In this article, I have taken up for discussion, one of the unreleased films, ‘Sameera’ (1982) which was initially titled ‘Wohi Baat’ when it went to floor for shooting in 1977. The film was jointly produced by Cinematographer, K K Mahajan and the Film Editor, Pran Mehra and was directed by debutant, Vinay Shukla. The main actors in the films were Shabana Azmi, Parikshit Sahni, Mithun Chakraborty and Amol Palekar.

I was interested in watching this film mainly because the story of the film was written by Kamleshwar which gave me a feeling that it may be ‘middle of the road’ film. The film was completed in 1981 under its new title ‘Sameera’ which was passed by the Censor Board on April 12, 1982. The film was released on the Indian Panorama section of International Film Festival of India held in New Delhi in January 1983. It is really unfortunate that the film is not available for viewing on any platforms. It is feared that the print of the film has deteriorated beyond redemption.

My few thoughts on the film were what the genesis of the film was (debutant producer and director factor), what was story of the film (Kamleshwar factor) and the reasons for delay in completion of the film. My searches on internet led me to an article written by Karan Bali which appeared on UPPERSTALL. The article has some rare information. I will give below the gist of the article.

The idea of directing a film for Vinay Shukla came on the sets of ‘Mukti’ (1977) when he was assisting director, Raj Tilak and the Cinematographer and Editor were K K Mahajan and Pran Mehra, respectively. Pran Mehra was impressed with Shukla’s work. He told Shukla that he would like to produce a film which he could direct. Encouraged by Pran Mehra, Shukla requested Kamleshwar to write a story for the film. Once the story was ready, K K Mahajan also joined Pran Mehra as co-producer and the cinematographer. Shooting of the film started in 1977 over a stretch of 29 days.

When the film’s shooting was completed, the title of the film was changed to ‘Sameera’, the name of the heroine of the film. At this stage, the film’s financier suggested to show the film to distributors to get some advance money which can finance the film’s post-production work before it is ready for release. However, director, Vinay Shukla and Co-producer and Cinematographer, K K Mahajan felt that it was better to complete the post-production work and then market the film as a finished product. In the tussle between financier and producer-director, the film’s work came to a halt. During this period, Pran Mehra, the co-producer died, complicating the matter further. The film was finally completed in 1981.

The film is about man-woman relationship. Sameera (Shabana Azmi) is married to ambitious civil engineer, Prashant ( Parikshit Sahni), who is transferred to a remote location where a dam is being constructed. While they are in love, Prashant gives his work the priority and keeps making frequent trips to Mumbai to pursue his promotion. In this process, he neglects Sameera.

During one of many trips of Prashant out of his work place, Sameera falls ill. She is looked after by Prashant’s deputy, Nakul (Mithun Chakraborty) and in the process they get involved with each other. Sameera and Prashant part ways and the now promoted Prashant leaves – literally handing over his job and home to Nakul. Nakul and Sameera get married. But her guilt over what happened earlier when Prashant was away, coupled with Nakul’s increased workload see a repeat (hence the original title, ‘Wohi Baat’) in Sameera’s life. This marriage too hits rocky waters when Prashant returns and helps the couple to resolve their issues and save their marriage.

The film’s four songs were released in 1977 under the original title of the film, ‘Wohi Baat’ on HMV’s LP No. LPE.8030. Initially, Sahir Ludhinavi was to write the songs, but he fell ill and Naqsh Lyallpuri was roped in. The songs were set to music by Jaidev. One song (two-version) has been covered on the Blog. Technically, I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘jaane naa doongi’ which is rendered by Asha Bhosle.

This is unusual song. The lyrics are mostly in free verses. The musical composition does not follow the set pattern of the usual filmy song. In the absence of the picturisation of the song, it is difficult to visualise as to what the background was which needed this type of unusual song composition, both in lyrical and musical terms. I can only make a guess on the basis of the story of the film that the song was picturised on Shabana Azmi. And three stanzas of the song represented her three different emotional expressions.

Hats off to lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri, music director Jaidev and to Asha Bhosle for this beautiful song to cherish.
