Blog Day :

5949 Post No. : 18592

Today 31 october 2024, is to my mind a very special day. It is the last day of the month. We all know about the first day of the month, described so well in the iconic Kishore Kumar song, Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954).

Like pahli taareek, last day of the month is also a very important day. It is on this day of the month that people who are in government service and who superannuate during the month retire from their service. During most months, the last day of the month is a working day. On some occasions, the last day of the month happens to be sunday. In that case those people retire on the last working day of the month.

31 october 2024 is a special last day. It falls on a weekday (thurday), still it is a holiday because Deepawali, the MOST important festival of India occured on this day this year ! So people retiring this month retired on the penultimate day of the month viz on 30th october 2024.

Imagine retiring one day before Deepawali. During previous Deepawali festivals, these people would be concentrating on celebrating the festival with colleagues and others. This time they would be worrying about their travel plans after the day of retirement. We all know how tough it is for people to travel during this festival. On trains you cannot get reservations. On planes you can, but you have to play five times the normal fare.

We are aware of the legend associated with the festival of deepawali. Lord Ram after winning the war in Lanka returned to Ayodhya. He was coming back to Ayodhya 14 years after he had given up his claim to throne. It was a day of celebration for the people of Ayodhya. So they celebrated in the best way possible during that time, viz by lighting deeps on their households. During that era, it must have been a day of great joy and celebration. Lighting so many diyas that day must have been an unheard of thing those days. rows upon rows of deep. It is from that the name of the festival “Deepawali” was derived. It became an annual event to be celebrated on the Amavasya of Kartik month.

With time, it has become a five day celebration sharting from dwadashi- called Dhanteras followed by trayodashi-called Kali Chaudas or Hamuman Pooja, then chaturdashi which is chhotee deepaawali, then Deepawali on amavasya. The next day pratipada is Govardhan pooja, dwitiy is bhai dooj. In some parts of the country, the festivities begin even earlier and/ or festivities continue even further. For example, in some part it starts from Ekadashi itself which is celebrated as govats dwadashi. In Bihar, chhath, celebrated six days after deepawali, is nearly as important a festival as deepawali.

This happens to be 15th Deepawali festival that we are celebrating in the blog since 2008. It must be considered a major achievement for a blog like this dealing with a non populist subject like old Hindi movie songs.

We have covered almost all the well known deepawali related songs during the last 14 years. Unlike previous years, where I would have lots of Deepawali related songs lined up for covering in the blog, this time I began my search for a deepawali song quite late in the day. When I thought I was drawing a blank, I came across this song which is a prayer to Goddess Laxmi. A suitable song for the occasion, becausee Deepawali had mainly become a Laxmi poojan festival now a days. People celebrate deepawali in the hope that they will be blessed by Goddess Laxmi.

This song is from “Bhagwaan Samaaye Sansaar Mein”(1976). It was produced by Babubhai N Shah and directed by Satish Kumar for Jayshree Enterprises, Bombay. The movie had Kanan Kaushal, Ashish Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Jeevan, B.M. Vyas, Satyadeep, Mohan Choti, Jayshree T., Lalita Kumari, Radheshyam, Chand Usmani, Anant Marathe, Tuntun, Sundar, Bhagwan Sinha, Moolchand, Ratna, Master Alankar, Baby Nilofar, Baby Rehana etc in it.

This movie was originally titled “Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan”. Records of the songs contained this name on the record label.

“Bhagwaan Samaaye Sansaar Mein”(1976) had six songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from the movie which is a Laxmi bhajan. It is sung by Anuradha Paudwal and it is picturised on Kanan Kaushal. B D Mishra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anil Arun.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, prsperous and safe Deepawali.
