Today’s song is a duet from the film Punarmilan-1940.
My favourite Marathi/Hindi/English author ISAQ MUJAWAR has written several – over 30 – books on Hindi and Marathi old films, people and related topics. One of his books in English is ” Maharashtra – The Birthplace of the Indian Film Industry”. This is a very rare book to find one. I have the original as well as its xerox copy. The original book was gifted to me by my Friend from Ahmedabad, Mr. P.S.Seshadri. He is an occasional visitor and commenter of this Blog.
The title of the book is very apt and correct. The origin of film making in India, be it a short film, a silent film or the first Talkie film took place in Maharashtra. Not that there were no efforts made in other places, but they were very sporadic and came only after its beginning in Maharashtra. So, when silent films initially and Talkie films later started getting made on wholesale basis in Marathi and Hindi in Bombay, Kolhapur and Pune, it was natural that Marathi actors, actresses, MDs, Directors and Technicians etc. were in large numbers in the film industry from the local land.
Actors like V.Shantaram, Nandrekar, Marutirao Pehelwan, Master Vithal, Master Vinayak etc, actresses like Nalini Tarkhad, Durga Khote, Leela Chitnis, Meenakshi Shirodkar etc. in the first lot and Nalini Jaywant, Ranjana, Shanta Apte, Shanta Hublikar Vanmala, Hansa Wadkar etc. in the next generation and Nutan, Usha Kiran etc in the last batch, MDs from Govindrao Tembe, Annasaheb Mainkar to C.Ramchandra, Sudhir Phadke, Snehal Bhatkar, N.Datta. K. Datta, Datta Davjekar etc. were crowding the Marathi and the Hindi film industry since the initial years.
Out of these early Heroines,4 Heroines- Shanta Apte (1916-1964), Snehprabha Pradhan (1920-1930), Durga khote (1905-1991) and Hansa Wadkar (Ratan Salgaonkar in real life,1924-1971) had few things common.
They operated in films during almost the same time period.
They were educated and hailed from upper castes.
They all were rebellious in nature.
They all had failed marriages.
They all worked in Marathi stage dramas and
They all wrote Autobiographies in Marathi ( Shanta Apte- Jau mee Cinemaat ? means- shall I join films ? ), (Snehprabha Pradhan-Snehankita), ( Hansa Wadkar- Sangte Aika
means- Listen to me. A Hindi film Bhoomika-with Smita Patil- was made on this book) and Mee-Durga Khote ( I-Durga Khote) by Durga Khote.
No wonder then that Snehprabha Pradhan was called by Bombay Talkies to act as heroine in their film “Punarmilan”-1940, opposite Kishore Sahu, who was just 2 films old. Snehprabha Pradhan was born on 20-10-1915. Her mother became a widow, but married a social worker Vithalrao Pradhan. Her mother Tarabai could not decide between two names -Snehlata and Ratnaprabha, for her,so she combined parts of these names and named her Sneh-prabha. The first 10 years of her life were spent in different cities like Bombay, Nagpur, Poona, Lahore, Delhi and Calcutta and she learnt 4 languages (Marathi, Hindi, Urdu and Bangla) fluently. She attended college but could not get the degree as her mother fell sick and father left them high and dry. Family friend Chiman bhai Desai offered her a film PUNARMILAN-1940,opposite Kishore Sahu,in Bombay Talkies.
She married Kishore Sahu, but within a year they separated. She got 3 more films in 1940- Saubhagya,Sajni and Civil marriage. In 1942,she did a Marathi film,’Pahili Mangalagaur’ in which Lata Mangeshkar acted for the First time. Lata sang songs also with Snehprabha Pradhan. This Marathi film had earned ‘ A ‘ censor certificate,as there was a bedroom scene in which there is darkness on the screen, but hushed voices were heard. In those days some people came with Torches to the film,so that they could see ‘something’ in the dark scene ! She acted in 17 films. She also sang 56 songs in 13 films. Her last Hindi film was ‘ Birha ki Raat-50 ‘.
After she divorced Kishore Sahu, she was introduced to a British soldier on war duty in India-Edward Sparkes. Their romance became well known. They travelled all over India, but could not marry, as he had to return to England in 1947.
In 1946, when Tarabai-her mother died, she was so heartbroken that she contemplated suicide also. In the early 50s, she came in contact with the famous doctor of Bombay Dr. V.N.Shirodkar, with whom she stayed for another 40 years of her life. After leaving films, she did some noteworthy roles on the Marathi stage. She wrote several books too, like her autobiography-” Snehankita” and ” Rasik prekshakanna saprem” etc. Snehprabha Pradhan died on 7-12- 1993.
Snehprabha was the Dreamgirl of Dev Anand who wanted to work with her. He acted with Nargis in Khel-1950 which was a flop. He never wanted to work with Nargis again in his life, but when a film ‘Birha ki Raat’-1950 was offered to him opposite Nargis,he accepted it only because Snehprabha Pradhan was in it. Thus Dev Anand’s dream was fulfilled !
