Today’s song is from the film ‘Beti’ (1941).

This film was made by Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Jayant Desai. The music was by Gyan Dutt. The film cast consisted of Khursheed, Vasanti, Arun Ahuja, E Bilimorea, Ghori, Kesari, Khatoon, Nagendra, Rewa Shankar etc. 1941 was the beginning of the second decade of the talkie films. Many actors, singers, MDs and directors who rolled over to talkie films from the silent era, slowly started retiring and the new generation took over slowly. Actors like Nagendra, Rewa Shankar, Ghori, Kesari, Khatoon, and Bilimorea who were in this film ended their careers in the next few years.

1941 was the first year in the second decade of the talkie era and it was the beginning of the emergence of a new film industry. When talkie started in 1931, for many years after that, the films were made by the people who had done work in the silent films. These films had a spill over for the silent era artistes. Once the films started talking, most silent artistes who could not speak Hindi or Urdu automatically disappeared. Thus started the influx of new actors who could speak Hindi and sing songs, in whatever way they could. Intelligent directors like V Shantaram, Bhavnani, Sohrab Modi, Chandulal Shah, Himanshu Rai, BN Sircar, LV Prasad and a host of Gujarati directors understood that the talkie needs a different treatment than silent films. Music directors from stage dramas tried their hand in composing film music.

In the next 8-9 years, there was a perceptible change in the film making, acting, singing, and composing music in the films that were made. Quality artistes from the silent era continued for some more years – finally giving way to the new artistes. The 30s and the 40s mostly differed in film music and story contents. The new blood composers like Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Naushad, Ghulam Haider, K Datta, Hansraj Behl, Bulo C Rani, Gyan Dutt and many more replaced the Parsi, Marathi and Gujarati drama music to more acceptable lilting songs. Many musical films were made and some everlasting songs were composed by these people. At the end of the 1940s, one more major change in the film industry took place due to Partition. Let us see some important films and events of 1941….

Sasural and Ummeed were two films in which Noorjehan senior acted and sang. However these films are usually wrongly included in the filmography of malika e tarannum Noor jehan. She entered Hindi films only with the film ‘Khandan’ in 1942 at Lahore.

The story of the film ‘Beti’ (1941) was. . .

Rai Bahadur Vidyapati has a small daughter Kiran (Vasanti) who has been closely looked after by a group of servants and nurses. However, the child dislikes the style of her upbringing as she has no freedom that a child would normally like to get. One day, she moves out of her house without the knowledge of her servants and watches the juggler (E Billimoria) performing the usual monkey games in the street. After feeling free from the watchful eyes of her nurses and servants, she follows the juggler to his home and insists on staying with him. Juggler’s wife (Khatoon) is not happy in feeding one more child as she already has 11 children to feed. But the juggler’s musician brother, Jeevan (Arun Ahuja) takes Kiran in his charge.

Years pass by which time Jeevan has met a girl Jyoti (Khursheed Bano) who has a good voice for singing. Both Jeevan and Jyoti become partners in the musical bandwagon. When everything was going smoothly, Jyoti’s uncle, who is a strong man, wants Jyoti to get married to Nandu, a rich old fool in consideration of some money. But Jyoti is already in love with Jeevan. With ups and downs in their romance due to the wicked uncle, Kiran (Vasanti) who has already been restored to her father’s home, becomes the guardian angel and through devious ways, she gets Jeewan and Jyoti married.

Khursheed and Vasanti were both singers and actresses. No wonder they sang most of the film’s songs. Khursheed had 4 solos and 4 duets. Vasant had 3 solos and 4 duets. Arun Ahuja has 1 solo and 1 duet and Kesari also has 1 solo and 1 duet. Singer Khursheed was on the top in the early 40’s. Later in the film ‘Tansen’ (1943), she gave a commendable performance opposite the great KL Saigal. Vasanti too was in good form. While Vasanti got married and left films in 1946, Khursheed migrated to Pakistan in 1947.

A lot has been written on Khursheed, so instead of repeating it, here is an excerpt from an edited interview of Khursheed, taken by Pakistani reporter Naved Rasheed, in 1992 at Karachi [courtesy Cineplot].

Khursheed Bano was born as Irshad Begum in Lahore, on 14th April 1914. As a child she lived in the Bhatti Gate area next to Allama Iqbal’s house. The two families were pretty close. Khursheed was a child then. There was no ambition of joining the showbiz bandwagon then and it was by chance that led her to this arena.

Khursheed was very still young when she became an actress in the early 30’s. The era of silent movies had already ended with the release of ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931 and the Indian film industry was going through a revolution. What set her apart from other heroines were her attractive face and certain flamboyance owing to which she made her presence felt. And then she was a very good actress who could be melodramatic and happy-go-lucky with equal ease.

Each star then was required to playback for themselves and Khursheed was lucky to have a good voice. Hence started the brilliant era of some timeless classical and exemplary numbers like “Panchhi Baawara Chaand Se Preet Lagaaye“.

The graceful and decent actress was luckier to secure some of the best films including ‘Sitara’, ‘Shaadi’, ‘Musafir’, ‘Pardesi’, ‘Bhagat Surdas’, ‘Dekha Jaye Ga’, ‘Shehanshah-E-Babar’ and ‘Tansen’. ‘Pardesi’ had a very famous soundtrack comprising of memorable numbers by the late actress. In ‘Tansen’ she played the protagonist Tani with Kundan Lal Saigal as Tansen. Together they made indelible performances and the role took her to great heights. She even transcended Saigal with her strong performances and pretty looks and her fans started calling her Tani after that.

Her leading men in those days apart from Saigal were Motilal, Ishwar Lal, Nazeer and Sadiq Ali. She made a successful pair with Motilal the most. Her female contemporaries included actresses of caliber like Kanan Bala, Devika Rani, Leela Chitnis, Suraiya, Swaranlata and Noor Jehan. The last three were her juniors.

Khursheed said that there was no such thing as rivalry in those days and actresses worked in close coordination. Abusing, backbiting or gossiping was not amongst their traits. Even the male stars with whom she worked treated her with great respect and there were no scandals.
Though she was an accomplished singer, acting remained her forte and first love. “Singing was a requirement to be a heroine in those days”, she said, “and even heroines with not too good voices were forced to sing if they were to act. But the composers were so good that they managed to get the best out of them then. Each song was recorded after several rehearsals. But I was an actress first and singing was just to complement that.”

Khursheed was not too happy with the way films shaped up in the years to come. So much so that she never wanted to see films anymore. In the interview she expressed her displeasure, “In spite of the resources and much higher budget, there is not a single film maker in the entire subcontinent who could make a film even half as good as the films made in my era. Ours were simple films but treated well and had strong content. Plus the hard work and honesty of each unit member is reflected in the entire film. This thing is missing now. A film is not only about technique, rather the issue, sensitivity and sincere dedication too.”

Following partition in 1947, Khursheed opted to move to Pakistan. She worked in two Pakistani films too – ‘Mandi’ and ‘Fankaar’. But then she decided to quit and tied the knot with a Karachi based businessman Yousaf Bhai Mian. They had one daughter who lived in the US when the interview was conducted. She then concentrated on her marriage alone and emerged equally successful on the home front as much as she was in films. She was happy that she quit films before their standards declined.

Khursheed Bano sang about 170 songs in about 40 films in India.

Here is a song by Khursheed and Vasanti, with Chorus, which is very good. Let us enjoy this duet….
