————————————————————————

(Khayyam Saab’s Sixth ‘Remembrance Day’ 19th August’2024)

Today 19th of August’2024 is the fifth ‘Remembrance anniversary’ of legendary music director Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, whom we fondly know as Khayyam Saab. He was born on 18th February 1927 in a village Rahon in the District of Jalandhar- Punjab.

From Jalandhar he came to Delhi and from Delhi to Lahore to Mumbai again back to Lahore and finally to Mumbai to start his career in Hindi Films in 1948.

He started his musical career as a Singer first, singing a duet in the movie ‘Romeo and Juliet-1947’ with Zohrabai Ambalewali. Later he got his first assignment to compose music for the movie ‘Heer Ranjha-1948’.

I am once again repeating here the statistics given in the book ‘Khayyam’ – The Man -His Music’, researched, compiled, and edited by Vishwas Nerurkar and Bishwanath Chatterjee, since 1948 to 2007 Khayyam Saab composed music for 55 movies (released) for 321 songs. As many as 17 movies where he composed music for 60 songs were not released for various reasons and even some of them were shelved and were not completed. (He had also given music to 194 non-filmy songs composed for various albums including patriotic songs and others. He also composed music for 08 TV serials composing 45 songs.). On our blog we have so far covered 217 songs composed by Khayyam Saab.

As a tribute to Khayyam Saab today on his sixth ‘remembrance day’ we will be posting some of his compositions here on this blog.

In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Mera Bhai Mera Dushman-1967’.
The information about this movie that HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions is that, this movie was directed by Muhammad Hussain for ‘Seth Productions, Bombay’. It was a movie of ‘social genre’. The cast of this movie has Premnath, Shyama, Mukri, Indira Bansal, Rajan Haksar, Kamal Kapoor, and Nalini Chonkar. HFGK Vol-IV does not mention the list of the songs for this movie too.

However there is some more information about this movie ‘Mera Bhai Mera Dushman-1967’ is available in the book ‘Khayyam’ – The Man -His Music’ which I am adding here further. As per this book the other artistes for this movie are Jay Kay, Pratima Devi, Bela Bose, Maya Das, Chand Burque, Raj Verma, Jeelani, Polson, C.L. Sahu, Peeta Wallah, Fazal, Deepak, Bholanath, Jerry, Prakash, Nishan, Arvind, Toofan Kumar, Umesh Kumar and Asha Rani. This movie was produced by Jagdish Kumar Seth (Jay Kay) who also acted in this movie.

As per the book this movie has seven songs (including one which was excluded- though recorded this song was neither included in the movie nor released on disc. This was the song sung by Madan Saigal (the son of Late K.L. Saigal). The lyricists for this movie are Kaifi Azmi (four songs) and Majrooh Sultanpuri (three songs). The singers list for this movie includes Asha Bhonsle, Mubarak Begum, Jagjit Kaur, Mohd Rafi, Amar, Bhooshan, and Madan Saigal.

So far only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog. Somehow this movie where music was composed by Khayyam Saab lags behind in comparison to his other compositions posted on the blog. Earlier I thought that, may be its’ songs were unavailable but some of the links for the songs are as old as fourteen years old.

May be the songs of this movie remain lesser heard or ‘never heard songs’ because of this movie was too a lesser known or obscure type of movie.
Now, even the movie is available on internet. However its print is of poor quality and that robs one’s interest to watch this movie. I started to watch it but could not continue it after 10/15 minutes. I will try again to watch this movie.

Today, as a tribute to Khayyam Saab I am presenting a song from this movie which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and on screen it is lip-synced and performed by actress Shyama. This is a nice romantic song where the girl has fallen in love with the boy and she is expressing her feelings . We can see actor Premnath present in the picturisation of this song.

mehki mehki latein bikhraaun
mast aankhon se ras chhalkaaun
mehki mehki latein bikhraaun
mast aankhon se ras chhalkaaun
aaj kehti hai ye angdaayee
ban ke titlee kahin ud jaaun
adaa jaadoo
hansee qaatil
nazar sharmaayee jaatee hai
na jaane kyun
ishaaron mein
sharaarat aa hi jaatee hai
adaa jaadoo

apnee shokhee
mujhe tadpaaye
chaal dil par qayaamat dhhaye
apnee shokhee
mujhe tadpaaye
chaal dil par qayaamat dhhaye
roop mera
lubhaaye mujhko
pyaar apne se hotaa jaaye
adaa jaadoo
hansee qaatil
nazar sharmaayee jaatee hai
na jaane kyun
ishaaron mein
sharaarat aa hi jaatee hai
adaa jaadoo
hansee qaatil
nazar sharmaayee
jaatee hai
na jaane kyun
ishaaron mein
sharaarat aa hi
jaatee hai
adaa jaadoo
hansee qaatil
