Today (4 november 2021) is the Deepaawali, the festival of lights.

Believe it or not, this happens to be the 14th deepaawali for the blog ! To last this long as a blog is quite an achievement.

During the occasions of previous deepaawalis, we have discussed as many as 37 deepaawali songs. All popular Deepaawali songs, including iconic songs have been covered in the past.

When I checked up the past Deepaawali articles, I realised that I had covered many interesting topics while discussing deepaawali. One of those topics was air quality or lack thereof. It is considered a topical subject because whenever Deepaawali arrives, messages spring up in Indian social media telling us that firecrrackers that we burst during deepaawali pollutes the environment.

Of late, there have been some studies that have pointed out that pollution in India is not because of Deepaawali, which lasts for just one day but because of other reasons, that take place over longer durations.

The real cause for pollution in India is like this- 51% of air pollution is due to industrial activities, 27 % due to vehicles, 17% due to crop burning and only 5% due to fireworks.

There is this 80-20 principle, or Pareto principle which states that 20 percent activities give 80 percent of the results. So, we need to take care of these 80 % results and address the 20 percent activities that are causing them. So, if we in India are serious about improving air pollution, then we have to address the major contributors namely industrial activities, vehicle pollution and crop burning. Singling out Deepaawali, when 95 % of pollution is contribued by other activitites is hypocrisy and dishonesty on the part of these activists with selective agenda.

These activists would want us to believe that Indian cities are the most polluted and India is the most polluted country, because it is the only major country that celebrates Deepaawali.

I visited a site (iqair.com) that displays Air Quality index for major cities as well as nations. What I found in that site was quite revealing.

According to it, the top 15 most polluted cities of the world (at 8 AM on 4 november 2021) are :

In the top 15 major cities, three Indian cities and one Nepali city figure. Other cities do not celebrate Deepaawali.

When I looked at the list of the most polluted countries in the world, I found that India is third in the list. The first two countries above India are our neighbours and they do not celebrate Deepaawali at all.

So one can see that countries that do not celebrate deepaawali in their lands are even more polluted than India, the country that celebrates deepaawali. So the people who preach India about celebrating deepaawali should train their guns elsewhere if they are actually environment conscious.

It also shows that the reasons for pollutions lie elsewhere. It is indiscipline and third worldly lack of environmental awareness that is the major cause of pollution in these countries. Some of these countries claim to be progressing on the basis of vague figures of GDP per capita or Human development index, but when one looks closely, it turns out that these countries are plucking low hanging fruits, while disregarding pollution laws, minimum wages laws, safety laws etc.

If one wants to have an idea of the development of a country, the best way to gauge its development is its Air Quality Index(AQI). If one looks at the above tables, one finds that all the top polluting countries and cities are third world countries and their cities. Countries that are developed do not figure at the top. Even advanced nations neighbouring third world nations have good AQI while their neighbouring third world countries have poor AQI figures. Some examples of such advanced economies surrounded by third world economies are Israel and Singapore.

So unless a country addresses its environment and cleans up its air, it will not become a developed nation. India is definitely not going to become a developed nation any time soon, seeing its AQI. Same is true for China as well. Their GDP figures may look impressive, but it is gradually coming out that much of their GDP figures may be manipulated and fake. When one looks at AQI index of China, we find that China does figure among the top polluting nations, so it means that China is developing by disregarding enviroment. Sooner or later nature will get back at China. We can already see signs of that happening.

India needs to address its pollution problems, but for that, we first need to identify the real causes of pollution, instead of getting influenced by people with agendas.

I have also discussed in the past that Deepaawali, where Goddess Laxmi is worshipped, is best celebrated if we worship Goddess Saraswati first. Worshipping Goddess Saraswati means getting educated, learning skills, upgrading our skills and becoming productive. Then we need to make use of our skills by producing goods and services, which is basically worshipping Lord Vishwkarma. When our goods and services get bought by consumers then we get money in return, or in other words, we are blessed by Goddess Laxmi.

