#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————

In this post I am presenting a song composed by Bhupen Hazarika.

Bhupen Hazarika was born on 8th of September’1926 in Sadiya, Assam. He left this worldly place on 5th of November 2011.

Bhupen Hazarika needs no introduction to music lovers all over the world. Known as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’ he wrote over eight hundred songs in Assamese. His love for his mother tongue and his culture, particularly the folklore of Assam, can be experienced in his poetry, lyrics, compositions and parables that speak of the socio-political and other general folk landscape of Assam. As a music composer he used the folk music with a touch of contemporary.

Today’s song is one such song which is about a ‘marriage song for the bride’s bidaai’. In this song we can see the many ‘marriage rituals’ for a bride from the ‘haldi’ to ‘dolee bidaai’.

Today’s song is from the ‘1985’ movie ‘Ek Pal’. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 15.11.1985. It might have released to screens in ‘1986’ and thus many sources mention the year of the movie as ‘1986’. (One song from this movie have been presented on the blog earlier.

“Ek Pal-1985” (alias ‘A Moment) was produced by Kalpana Lajmi and Bhupen Hazarika. It had Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Farooque Sheikh, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Dina Pathak, Sreela Muzumdar, Amalsen, Sunil Mukherjee, Sunila Pradhan, Dr Kumar Pradhan, Ranna Pandya, Kuku Mehra, Dina Bhuyan and others. Dr Bhupen Hazarika and Deepa Lagoo had a guest appearance in this movie. Lyrics and dialogues of this movie were written by Gulzar. Screenplay of this movie is written by Kalpana Lajmi and Gulzar. Editing of this movie is done by Bhanudas Divkar.

“Ek Pal” has eight songs sung by singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Haimanti Shukla, Bhupen Hazarika, Bhupinder Singh and Nitin Mukesh. Music is composed by Bhupen Hazarika.

This movie was introduced on the blog by our senior member Shri Sadanand Kamath jee. I am reproducing below the text from his article giving the background of this movie and the gist of the story of this movie. However I am not taking the full story text here. Instead I have kept it till the appearance of the today’s song sequence in this movie.

The film is a love triangle with a difference that the woman protagonist is not caught between her two lovers but with her husband and a past lover. A moment (Ek Pal) of weakness on the part of the woman protagonist with her past lover has consequences on the relationship with her husband. Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Farooque Shaikh are the main actors. Other supporting actors are Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Deena Pathak, Shreela Mazumdar, Amal Sen, Sunila Pradhan, Deepa Lagoo etc. The gist of the story is as under:

Priyam Chaliha (Shabana Azmi) is born in a middle-class family living in Shillong. On the occasion of Bihu festival, she with her parents visits their native place, Jorhat, and stay in their ancestral house. During the festival gathering, Priyam meets Jeet Barooah (Farooque Shaikh), son of a tea baron. She is impressed with his charm and Jeet also gets infatuated by her grace.
After the completion of the festival holidays, Priyam returns to Shillong with her parents (Shreeram Lagoo and Deena Pathak). Jeet follows Priyam to Shillong and continue their romantic sojourns. At the same time, Ved Hazarika (Naseeruddin Shah), who works as an Engineer in tea plantation often visits Priyam’s house. He appears matured and balanced person for whom the work is worship.
In the meanwhile, Jeet, who wants to enjoy the companionship with Priyam without the firm commitment of taking their relationship to a marriage, wriggle out of the relationship by informing Priyam that he is flying to Harvard for higher studies. Priyam is shocked and in a moment of emotional upheaval, she tells her father about her relationship and break up with Jeet. At that moment, her father reveals that Ved has asked him for her hand in marriage. Priyam and Ved get married.

The song under discussion takes place when the ‘bride’ is going through the rituals to get ready for the marriage and being given ‘farewell’ after. That is all covered as the main song is played in the background. We can see Shabana Azmi, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Dina Pathak, Naseeruddin Shah, Farooque Shaikh and many others in this part of the song. The sad version of this song containing only the mukhda of this song takes place in the movie when Priyam (Shabana Azmi) is sitting and waiting for her husband Ved on their first night after wedding. Seemingly tired after the marriage proceedings she is recollecting her ‘bidaai’ where Jeet (Farooque Shaikh) was one among the people who carried her ‘dolee’.

Singers for the song are Bhupinder Singh, Bhupen Hazarika, Usha Mangeshkar and Haimanti Shukla. Gulzar the lyricist has ‘painted’ the ‘landscape of a village in Assam’ (for a change, but inspired from and based on Bhupen Hazarika’s folk songs as told by Gulzar himself). Listening to this song transports us to the geographical scenario and culture of Assam.

Let us listen to this wonderful composition from Bhupen Hazarika!!!

(Reference for Gulzar’s inspiration for the lyrics of this song – as told to Yateendra Mishra by Gulzar in his book ‘Gulzar Saab – Hazaar Raahen Mud ke dekheen…)
