The song under discussion is from “Sampoorna Devi Darshan”(1971). “Sampoorna Devi Darshan”(1971) was produced by S J Rajdev and directed by Shantilal Soni for ‘Sargam Chitra, Bombay’. The movie had Sushma, Ashish Kumar, B.M. Vyas, Padma Rani, Shabana, Uma Dutt, Azad, Shery Mohan, Arvind Pandya, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Shri Bhagwan, Bhagwan Sinha, Maya, Shobha, Suman, Prem Lata, Daya Devi, Rajeshwari Rao, Haroon, Prince Arjun, Kiran Kumar, Dalpat Bhai etc in it.

Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by R. Priyadarashi. Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu. Lyrics of this movie were written by B.D. Mishra and music was composed by S.N. Tripathi.

Lyrics of the song as well as details of the movie were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala, with the request that- “Kindly introduce the movie with your writeup please, as I am not good when it comes to writing about mythology. Please.

While making the above request, he assumed that I can write about mythology. In reality, I know even less about this topic. Whatever litle I knew about this topic was from my voracious reading of children’s magazines like Chandamama, and also reading of Geeta Press Gorakhpur religious publications during my younger days. I have already forgotten most of that.

I in fact, learnt something new from the email of Avinash Scrapwala. I realised that there is a Navratri during Durga puja of october November and also another navratri in the summer season. The summer season navratri is called Chaitra navratri and it marks the beginning of the Hindu calendar year.

Today marks the beginning of Hindu calendar year Samvat 2078. This is Vikram Samvat (Vikram calendar), which, we can see is 57 years ahead of Gregorian calendar (the one that is commonly followed by most people). However India adopted Shak Samwat (Shak Calendar) as Indian calendar which has the same months as Vikram calendar but it started in 78 AD, unlike Vikram Samwat which started in 57 BC. Official Shak calendar is tied to the Gregorian calendar. It begins on 22 march, and on Gregorian leap year it begins on 21 march.

Chaitra is the first month of Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar year. This year this day falls on 13 April. Chaitra navratri begins from this day. This time it is from 13 april to 22 april.

Like during the october-november Navratri, the chaitra navratri too is observed by praying to different avatars of Goddess Durga during the nine days of the festival. These avataras, that are worshipped on the nine days are:-from day one to day nine-Maa Shailputri, Maa Brahmcharini, Maa Chandraghanta,Maa Kushmaanda,Skandmata, Maa Katyayani, Maa Kaalraatri, Maa Mahagauri and Maa Sidhhidaatri.

The festival marks the beginning of the spring season and it ends with Ram Navami or the birthday of Lord Rama.

This new year day is celebrated in different parts of the country by different names viz. Gudi Padwa (Maharashra, MP,Chattisgarh), Ugadi (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka), Puthandu (Tamilnadu), Vishu (Kerala), Bihu (Assam), Poila Baisaakh (Bangal), Baisaakhi (Punjab) etc.

Just imagine for a second. All these regions of India, located far far away from each other, have been celebrating their new year on this same day for many centuries! It means that all these diverse places, separated by vast distances have been culturally integrated for many many centuries ago ! How else do you explain the fact that all these regions celebrate their new years on the same day ! I notice that I have stayed in almost all the above mentioned regions of India and I have observed this new year celebrated in almost all its different forms. 🙂

Religious minded people use this occasion for pooja, archana, aradhana etc, whereas cultural minded people celebrate it through songs and dances. Vigorous Punjabi dance on this occasion is well known to most people. Personally I am a big fan of Bihu dance that I saw getting performed on this occasion, during my stay in Assam two decades ago. These festivals also have much to offer to those who look forward to sweets and pakwaans. 🙂

As per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) this movie had six songs (including one five-part song). All the songs of this movie were written by B.D. Mishra and music was composed by S.N. Tripathi.