Advanced nations, that figure low down in the list of polluting countries, follow the correct procedure of worshipping Goddess Laxmi. Much of their effort is on research and development (worshipping Goddess Saraswati) and then manufacturing goods or providing services ( worshipping Lord Vishwakarma). They do not consciously worship Goddess Laxmi, but Goddess Laxmi blesses them much more than she blesses Indians who seek to worship her just on the day of deepaawali, without first investing in worshipping Goddess Saraswati and Lord Vishwakarma.

So, I always try to tell my fellow Indians (who care to listen) that we are not worshipping Goddess Laxmi the right way. We need to worship her the way advanced Western countries worship her. Symbolic worship on one particular day will not do. Our worship should be round the clock throughout the year, and it should be to keep upgrading ourselves and keep giving goods and services that are in demand worldwide.

The festival of deepaawali, as it is celebrated in India, is easily the most important festival for Indian economy. Now that the effects of Covid 19 virus on India are receding, this deepaawali festival is likely to give a big boost to Indian economy, which is looking up after a forgettable year. I hope that the worst is over for India as well as the rest of the world.

On this occasion, I discuss a song from “Jai Mahalaxmi Maa”(1976). This movie was directed by Vijay Sharma for Pearl Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Ashish Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Anita Guha, Chaand Usmani, Sapru, Sujata, B M Vyas, S N tripathi, Renu, Sundar, Bharhchaari, Dilip Dutt, Neelam, Sheikh, Anant Marathe, Helen, Dalda, Hari Shukla, Narmada Shankar , Habeeb etc. The movie also had special appearances by Jagdeep, Mahipal and Jeewan.

“Jai Mahalaxmi Maa”(1976) had five songs in it.

Here is the first song from the movie. This son, the theme song of the movie, is sung by Usha Mangeshkar and chorus. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

The song is picturised on Kanan Kaushal and others.

With this song, “Jai Mahalaxmi Maa”(1976) makes its debut in the blog.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and safe deepaawali. Let us give our best (my way of worshipping Goddess Saraswati) and I am sure she will shower her wishes on us in abundant measure.

“Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975) was one of two movies that were released on 15 August 1975. “Sholay”(movie 1975) was the other movie. In the earlier weeks, “Sholay”(1975) was receiving lukewarm response from audience, and their makers were very nervous. After a few days of anxiety, the crowd suddenly began to rust into the movie halls screening “Sholay”(1975), much to the relief of their makers.

On the other hand, “Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975) began to attract house full audiences from the very first day. Unlike Sholay(1975) it was a low budget movie and it began to show profits as soon as it became clear that the movie would not be taken off after one week but would go on and on. There were many places where this movie ran longer than Sholay. In Ranchi, Sholay ran for 14 weeks whereas Jai Santoshi Ma ran far longer.

The music of “Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975) became very popular. By now the songs of this movie have become a part of many Indian househlds. This movie is the highlight in the careers of Usha Mangeshkar (as a playback singer) and C Arjun (as a music director). Kavi Pradeep, a lyricist extraordinaire of religious and patriotic songs, got to pen the kind of lyrics he so enjoyed.

“Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975) had six songs, including one multiple version song. All songs have gone on to become all time hit songs.

Welcome all to the eighth article in this series. Today’s voice is Usha Mangeshkar.
Today’s voice needs no introduction as all of us like minded people are aware about her family members and how she joined her elder sisters in singing for movies.
We are also aware of how she has carved a niche for herself among the many singers who ruled the hearts of millions of cine goers and HFM lovers in all these years.

A detailed write-up about Usha Mangeshkar has already been done by our inhouse encyclopedia Shri Arun ji in his post here.

I am reproducing the following text from his write-up (with his due permission) here.

Born on the 15th of December 1935, at Sangli, Usha is the 4th and the youngest sister of Mangeshkars. The line-up is very regular-exactly 2 year’s difference in the ages of the siblings-
Lata born in 1929
Meena born in 1931
Asha born in 1933
Usha born in 1935
Hridaynath born in 1937.

