by Gulzar Saab for movies directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
“Naram Garam”(1981) is one example of the collaboration of Hrishikesh Mukherjee with Gulzar and R D Burman. This movie is said to be a sequel to the Hrishikesh-Gulzar-R.D. Burman’s earlier combination ‘Golmaal-1979’.
‘Naram Garam-1981’ is the last movie where Gulzar and Hrishikesh Mukherjee work together. Let us have a look on the movies where Gulzar worked for movies directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and his role there.

The song under discussion is sung by Pancham (R.D. Burman) and Sapan Chakravarty. It is a song that plays in the background while titles of the movie appear on the screen, with a male fugure dancing on the screen.
appear on the screen.
The lyrics of this song contains the word “chaand” in it. “Chaand” has been a favourite word for Gulzar who has used it as a metaphor in his poetry as well as his lyrics for films. Listening to this song would also remind readers a well-known song where Gulzar Saab compares ‘chaand’ to ‘chhaalaa’ (blister) … I am not mentioning that song here. I expect readers to mention it in the comments. 🙂
Let us now enjoy this wonderful song by Gulzar Saab and savour this light hearted creation from a lyricist who is often associated with serious philosophical and meaningful songs.

Avinash Ji
Thanks for the post. Though I have seen’ Naram Garam’, I did not register this song mainly because, probably, attention was on reading the credits. A peppy song indeed.
I am a great fan of Hrishikesh Mukherji. I was pleased to read your chart of Gulzar- Hrishikesh M association. I was not aware of some details of the chart.
