Nutan (4 June 1936 – 21 February 1991) needs no introduction. One of the finest actors to grace the silver screen in Indian cinema, she is best remembered for essaying some of the toughest roles with amazing grace, dignity and talent which seemed so natural in the multiple genres of characters she portrayed. With her charming screen presence in more than 90 films she acted with almost all of her co-actors during her time.
Winner of 5 Filmfare awards as Best Actress and another as Best supporting Actress, she further had similar number of nominations. She was also honored with Padma Shri in 1974 by the Government.
There are multiple interviews of Nutan as well as that of her admirers on the net. There are enough articles elaborating the many roles she donned in her films. Further, our blog too has many biographical and filmi career-oriented posts on her. As such, I shall be skipping details on her roles in various films.
Alternatively, I present in this post a different facet of her career. Apart from her renowned acting skills, Nutan sang a few of her own songs and also wrote lyrics for 4 songs. This aspect of her career is also a known fact especially her songs in the film ‘Chhabili’ (1960), a film directed by her mother Shobhna Samarth to launch her sister Tanuja. Nutan has sung as many as 6 songs in this film.
Now, this is somewhat confusing for me at least. If ‘Chhabili’ was to launch Tanuja, why Nutan ended up acting and singing most of the songs in the film? In fact, whenever the songs sung by Nutan are discussed, this is the first film that comes to mind. A decade earlier in 1950, Nutan had sung her first song in the film ‘Hamaari Beti’ (1950). This was again the directorial debut of her mother.
Interestingly, both ‘Hamaari Beti’ as well as ‘Chhabili’ had both the daughters working under their director mother.
Anyway, moving on to Nutan’s singing career, many sources account for ‘8 songs’ sung by her in Hindi films. I was curious to enlist these songs so that it remains an easy reference on one page for readers willing to know about it. To my surprise, I find all 8 songs have already been covered.
However, in the process, I came across an obscure film ‘Mayuri’ (1985). In spite of being one of the last few movies that she acted, this film for some reason has vanished without a trace. The film as well as the songs are relatively hard to find.
The frustration of finding any information about Nutan starred ‘Mayuri’ is fueled by the fact of release of another film of the same title in the same period. It is a Telugu film ‘Mayuri’ (1985) starring Sudha Chandran in her debut role as an actress.
Wait, there is more. This Telugu film was remade in Hindi and was called ‘Naache Mayuri‘ (1986). And, music lovers who have some clue of Nutan singing a few songs in 80’s confuse ‘Mayuri’ with ‘Kasturi‘ (1978) in which Nutan acted. However, it seems ‘Kasturi’ (1978) was a film without any songs. And incidentally, another film by the name ‘Mayuri’ was later released in 2001.
Suffice to say, Mayuri (1985) for some reasons including the same-film-name confusions referred above has remained obscure.
There are some references stating that the songs of Mayuri (1985) were recorded and released in 1975 itself and the film was released in 1985. Some account 1983 as the release year of the film. I request knowledgeable readers to throw some light on the making of this film.
To arrive at all these confusions and clarifications, I had to refer to quite a few sources, posts, blogs etc.

So, its 6 solos in the list of a total of 12 songs. I suppose the most famous song in the list above is at Sl. No. 04 which also is rather known for the version of Hemant Kumar.
Nutan has no duets with the Rafi, Talat, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar or Manna da. She has no duets with Lata, Asha or Suman; singers who gave most of the playback for her. Nutan’s singing career, I am afraid has nothing much to be written about. In several of her stage shows she did sing her own songs especially the one from Anari.
Interestingly, in the film Paying Guest, she has some sort of a recital or a couplets rendition with Shubha Khote and sans without any music. This is not counted as a song anywhere. In this scene, it is clear Nutan is singing for herself. I wonder who is singing for Shubha Khote.
Thus, there could be few more instances where Nutan has sung a line or two and are not counted as songs. However, a sincere effort has been made to collate all her songs on one page for ready reference. This exercise was in the making for a long time and I am happy that I have been able to bring it to some shape for presenting as a post.
An interesting trivia as we are discussing Nutan as a singer. It appears that Nutan, Mukesh, Premnath and Raj Kapoor had taken singing lessons from the same Pandit Jagannath Prasad. I hope I am right in making this statement.
As stated above, the songs of Mayuri (1985) are difficult to trace. Not much is known about this film either. The basic information as per Geet Kosh is that this film is produced and directed by Biren Bhattacharya under the banner of Shiromani Films, Bombay. The cast of actors is listed as Nutan, Vasant Chaudhry, Abhi Bhattacharya, Geeta Khanna, Dinesh Thakur, Gyan Prakash, Smeena, Sulochana, Helen, Nitin Sethi, Jagdeep, Champa Malini, Mumtaz, Nandita Thakur, Dharmendra Pathak, Pardesi, Aytoda, with debut appearance by Anand Bapat.
The film has four songs. All the songs are penned by Nutan, and are sung by her. One of the songs is a duet with Amit Kumar. The music is by Kanu Roy. This was his last film as a music director. The background music is composed by Sapan Jagmohan.