The list of the songs given in HFGK is as follows;

SNo Song Title Singer/s
01 Jai devi maata, jai nau durgaa maata Manna Dey, Chandrani Mukherji, chorus
02 Sansaar ki kaisi reet hai …sachchaayi roye duniya mein Asha Bhonsle
03 O raaja aa jaa na mere paas Asha Bhonsle
04 Aao suhaag ki raat manaa le… tumhaare sang jeenaa thha Asha Bhonsle
05 (a) Nij janm bhoomi dharti maa ko naman-part-1
(b) Hari bhari brajbhoomi seenchti sadaa
(c) Kaam krodh mad lobh moh kitnaa hi zor lagaaye
(d) Paap taap santaap jhoothh ki ek na chalegi
(e) Teerath teerath mandir mandir jo ghoome din raat
Manna Dey, Chandrani Mukherjee, chorus
06 Maa Paava gadh thhi ootaryaa mahaakaali re (garbaa)

When I first looked at the name of the movie and the lyrics of the song, and looked at the request of Avinash scrapwala regarding this being a song for the occasion, my first impression was, how can it be. It is a song fit for Durga puja. Then, on doing some research, that I have presented above, I found out that there is something known as Chaitra Navratri and that it is a festival like the Navratri of Dashara, and that this song is actually tailormade for the occasion. Now I have realised that the world “Nav Durga” that we often come across is not “nav Durga” but “nau Durga” viz. “nine Durga”, and it refers to the nine forms of Durga.

The song plays in the background at the credits appear on the screen. The lyrics of this song mentions all the nine forms of Durga.

This shows that the makers of movies like this were very well versed with Indian mythology and they could make movies on such topics. The lyricists of the songs of such movies had indepth knowledge about the subject as we can see from the lyrics of this song, which comes from the pen of B D Mishra. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

With this song, “Sampoorna Devi Darshan”(1971) makes its debut in the blog. 1971 saw 115 movies getting released. This movie is the 106th movie of 1971 to find representation in the blog.

We this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year and chaitr navraatr.

Let us now listen to song devoted to Maa Durga, the Goddess who is worshipped during this Chaitr Navraatr.

“Brahmaa Vishnu Mahesh-1971” was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Nitin Pictures, Bombay’.

It was a ‘mythological’ movie. It had Mahipal, Uma, Trilok Kapoor, Sulochana, Raj Kumar, Sulochana Chatterjee, Anant Tiwari, Dulari, Manhar Desai, Padmarani, B.M. Vyas, Madhumati, Kavita, Neelam, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Shefali, Suryankant Shukla, Bhagwat, Vishwas, Radheshyam, Lakhani, Murari, Master Rajesh, Bakul, Soni, Habib, Mahesh Bhatt, Jeewan in the role of Naradmuni and many others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1971.

This movie had seven songs written by Indeevar (three songs) and Bhagwat Dutt Mishra (four songs).
Music for this movie was composed by S.N. Tripathi.

As per HFGK Vol-V following is the list of songs of this movie;

S.No. Song Title Lyricist Singer/s
01 Saare jag ka ek hai Ishwar … B.D. Mishra Manna Dey, chorus
02 Swami tumhi ho, sakha … ho ke

04 Pag mere doley re paayal chhanke
05 Saare sukh chhode pati ko na chhode B.D. Mishra Manna Dey

07 Aaj meri hai parikshaa laaj rakh le B.D. Mishra Suman Kalyanpur

*(HFGK mentions the lyricists name against the four songs as given above, so I guess that the other three songs are written by Indeevar).