Film Punarmilan-1940 was directed by Najam Naqvi, MD was Ramchandra Pal and the cast was Snehprabha, Kishore Sahu, Shahnawaz, Anjali devi, Mumtaz Ali, Sunalini Devi etc. Director Najam Naqvi was a case of ” Same Name Confusion”. When Devika Rani eloped with her Hero Najmul Hasan to Calcutta, the matter was not only the talk of the town, but the whole episode of elopement had become a matter of embarrassment for the continuity man working in the same studio. His name was also Najmul Hasan. Because of the same name, this innocent chap -who had nothing to do with the elopement drama, had to suffer staring eyes and hush hush whisperings within the studio and the film circle of Calcutta !
He was Najmul Hasan Naqvi, born on 11-4-1913 at Moradabad-UP. He was working in Bombay Talkies doing odd jobs-continuity man and even as an actor in Achhut kanya-36.. He was a very hardworking person. After this episode of elopement, he changed his name to a shorter edition- Najam Naqvi.
He worked in the Direction department and his first film as an independent Director was PUNARMILAN-1940. He went on directing films like Raja Rani-42, Tasveer-43, Naya Tarana-43, Panna-44, Prithwiraj Sanyogita-46, Nateeja-47, Parayee Aag-48, Actress-48, Nirdosh-50, Rangili-52 and last film- Samrat-54.
In 1955, Najam Naqvi migrated to Pakistan and directed 7 films from Kunwari Bewa-56, Naghma e dil-59, Dil e nadaan-60, Qaidi-62, Ek manzil do rahein-62, Ek tera sahara-63 and lastly Payal Ki Jhankaar-66. Najam Naqvi died on 26-1-82 at Lahore. Due to the same name, many sites including IMDB mix up the filmography of these two artistes.
There is another name in the cast which also was a case of “Same Name Confusion” – Anjali Devi. This actress is not the famous South indian actress Anjali Devi ( 8-12-1927 to 13-1-2014 ), who acted in films like Ek tha Raja-51( dubbed film), Shuk Rambha-53,Ladki-53, Devta-56, Suvarna Sundari-57 etc etc. This Anjali Devi of the 40s was different. As usual, I find that the filmography of south Anjalidevi includes films done by Anjali Devi of the 40s. This is what I call Same Name Confusion.
Miss Anjali Devi’s real name was Durgesh kumari. She was born at Benaras in 1926 in a respectable Brahmin family. Her education was not much but she was fluent in Hindi, Urdu, English and Sanskrit. At the age of 14 years, she came to Bombay, to fulfil her desire of becoming an actress.
She joined Ranjit Films and worked in film Pardesi in the year 1940. The film was released in 1941. She was credited as Durgesh in this film. She was called to Bombay Talkies to work in the film ‘ Punarmilan’-40, directed by Najam Naqvi. When a section of artistes, led by S.Mukherjee, left Bombay Talkies to start Filmistan in 1942, one of the BT directors N.C.Acharya also left and started his own company Acharya Art Productions. Anjali Devi also left to join Acharya.
She acted in 3 films of Acharya, Kunwara Baap-42, Uljhan-42 and Aage Kadam-43. She later on acted in Paristan-44, and Parivartan-49. She then got married to N.C.Acharya and settled as a Housewife.
The story of the film Punarmilan was….
PUNARMILAN-1940 opens with a party hosted for celebrating the graduation of Kumar(Kishore Sahu), son of Gopinath, a rich Landlord. Jayanti(Sunalini Devi) ,his daughter is also present. After the party,in the night,Kumar finds Gangaram, the close friend of Gopinath, murdered at night with Gopinath standing there with a Pistol. Kumar takes the Pistol and runs away to take the murder’s blame on him. Gopinath gets a paralytic attack and can not communicate. Police chase Kumar in vain.
Kumar runs to another town, where he faints near the house of Koyal(Snehprabha Pradhan) a street dancer/singer. She takes him, nurses him and in due course falls in love with him, as per the scriptwriter’s wishes.
Meanwhile, Jayanti brings her father to the same town for treatment. A suave but crook businessman Manohar(Peethawala) befriends her. To please her, he fixes the programme of Koyal in a theatre, where Jayanti meets her brother Kumar. Manohar sees this and starts blackmailing Jayanti for marriage. She is taken to a Rest house. Koyal and Kumar reach there and rescue Jayanti but Kumar is arrested.
Meanwhile, Gopinath responds to the treatment and gives a statement to police that he killed Gangaram, as he was trying to rape Jayanti.
Kumar is released and there is Punarmilan of Kumar and Koyal.
Today’s song is a duet sung by Snehprabha and Arunkumar Mukherjee. Enjoy….