When master Deenanath died in 1942, Lata, all of 13 years, had to act and sing in films to earn money for the family. Meena, not so keen on singing chose to stay at home and look after the Mother and young Usha and Hridaynath. Asha joined her sister in acting, singing and earning money for the family. Usha was just 7-year-old, so she too remained at home. Besides singing, she was interested in Painting, so she took lessons from the famous painter of those days, M.R. Achrekar. In addition, she also continued learning Music from Pt. Tulsidas Sharma, K. Mahavir and Sushant Maharaj.

When Asha left suddenly and went away-in 1948- with Ganpatrao Bhonsle, twice her age, the family got a terrible jolt. The financial responsibility now fell only on Lata Mangeshkar. At the age of 19 years, Usha decided to start earning herself by singing in films and C. Ramchandra gave her the break with a song” Bhabhi aayee” from ‘Subah ka Tara’-1954. Her very first song became so popular that she was flooded with children’s song offers. Her next popular song was ‘Aplam chaplam’ from Azaad, also by C. Ramchandra.

Usha Mangeshkar’s voice was thereafter used for many children songs. For me, the oldest memory of her children song is the song from ‘Waapas-1969’ which I have presented on the blog and the song is ‘jhunjhuna jhunjhuna’.

Thereafter as I get involved more with Bollywood songs, I became aware of many of her earlier songs. Like when I came into the contact with this blog, and became a Sahir fan, I got to listened her duet song with Asha Bhonsle from the ‘1955’ movie ‘Devdas’ i.e., ‘o albele panchhi tera door thhikaana hai’.

She also got to sing many duet songs with her sister and other female singers in HFM. Many of such duets have been popular and are favorites of music lovers.

And then come the most important period of her singing careers which the ‘decade of seventies 1971-1980’.

During these years, her voice not only featured in many songs but her many songs become popular too. It will not be inappropriate to say that her singing career was at its ‘peak’ during the years of ‘seventies’. That was for Hindi as well as Marathi movies.

For Marathi movies her voice was there in every Dada Kondke movie which became ‘Jubilee Hits’. I remember many songs from such movies that were frequently played on loudspeakers everywhere during festivals and other programs.
Also, the songs from the movie ‘Pinjara-1972’ went on to became huge hits with her voice appearing in six of the nine songs in this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Ram Kadam.

In 1975 came the movie ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ which was big hit and so were its songs. Usha Mangeshkar’s voice featured in three of the seven songs in this movie. All the three songs sung by her were popular among the masses. Music for this movie was composed by C. Arjun. The song ‘Main to aarti utaaroon re Santoshi Maata ki’ became hugely popular and it remained her all time big hit and highlight of her Hindi movie singing career.

In 1977 came the movie ‘Inkaar’ and its song ‘mungdaa mungdaa main gud ki dali’ was a runaway hit and it was also the favorite of almost each orchestra programs happening then.

I would also like to mention few of her songs here which I like very much.

‘Sainaath tere hazaaron haath’ from ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba-1977’,

‘ye jeena hai angoor ka daanaa’ from the movie ‘Khatta Meethha-1977’,

‘mujhe pyaar ka tohfaa de ke’ from the movie ‘Kaalaa Patthar-1979’, which was not included in the movie,
‘sultaanaa sultaanaa mera naam hai sultaanaa’ from the movie ‘Taraanaa-1979’,
And in the later years songs like ‘goron ki naa kaalon ki’, the unforgettable ‘shaam rangeen huyi hai tere aanchal ki tarah’ … There might be other notable songs too which I might be missing here.

And that is the reason that Usha Mangeshkar, because of the many songs of her in the seventies, and many nostalgic moments for us, people like me, who were growing in the seventies, is the voice in this series.