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi. I am unable to identify the actor lip-syncing this song.
Music is composed by S.N. Tripathi and lyrics are by Bhagwat Dutt Mishra.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

With this movie ‘Brahmaa Vishnu Mahesh-1971’ makes its debut on the blog and we add one more missing movie of the year ‘1971’ to the blog.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with C Ramchandra after a gap of two years. The movie “Stree”(1961) turned out to be their last movie together. Shankar Jaikishan became the top music directors who worked with Lata (with 278 songs) overtaking C Ramchandra (268). Other top music directors were Chitragupta (136), Anil Biswas (116), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), Roshan (104), Madan Mohan (103, Naushad (96), Vasant Desai (89) composed 1298 songs out of 2369 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1961. The top six lyricists till end of 1961 for Lata Mangeshkar ere Rajinder Krishan (392), Shailendra (277), Hasrat Jaipuri (182), Bharat Vyas (150) Prem Dhawan (146) Shakeel Badayuni (136). These six lyricists had penned 1268 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

Lata Mangeshkar tied up with music directors Dilip Dholakiya , P Nageshar Rao and R D Burman for the first time in movies released during 1961. No new lyricist worked for the first time ith her in movies released in 1961.

Here is the summary of Lata Mangeshkar’s playback career in Hindi movies till end of 1961 :

As can be seen from the table of 1961, Lata Mangeshkar sang 152 songs in movies released in 1961. As many as 125 of these songs have been covered in the blog. Out of 44 movies of 1960 where Lata Mangeshkar sang, all Lata Mangeshkar songs of 30 movies are alreday covered. So we have to look at the remaining 14 movies to find Lata Mangesahkar songs of 1961 to discuss in the blog.

Alphabetically the first such movie that offers us such Lata Mangeshkar songs to discuss is “Amrit Manthan”(1961). This mythological movie was and directed by S N Tripathi for Agraal Productions, Bombay. The movie had Usha Kiran, Manhar Desai, Ulhas, Sundar, Sulochana Chatterjee, Dalpat Kaka, Ratnmala, Premlata, Amirbai Karnataki, Radheshyam, Babu Raje, H N Kalla, Dev Chand, Moti Vijay, Moolchand, Baijnath, Habeeb, Yashodhara Katju, Uma Dutt, Jeeankala, Roopmal etc in it.

The movie had ten songs in it. It appears that records were made only for four songs. Names of singers are known only for these four songs of the movie. In absence of records of the other movie, we have no idea about the singers of those ten songs. Based on the details of four songs, we know that one of these songs is a Lata solo.

Here is the song from “Amrit Manthan”(1961). The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. B D Mishra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi. The mukhda of the song “raat dhalne lagi” is similar to the well known song, Aa aa bhi jaa raat dhhalne lagi from “Teesri Kasam”(1966), also sung by Lata Mangeshkar. But this “Amrit Manthan “(1961) song came five years before the “Teesri Kasam”(1966) song. These to songs are different.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knoledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

ke tumse bichhad ke ae

Dancing has been an integral part of Indian cinema even during the era of silent films. In most of the silent films, dancing was mostly confined to courtesans which the society saw it in a negative way. It was only after sound films came in 1931, the film makers started looking for actors who could also sing and dance. So, multi-tasking was the buzz word for the main actors during the early period of sound films. Some actors like Mumtaz Ali, Sunita Devi, Shahzaadi etc were known for their dancing skills though they also acted in supporting roles. Even some lead actors like Molina Devi of New Theatres (remember her dance in ‘Kaarwaan-e-Hayat’, 1935), Radha Rani of Bombay, Mumtaz Shanti and even Leela Chitnis in the film ‘Kanchan’ (1941) were required to dance as part of their roles. By the start of 1940, Sadhana Bose from Bengal joined Hindi films as a classical dancer in the lead/supporting roles.

A few trained dancers like Sitara Devi and Auzurie joined the Hindi film industry by the middle of 1930s. While Sitara Devi was trained both in Hindustani classical and western dances, Auzurie was trained in folk and western dances. Unfortunately, many of their films of 1930s with dances are not available for viewing. While Sitara Devi graduated to heroine and side heroine’s roles in the 1940s, Auzurie continued to work in the films mainly as a dancer.

The success of Sitara Devi and Auzurie in Hindi films seems to have prompted the film makers to have dance song numbers in most of the Hindi films in mid-40s onward. This gave the more scope for trained dancers to join Hindi films. One of the prominent dancers to join Hindi films was Cuckoo in mid-40s. She set a trend in Hindi films by her dance numbers to have at least one dance sequence in most of the Hindi films in the second half of the 1940s and thereafter. The important of her dance numbers in Hindi films can be gauged by the fact that during 1944-50, she danced in as many as 74 films.

