(Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee – 102nd Birth Anniversary)
——————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1988 movie ‘Naamumkin’. This movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It is one of the lesser known movies directed by him. He has given us many master class movies as a director but this movie is not one of them. I was not even of aware this movie when it was released in theatres.

“Naamumkin-1988” was produced under the banner of ‘Neil Films Inc. Production, Winnipeg, Canada’. It was produced by Bidhu S. Jha. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.08.1988. The cast of this movie included Zeenat Aman, Vinod Mehra, Raj Babbar, Om Shivpuri, Dr Shreeram Lagoo and Sanjeev Kumar (in friendly appearance). They were supported by Jaywant Pathare, Amritanshu Jha, Vikas Khanna, Adharsh Sharma, with Waris Shere, Nasser Shaboo, Jeet Saxena, Frank Marino, Sunita Singh, Jerry Altwell, Vidhu M. Shekhar, Dorothy, Terry McDonald, Baby Nandita, and others. Leslie Winiarz and Master Sheraz made their debut with this movie.

Story of ‘Naamumkin’ was written by D.N. Mukherjee and scenario was written by Sachin Bhowmick. The producer of this movie Bidhu S. Jha also wrote the screenplay for this movie. Dialogues were written by Ashok Rawat. Editing of this movie was done by Anil Saxena and V. S. Ohm.

If one goes through the titles of this movie one can notice that many of the crew members of this movie were also involved in acting in this movie. Bidhu S. Jha the producer and screenplay writer of this movie was a Winnipeg based Indian and he was also involved in politics of Canada. This movie ‘Naamumkin’ was largely shot in Canada and U.S.

‘Naamumkin’ has four songs including one multiple version song and additionally it has one or two (?) snippets of the multiple version song too. Anjaan wrote all the songs for this movie and music was composed by Rahul Dev Burman. The playback singers for the songs in this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal.

The first song from this movie was posted on the blog on 17.01.2015 which was presented by Aparna H.M. In this post she has also given a brief account of this movie as given below.

The movie stars Raj Babbar, Vinod Mehra, Zeenat Aman, Sanjeev Kumar (guest appearance), Om Shivpuri, Shreeram Lagoo etc. According to a user comment on the IMDB web site, the movie starts on an intriguing premise. It starts with Shreeram Lagoo committing suicide after learning that his newly-wed wife (Zeenat Aman) is actually his daughter. In the meanwhile, Vinod Mehra and Raj Babbar are searching for Vinod Mehra’s girlfriend who is Zeenat Aman. These two happen to meet Sanjeev Kumar who tells them the story of three friends, Shreeram Lagoo, Om Shivpuri and himself. This story is somehow connected to the disappearance of Zeenat Aman. Interesting? Does the story told so far sound fascinating? The movie is available on the ubiquitous YouTube for those who are interested. But let me warn, the user comment also mentions that the story is interesting only on paper. So please don’t blame if you waste time watching it.

(I have not watched this movie yet. But from some part of this movie that I watched I found that there is some twist and mystery angle in the story of this movie which is revealed at the end of this movie. For that we will have to watch this movie 🙂 ).

Today 30th September’2024 is one hundred and second birth anniversary of Hrishikesh Mukherjee (30.09.1922-27.08.2006). We all know him as a ‘master craftsman’ of movies like ‘Anaari’, ‘Anupama’, ‘Gaban’, ‘Aashirwaad’, ‘Satyakaam’, ‘Anand’, ‘Namak Haram’, ‘Baawarchi’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘ Arjun Pandit’, ‘Golmaal’, ‘Naram Garam’ etc. This movie came in 1988 and the next movie directed by him was released one decade later in 1998 which is ‘Jhoothh Bole Kawwaa Kaate’.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee has several awards during his career in Hindi Film Industry and he was also awarded with the highest award for Cinema that is the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ in 1999. As a tribute to him on his 102nd Birth Anniversary today I am presenting this second song from the movie ‘Naamumkin-1988’ on the blog.

This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Lyrics are by Anjaan. On screen this song is lip-synced by Vinod Mehra. Zeenat Aman is also visible in the picturisation of this song. This song is a nice song to listen to and it grows upon us as we listen to it a few times. However this song like the movie has ended up being forgotten.

Over to the song now …

(The audio of the song has three stanzas in it whereas the video consists of two stanzas only. It seems that the second stanza was edited out from the picturisation too. Lyrics noted below are as per the audio link of this song.)

Song-Bahot door ho ke bahot paas ho tum (Naamumkin)(1988) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

bahot door hoke
bahot paas ho tum
meree zindagee ee
meraa
ehsaas ho tum m m
bahot door hoke
bahot paas ho tum
meree zindagee ee
meraa
ehsaas ho tum

dhuaan
jab ho raahen
thhaamein meree baahen
zulfein bikhere ae
chaltee ho tum m m
kabhee
dil pe mere
ghiren jab andherey
dil mein shamaa see
jaltee ho tum
jo bujhke bujhe naa
wahee pyaas ho tum m m m
bahot door hoke
bahot paas ho tum
meree zindagee ee
meraa
ehsaas ho tum

yahaan
tum naheen to
kaheen
kuchh naheen hai
mere liye ae ho
sab kuchh tum hee ee ee
kaheen
ham kaheen hain
kaheen
tum kaheen ho
ik din milenge
hum tum kaheen
jo mar ke mitey ae naa aa
wahee aas ho tum m m m
bahot door hoke
bahot paas ho tum
meree zindagee ee
meraa
ehsaas ho tum

meree
dhadkanon mein
jaane
kya taraane
dheeme suron mein
gaatee ho tum m m
jaane
kis jahaan se
leke
kya sandesaa
saanson mein aatee
jaatee ho tum
mere dil kee dhadkan
meree saans ho tum m m m
bahot door ho ke
bahot paas ho tum
meree zindagee ee
meraa
ehsaas ho tum m m m
bahot door hoke
bahot paas ho tum
meree zindagee ee
meraa
ehsaas ho tum

thank you Avinashji for a post to remember Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

I think I have seen a part of this film on YouTube when Aparnaji had presented a song on the blog. Don’t recall whether I liked it or not, this film is so least-remembered 🙂