And I must mention here the today’s song which is the very special song for me, as it still has the same effect on me, whenever I listen to it or watch it on the video or other video media.
When I was noting it down for this post and watching it I still get the goose-pimples, because of the singing of this song, the overall composition and the picturization of this song, that is embedded in my mind since my childhood. Specially the landing of Santoshi Maa in the ‘mrityu-lok’ from the ‘swarg-lok’ 😊

So, even if Usha Mangeshkar had sung only this song, she would still have the voice for me in this series for the nostalgia associated with this song for me.

This song is from the 1975 movie ‘Jai Santosh Maa’. Lyrics are by Kavi Pradeep and music is composed by C. Arjun.

On screen this song is lip synced by Kanan Kaushal and many others with Anita Guha as Santoshi Maa can be seen in the picturization of this song.

“Jai Santoshi Maa” was produced by Satram Rohra for ‘Bhagyalakshmi Chitra Mandir, Bombay’ and directed by Vijay Sharma. It had Ashish Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Rajnibala, Bela Bose, Asha Potdar, Leela Mishra, Manhar Desai, B.M. Vyas, Rajan Haksar, Kundan, Neelam, Padmarani, Lata Arora, Johny Whisky, Surendra Mishra, Dilip Dutt, Uma Dutt, Tiwari, Dubey Trilok Kapoor, Anand Marathe, Shri Bhagwan, Mahipal, and Anita Guha as ‘Santoshi Maa’. Bharat Bhushan makes a ‘guest appearance’ in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.05.1975 and that is exactly the same day forty-six years back. I checked, it was Wednesday on this date and may be the movie was released the coming Friday after that. (Knowledgeable readers can throw more light on this).

(Editor’s note- The movie was released on 15 August 1975, which was a friday-and India’s independence day. Another movie called “Sholay”(1975) was also released on the same day.)

15 August 1975 saw the release of a movie that went on to become an all time surprise hit. No, I am not talking about “Sholay”(1975) which was released on that date. “Sholay”(1975) was a big budget multistarrer movie and it was expected to do well at the box office, at least by the makers of the movie, if not the trade pundits.

Another movie was released on 15 august 1975. It was a low key release in a few movie halls. This movie was expected to do a modest business and was expected to last just one or two weeks in movie halls before being replaced by other movies.

But surprisingly, this movie, which had no big stars, and which was a religious movie (that was considered infra dig by city bred movie goers) began to draw crowds that was comparable to the crowd thronging to watch “Sholay”(1975).

Seeing that this movie was made on a shoe strong budget, this movie turned out to be one of the most profitable movie ever for its makers. People would offer prayer in the movie hall and perform aarti. This goddess, which few people were aware of, suddenly found a pride of place among the pantheon of Gods.

This movie, a surprise all time super duper hit, was produced by Satram Rohara and directed by Vijay Sharma for Bhagyalaxmi Chitra Mandir, Bombay had Kanan Kaushal, Ashish Kumar, Anita Guha (playing the title role), Bharat Bhushan, Rajani Bala, Bela Bose, B. M. Vyas, Rajan Haksar, Manohar Desai, Dilip Dutta, Mahipal, Padmarani, Leela Mishra, Sushila Devi etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. The movie makers had roped in C Arjun ( largely a music director of B grade movies) as the music director. Kavi Pradeep, a top lyricist of 1940s and 1950s, but more or less out of work by that time, was signed up as the lyricist. He was an inspired choice as the lyricist, seeing that penning religious songs and patriotic songs was his strong suit.

All the songs of “Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975) became hugely popular and they remain so. Kavi Pradeep, in addition to penning the lyrics, also sung two songs in the movie in his characteristic style and these songs became all time classics.

Today (11 December 2020) is the 22nd remembrance day of Kavi Pradeep(6 February 1915 – 11 December 1998). On this occasion, here is a song from “Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975). This song is sung by Usha Mangeshkar who found herself in the role of leading female playback singer in the movie, which was rare for her, as she normally got one song in most movies, for some side actors.

This song happens to be the 200th song of Usha Mangeshkar as a playback singer in the blog. It is quite a befitting song to mark her double century in the blog.

