“Naamumkin”(1988) was produced by Bidhu Jha (an NRI) and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This movie was a mystery movie, not a genre one associates Hrishikesh Mukherjee with.
The story line, as given in wikipedia is :
Shobha (Zeenat Aman) marries a Canada-based big wealthy businessman Ashok Saxena (Shreeram Lagoo) almost twice her age. On the wedding night, Ashok dies by falling out of his balcony.
Sunil Kapoor (Raj Babbar) and his associate get involved in an investigation due to the one million dollars insurance policy of Ashok. His death seems mysterious as the autopsy report mentioned heavy alcohol was consumed by Ashok, who was known to be a complete teetotaler.
Also, Sunil’s friend Shakti Kaul (Vinod Mehra) was earlier engaged to Shobha, so he flies down to Canada to meet Shobha.
Together they start an investigation to find out what caused the death of Ashok and what circumstances caused it.
This kind of storyline does not work in Hindi movies. “Suraag”(1980) was another movie (produced by another NRI) that had also received a lukewarm response at the box office.
“Naamumkin”(1988) had four songs in it (including a multiple version song). Three songs have been covered in the blog. Here are their details:-
| SNo in Blog | Song Title | Singer/s | Lyrics | Posted On | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10721 | Ae zindagi huyi kahaan bhool Multiple version song | Kishore Kumar / Anuradha Paudwal | Anjaan | 17 January 2015 | Post by Aparna H M . Song (both versions) plays in the background |
| 18529 | Bahot door ho ke bahot paas ho tum | Kishore Kumar | Anjaan | 30 September 2024 | Post by Avinash Scrapwala. Picturised on Vinod Mehra and Zeenat Aman |
The songs of the movie suffered as a result of the box office failure of the movie. With the benefit of hindsight, it appears that R D Burman had created some nice songs in this movie that did not receive the appreciation that he deserved. Though it must be said that some of these compositions were used earlier in Bangla songs. For example, the first song, “Ae zindagi hui kahaan bhool” was composed by R D Burman earlier as a Bangla song “kobe je kothay ki je holo bhool” in “Troyee”(1982). It was sung by Bhupinder Singh and it was picturised on Mithun Chakraborty.
Here is the fourth and final song from “Naamumkin”(1988) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman. The song is picturised on Zeenat Aman.
It is another potential gem of a song that failed to catch the attention of music lovers.
With this song, all the songs of “Naamumkin”(1988) have been covered in the movie. The movie this joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.
