Hullo Atuldom
We are in the month of November. This month sees a few beautiful ladies, who were crowned Miss India & also, who went on to grace the Silver Screen of Bollywood celebrate their birthdays. I am sure there would have been such beauties gracing other industries of regional cinema too, but my mind is a stuck on the Miss India/s of Hindi Films. A few days back it was Juhi Chawla & Aishwarya Rai’s birthdays, Zeenat Aman & Sushmita Sen’s will follow.
The Miss India who is having her birthday today, is an accomplished dancer who followed in the steps of Hema Malini- who walked the same road as Vyjayanthimala. Currently, she is in retirement from films but has not hung up her dancing ghungroos (we cannot say dancing shoes as Indian classical dancers use ghungroos). She is settled in Texas, USA where she teaches Bharatnatyam, Kathak & Odissi dance forms. She does come to India & was seen on a few reality shows as star-judge too. She learnt her first few dance steps from her mother Sundari Seshadri. We are wishing Shashikala Seshadri, who went by the name Meenakshi Seshadri in films, on turning 60!!!!😳 Can’t believe she is 60 already.
After winning the Miss India title in 1981 she was introduced in Hindi films by Manoj Kumar opposite his brother in “Painter Babu” (1983). Shubash Ghai’s “Hero” (1983) brought her more fans. Thereafter there was no looking back. She was paired opposite all the heroes of that period and was successful in almost all of them. Her notable pairings were with Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sunny Deol, Mithun Chakravarty, Rishi Kapoor etc. She was also present in 2- heroine movies like Yash Chopra’s “Vijay”, Ramesh Sippy’s “Akayla” Manmohan Desai’s “Allahrakha” etc.
Two years back, on this date, I had sent this song to Atulji to wish Meenakshi. That song had her performing, what used to be called a Cabaret or Club dance. I have also seen her dance to typical Bollywood dance form as also Mujras. She was loved as much for her dances as her emoting abilities. She has also played the haughty rich-spoilt daughter in a few films.
We have a lot of songs featuring this beauty yet to come on the blog. Since I mentioned Manmohan Desai’s “Allahrakha” (1986) here is a song from that film. The film had Meenakshi Seshadri adoring Jackie Shroff who has Dimple in his heart. Shammi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Biswajeet, Anupam Kher, Bindu, Goga Kapoor, Sudhir, Bob Christo etc in supporting roles. Aruna Irani played a guest appearance. (All of this I have written from memory- I am sure I am missing the names of few actors who played important characters in the film). Music was by Anu Malik who used the voices of Asha Bhosle, S. Janaki, Mohd Aziz, Shabbir Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar for songs written by Rajinder Krishan. The film was directed by Ketan Desai.
The situation for today’s song is a party that is hosted by Bindu to charm an in-disguise Jackie Shroff. Meenakshi has just discovered that Bindu is her “naajayaz” mother who is responsible for her becoming a street-walker. She has challenged Bindu that she will defame her in public. Many important characters of the film are part of the party. Otherwise, the general story of “Allahrakha” is typical of Manmohan Desai films meaning a “family getting separated in the beginning, discovering each other & getting back together.”

You are right Shenoyji, I don’t believe that u didn’t know that Meenakshi Seshadri was a Miss India. I know u like Meenakshi Seshadri’s work