This song, a prayer to Santoshi Maa, is lip synced by Kanan Kaushal. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the other actors seen in the picturisation of this song.

Kidar Sharma has often been given a title of ‘one-man film industry’. He was producer, director, actor, story/screen-play/dialogue writer, lyricist, editor, still photographer etc. He was also known to have the working knowledge of Hindustani classical music. He also sang a song on himself in the film ‘Inquilaab’ (1935). With a vast knowledge gained from working in New Theatres, Kolkata during 1933-41 and in Ranjit Movietone during 1942-47, Kidar Sharma had directed 11 films and written lyrics for 23 films before he turned producer with ‘Neel Kamal’ (1947).

Kidar Sharma had a passion for film making. Otherwise why a young man of 22 years after completing M.A. in English literature would join the New Theatres (NT) as a painter. He would have very well got the job of a lecturer in any college in around his native Punjab. His progress in filmy career was rapid. Within 2 years of joining NT, he was a still photographer and the lyricist for ‘Devdas’ (1935). he became dialogue writer for the Hindi version of ‘Vidyapati’ (1937) in addition to song writing. By 1939, Kidar Sharma had become a free-lance director with ‘Aulaad’ (1939’, his debut film as a director followed by ‘Chitralekha’ (1941) which became much talked about film. Incidentally, after about 23 years, Nadiadwala of Pushpa Films engaged Kidar Sharma to direct ‘Chitralekha’ (1964), a remake of its 1941 version.

After directing 9 films for Ranjit Movietone, Kidar Sharma decided to produce and direct ‘Neel Kamal’ (1947) under his own banner, Oriental Pictures. In fact, nobody was prepared to produce this film, not even his employer, Ranjit Movietone. So, he was forced to become the producer. He arranged finances by selling the distribution rights of the film in advance. For his maiden venture, he introduced two new comers – Raj Kapoor and Madhubala. Both the actors had done some bit roles in films before they were given the lead roles for the first time in the film. The film was an average success in terms of box office collections. Since then, Kidar Sharma has produced and directed 14 films between 1947 and 1980.

As a producer-director, Kidar Sharma was not a showman like Raj Kapoor for whom the production value in terms of star cast, techniques and costly sets for film shooting were as important as the theme of the film. On the other hand, Kidar Sharma was an antithesis of a showman. He believed in low budget film which ruled out taking star actors for the lead roles. Hence, for almost all his films which he produced and directed, he preferred new comers and his protégées to whom he had earlier introduced in his films. In this process, he gave to the Hindi film industry, popular actors like Raj Kapoor, Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Bharat Bhushan, Mala Sinha, Tanuja etc to whom he introduced in his films as lead actors for the first time. Similarly, he mostly relied on Snehal Bhatkar and Roshan as music directors for his films who were introduced by him in his films ‘Neel Kamal’ (1947) and ‘Sohag Raat’ (1948), respectively for the first time.

Kidar Sharma’s last box office successful film as a producer-director was ‘Baawre Nain’ (1950) with Raj Kapoor and Geeta Bali in the lead roles. All his subsequent films like ‘Shokhiyaan’ (1951), ‘Gunaah’ (1953), ‘Chhora Chhori’ (1954) and Rangeen Raaten’ (1956), did not fare well at the box office. All his films in the 1960s and thereafter numbering 6 either failed miserably at the box office or did not get released. I guess, ‘Sehme Huye Sitaare’ (1994) was his last film which remained unreleased in the theatres.

I have watched selectively a few films of Kidar Sharma from 1940s to 1960s. In most of his films, the story is based on a village or a small town and he tries to depict the intricate human relationships. All his films gives an impression that he had not come out of the Bengali mode of film making which were losing stream in Hindi film industry in the later 1960s where films were seen more as a medium of entertainment to fill the coppers of producers and distributors in terms of profits than covering the social issues concerning the society at large. Kidar Sharma did not fit in this milieu. So, the last 5-6 films produced and directed by him became obscure to such an extent that most of the us do not even remember the title of the films.