With Cuckoo’s popularity as a dancer, some more prominent dancers joined Hindi films like Kumkum in 1947, Mohana Cabral in 1948, Roopmala in 1949, Sheila Vaz, Helen and Padmini, all in 1951. By the middle of 1950s, Hindi film makers had a good number of dancers to choose. One of the dancers who joined Hindi films in the second half of 1950s was Minu Mumtaz. Based on the book, ‘Mehmood – A Man of Many Moods’ (2005) by Hanif Zaveri and ‘The Incredibly Beautiful Minoo Mumtaz’ in YouTube Channel, ‘Tabassum Talkies’, I have attempted a short write-up covering the life story of Minu Mumtaz below:

Minu Mumtaz (real name: Malikunnisa Ali) was born on April 26, 1942 in Mumbai. She was one of the eight siblings of Mumtaz Ali, the popular dancer, singer and supporting actor of the Bombay Talkies in the 1930s and 40s. Mehmood, the comedian was her elder brother and the actor Anwar Ali was her youngest brother.

The family which was enjoying from the money and fame of Mumtaz Ali in the 40s, drifted to poverty due to his excessive drinking. He lost all money, houses, cars and even household items just to satisfy his addiction to drinking. With this, the responsibility of looking after a large family fell on Mehmood, being the eldest son. But he was not getting enough money from his odd jobs to look after a large family. It was Minu Mumtaz who thought of working in the films. She had learnt dance from her father and used to perform dances in her father’s dance troupe, ‘Mumtaz Ali Nites’. But her mother was against any one working in the films as she felt that it was the films which made her husband, Mumtaz Ali the victim of drinking habit.

But the financial condition in the family had become extremely precarious. A time came when it was difficult to manage even two-time meals. One day Minu Mumtaz along with her elder sister, Khairunnisa met Nanubhai Vakil for work in his film who was directing ‘Sakhi Hatim’ (1955. When he came to know that she was the daughter of Mumtaz Ali, he gave her a small role in the film. This was the beginning of her filmy career. She got more films with her dance numbers. With her song in ‘CID’ (1956), she got recognition as a good dancer. Thereafter, there was no looking back for Minu Mumtaz as she got many films, enhancing her status from a dancer to character actors, side roles with the heroines and in a few films even as a heroine.

During the shooting of her film ‘Bandhan’ (1956), Meena Kumari, who had become the sister-in-law of Mehmood, having married her younger sister, Madhu in 1952, gave Malikannisa the screen name ‘Meenu’ to rhyme with Meena. Because of the efforts of Minu Mumtaz, the family got to live in a comfortable position. Mehmood used to say that Minu Mumtaz is not her younger sister but she is like an elder brother to him. Of course, after his box office hit film, ‘Chhoti Bahen’ (1959), Mehmood’s luck also turned for the better in his filmy career to become a star comedian and later the producer and the director.

Minu Mumtaz married S. A. Akbar in 1963 who had directed Mehmood’s ‘Chhote Nawab’ (1961). The family first shifted to Kuwait and thereafter moved to Canada where she resides now.

I have gone through Minu Mumtaz’s filmography as well as songs picturised on her which throws some interesting information. During her active years of filmy career, Minu Mumtaz worked in around 75+ films. Almost equal numbers of songs have been picturised on her. In some films, she had more than one song to her credit. She was in the lead roles in ‘Black Cat’ (1959) and ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Baat’ (1959).

Johny Walker was like a member of the entire Mumtaz Ali family and he was consulted on important family matters. The marriage of Mehmood with Madhu was decided fixed in Johny Walker’s house. I feel that Johny Walker has been instrumental in pushing up her filmy career at least in the initial stages. This is borne out by the fact that Minu Mumtaz worked with Johny Walker in as many as 23 films of which in most of these films, she paired with him. Her brother, Mehmood had worked with her in 14 films of which 9 films pertain to the years when Mehmood had not firmly established in Hindi film industry.

