‘Ye Nazdeekiyaan’ (1982) was produced and directed by Vinod Pande who also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues for the film. The film had Sabhana Azmi in the lead role with debutant, Marc Zuber, a London-based actor. Other actors in the film were Parveen Babi, Shekhar Kapoor, Neena Gupta, Bijoy Jena, Mala Jaggi, Sudhir Pandey, Bharati Achrekar, Vinod Pande, Helena Luke, Sunil Lahiri. Kaifi Azmi had a cameo role as a song writer. The film got ‘A’ Certificate from the Censor Board of Film Certification. This is the second film of Vinod Pande as a producer-director, the first being ‘Ek Baar Phir’ (1979).

I had covered the profile of producer-director, Vinod Pande in detail in my article for the Blog while discussing his another film, ‘Ek Naya Rishta’ (1988) and one of its songs, jise samjhe thhe hum afsaana kal tak. His films are mostly on man-woman relationship. ‘Ye Nazdeekiyaan’ (1982) is on extra-marital relationship of a husband who is in love with wife as well as with his other woman. The husband is in a dilemma how to handle the situation as he wants to continue his relationship with his wife as well as with his other woman. But wife is not ready. She leaves him to revive her singing career which she had given up after the marriage. The emphasise of the film is that a well-bonded marriage with love and emotional support is superior to the relationship developed through a couple of passionate encounters.

The film’s story is summarised below:

Sunil (Marc Zuber), a successful advertising executive, is happily married with Shobhana (Shabana Azmi). Recognising the field in which her husband works, and the trust she has developed on him, Shobhana does not take the serious note of his minor flirtations and temporary romantic relationship with other women so long as they do not threaten her position as a wife.

While everything was going harmonious in their 13 years of married life, Kiran (Parveen Babi), a leading model comes in to contact with Sunil while shooting advertising films with him. Initially, Sunil treats her closeness to him as a part of occupational necessity and tries to avoid his serious involvement with her. However, on one night together, Sunil does passionately get involved with her. At first, he takes it as an one-night stand. Over a period of time, they start spending much time together. Gradually, Sunil realises that he is in love with Kiran who is sincere toward him. But Sunil cannot think of leaving his wife for Kiran.

Despite Sunil’s attempt to find a workable solution to his liking, Shobhana is firm that Sunil cannot have a serious relationship with her as well as with Kiran. She decides to part with Sunil and goes back in reviving her singing career.

After a few months of relationship, Both Sunil and Kiran feel that they are gradually drifting away from each other. Sunil feels that the deep bonding he had with Shobhana is missing in his relationship with Kiran. On the other hand, Kiran feels that after the initial euphoria, Sunil does not love her as much as she is in love with him. One day, she leaves his house by telling him that relationship between them cannot be built on an enduring basis merely on the basis of a couple of passionate encounters.

Sunil is now desperate to be reunited with Shobhana as he had spent 13 year with her with no hic-ups in their married life. But Shobhana on the other hand, other than the formal greetings, avoids him. At a party on the occasion of the release of Shobhana’s album, Sunil gets an invitation. While in the party, Sunil tries to meet Shobhana, but she does not give him opportunity to talk to her. Feeling neglected, Sunil is about to leave the party when Manoj (Vinod Pande), Shobhana’s music director takes him to Shobhana. Sunil request Shobhana that if she agrees, he will like to dance with her. While dancing, both realises that they are still in love. Sunil and Shobhana are united with an implied understanding that she would continue her singing career.

The film’s story was contemporary which was evolving in the world of glamour. With crisp screenplay and tight editing, the film could have been made even better keeping the film’s duration of about 2 hours. The dialogues are good. It appears that this film was made keeping Shabana Azmi in the mind. She had almost the same type of role as in ‘Arth’ (1982). But in qualitative terms, ‘Arth’ (1982) was better film, so also Vinod Pande’s own film, ‘Ek Baar Phir’ (1979).

‘Ye Nazdeekiyaan’ (1982) had six songs written by four lyricists. All the songs were set to music by Raghunath Seth. Two songs from the film have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘ek daur wo bhi thhaa’ rendered by Anuradha Paudwal on the words of Kaifi Azmi. The song is picturised on Shabana Azmi. Manoj (Vinod Pande) conducts the orchestra during the recording of the song. Sunil (Marc Zuber), who has already move with Kiran, is waiting outside to meet her after the recording gets over.

The background of this song in the film is that Shobhana (Shabana Azmi), after divorcing Sunil (Marc Zuber), has gone back for reviving her singing career which she had given up after the marriage. Her singing career has taken off and she is now financially independent. Her ex-husband, Sunil has come to meet her in the recording studio, probably for a reconciliation but he never gets her time except for the exchange of pleasantries.

This song sums up the emotional upheaval of in the mind of protagonist of the film.

Song-Ek daur wo bhee thhaa (Ye Nazdeekiyaan)(1982) Singer-Anuradha Paudwal, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Raghunath Seth

Lyrics: (Based on audio clip)

ek daur wo bhee thhaa
ek daur ye bhee hai
ek daur wo bhee thhaa
ek daur ye bhee hai
ek daur ye bhee hai

ek daur wo bhee thhaa
ham jo kah na paate thhe
aap wo bhee sunte thhe
kaanton ko pare kar ke
ek phool chunte thhe
ek khwaab bunte thhe
ek daur wo bhee thhaa

ek daur ye bhee hai..ae ae ae ae
jo bhi kehnaa sunanaa hai
khud se kehte sunte hain
phool ho ke kaante ho
apne aap hee chunte hain
jitne sapne toote hain
utne sapne bunten hain
ek daur ye bhee hai
ye bhee hai
ye bhee hai

ek daur wo bhee thhaa
ham jahaan bhee jaate thhe
saathh saathh jaate thhe
saathh ladkhadaate thhe
saathh ladkhadaate to
ham sambhal bhee jaate thhe
ham sambhal bhee jaate thhe
ek daur wo bhee thhaa

ek daur ye bhee hai..ae ae ae ae
ab jahaan bhee jaate hain
poochhate hain raaste bhee
kyun akele phirte ho
iss tarah sambhalnaa kyaa
lagtaa hai ke girte ho
lagtaa hai ke girte ho
ek daur ye bhee hai
ek daur ye bhee hai
ye bhee hai
ye bhee hai

ek daur wo bhee thhaa
jab bahut thheen nazdikee
ek daur ye bhee hai
jab hai utnee hee dooree
kisko dosh de koi
waqt kee ye majbooree
raat baaqee hai lekin
neend ho chukee pooree
ek daur wo bhee thhaa
wo bhee thhaa
wo bhee thhaa
ek daur ye bhee hai
ye bhee hai
ye bhee hai

Thank You Sadanandji for bringing this song on to the blog. I used to love it back then along with the song (tum asha vishwaas hamare) from Smita Patil starrer “Subah”

Marc Zuber was born Zubair Ahmed Siddiqi in Lucknow in 1944 & went to London in 1951 to join his father who was a Radio producer at BBC.
I remember him as the the good-looking reporter who brings “Kamla” to the city; as in cop in the Hema Malini starrer “Ram Tere Desh”; as a friend to Sanjeev Kumar in “Qatl” & the Simi Garewal directed “Rukhsat”.
He was seen in barely 10-15 Hindi films as possibly the audiences didn’t appreciate his ‘drawl’- laced dailogue delivery style. He was 59 when he passed away in 2003.

Peevesie’s Mom,

Thanks for the mini-profile of Marc Zuber. I did not like his dialogue delivery in the film under discussion.