‘Pyaase Nain’ (1989) was one of the obscure films produced and directed by Kidar Sharma. The star cast included Kanan Kaushal, Yuvraj, Madhup Sharma, Naaz, Anant Marathe, Gauri Varma, Veena Sood with Shyama, Dev Kumar Gajanan Jagirdar, Hiralal and Maruti as guest artists. The film had 6 songs (including one song re-used from ‘Chhora Chhori’ (1954). Kidar Sharma wrote the lyrics which were set to music by Snehal Bhatkar.

The film was certified by the Censor Board on December 5, 1989. I am not aware whether the film was released in the theatres. I also do not find the gramophone/CD version the songs. Fortunately, the VCD of the film is available on one of the video sharing platforms. After watching the initial part of the film, I lost interest in watching the rest of the film. However, I have watched the picturisation of 3 songs in the film. My take on this film is as under:

1. Kanan Kaushal in 1989 was 50. But in this film, she looks much younger. Incidentally, Kanan Kaushal made her debut in Hindi film in 1969.when she was 30.

2. Of the 6 songs, one song is rendered by Mohammed Rafi with Suman Kalyanpur. The voice of Rafi sounds like his voice of the 60s. There is another duet in which Rajkumari Dubey sings for Kanan Kaushal. There are two songs by ghazal singer, Mahesh Chandra who had also sung in ‘Maikhaana’ (1967) for Kidar Sharma.

3. The treatment in the film in terms of cinematography, costumes and dialogues give an impression that this film was shot in the 60s through early 70s.

My own hunch is that the film was majorly shot between 1970 and 1975. Kanan Kaushal had become a well sought-after actress for mythological films after the tremendous success of her film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (1975). In the wake of her success, I do not think that she would have agreed to act in ‘Pyaase Nain’ post 1975. Going by the style of film making by Kidar Sharma in his later years, during which time he used to shoot the film as and when he could raise finance, this film must have been delayed for want of finance. By the time the film got completed, it was terribly out of date. Probably, the film got released only on Television.

One of the six songs which I liked the most from the film ‘Pyaase Nain’ (1989) is ‘aao aawaaz se aawaaz milaakar gaayen’ sung by Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur which I am presenting here. The song is written by Kidar Sharma which is set to music by Snehal Bhatkar. When I said earlier that Rafi’s voice sounds like that of his voice in the 60s, I remember his voice in the song dil-e-betaab ko seene se lagaana hoga from ‘Paalki’ (1967). Incidentally, this song is also sung by Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur.

With this song, ‘Pyaase Nain’ (1989) makes its debut on the Blog.

“Pardesi”(1970) was a “social” movie which was produced and directed by Kundan Kumar for Kundan Films, Bombay. The movie had Biswajeet, Mumtaz, Kanan Kaushal, Sujeet Kumar, Padma, Manmohan, Sulochana, Manmohan Krishna, Brahmchaari, Shabnam, Lata Bose, Keshav Rana, Jayshree T, Geetanjali, Bhagwan Sinha, Jankidas, Har Shukla, Anand Joshi, Jugal Kishore, Dinanath, Shah, Abu Bakar, Manohar, Nishaat, Jeevan etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

I am unable to identify the lady who lip syncs the song. Is she Kanan Kaushal ? I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

Today, 13th August is the birthday of Sridevi, as she turns 54.

For this celebration, here is a wonderful dance song performed by her, from the film ‘Jaag Utha Insaan’ (1984). The setting for the song is a stage performance, likely at a religious function. On stage, Sridevi is accompanied by Mithun Chaktravarty playing the flute and Beena signing the vocals. We also see Sudhir Dalvi, sitting next to Beena. In the audience we can see Yunus Parvez, sitting in the chair right up front, Sujeet Kumar and Kaanan Kaushal sitting  in the audience, Rakesh Roshan and Deven Verma, standing at the back, with Somayaajulu making an entry, while the program is in progress.