As I said earlier, around 75 songs have been picturised on Minu Mumtaz. Our Blog has covered as many as 69 songs. I have given below links of a few of her popular songs for ready reference:

main hoon Johny badaa toofaani – ‘Maai Baap’ (1957)

boojh mera kya naam re – ‘C.I.D.’ (1956)

aji chale aao aji chale aao – ‘Halaaku’ (1956)

meri jaan meri jaan pyaar kisi se – ‘Yahudi’ (1958)

sitaare raah takte hain – ‘Black Cat’ (1959)

jaanu jaanu re chhupke kaun aaya – ‘Insaan Jaag Utha’ (1959)

saaqiyaa aaj mujhe neend nahin aayegi – ‘Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam’ (1962)

thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao – ‘Akeli Mat Jaiyyo’ (1963)

On the basis of the listing of Minu Mumtaz songs on the Blog as well as the video clips of her songs available on the video sharing platforms, I have been able to identify six songs picturised on Minu Mumtaz for which video clips are available and are yet to be covered in the Blog. I present one of those six songs from the film ‘Jagga Daaku’ (1959). The song is ‘teri kasam tujhko sanam pyaar kiya re’ sung by Geeta Dutt. Obviously, the song is picurised as a dance by Minu Mumtaz. Jairaj is present in the entire duration of the song. The song is written by B D Mishra which is set to music by S N Tripathi.

Unfortunately, the picture as well as audio qualities of the song on video clip are not good. At two places, there are breaks in the song. So, I have based the lyrics on the audio clip which has a better-quality audio.

As happened with me when I heard the song, I am sure that most of the senior visitors to the Blog would recall that they had heard this song long back but did not relate to the film.

This is the second song to appear in the Blog out of 6 songs in ‘Jagga Daaku’ (1959).

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Jab tak ye duniya rahegi (Durga Pooja)(1954) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-B D Mishra, MD-S N Tripathi

Lyrics

jab tak ye duniya rahegi ee
haaye teri kahaani kahegi
jab tak ye duniya rahegi ee
haaye teri kahaani kahegi

kahenge sabhi thhi kabhi ek raani
dharam ki nishaani
mita di pati ke liye zindgaani
charnon pe tere jhukegi
ye duniya teri kahaani kahegi
jab tak ye duniya rahegi ee
haaye teri kahaani kahegi

bhula kar chali chaand sa laal pyaara
nainon ka taara
chali tod maaya ka janjaal saara
kanchan si kaaya jalegi
ye duniya teri kahaani kahegi
jab tak ye duniya rahegi ee
haaye teri kahaani kahegi

o bhaarat ki naari
ari o suhaagin
piya ki pujaarin
hua dhany hai tere balidaan ka din
hua dhany hai tere balidaan ka din
mar mar ke bhi tu jiyegi
ye duniya teri kahaani kahegi
jab tak ye duniya rahegi ee
haaye teri kahaani kahegi
ye duniya teri kahaani kahegi

Blog Day :

“Hare Krishna”(1974) was directed by K Kameshwar rao for Mukesh Enterprises, Madras. This movie which wsas a mythological movie. had Hema Malini, Jaylalitha, N T Ram Rao, Jamuna, Devika, Rama Prabha, Kanta Rao, S V Ranga Rao, Nag Bhushanam, Rukmini, Satyabhama etc in it.

From the star cast, it appears that the movie was dubbed from a South indian movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the movie. The star cast is very interesting of course as it contains two actors who became Chief Ministers of two south Indian states.

This movie had five songs in it. Here is the first song from “Hare Krishna”(1974) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Rafi. B D Mishra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

Only the audio of this Radha- Krishna song is available. I reuest our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song. My guess is that this song was picturised on Hema Malini and N T Rama Rao. But I could be wrong.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

With this song. Hare Krishna”(1974) makes its debut in the blog.
