Hullo Atuldom

Remembering Nirmala Nagpal today on her birth anniversary. She was born in Mumbai (Bombay back then) on 22nd November 1948. That gives us an idea that she must have been hardly 9 or 10 years of age when she danced in the chorus of the famous club-scene songs of “Howrah Bridge” (1958). She was just 3 years when she appeared in some films as baby Shyama & was a background (chorus) dancer in the late 1950s. She was all of 13 (not unusual for those times, I think) when she married the much-married & father of four -B. Sohanlal- a popular choreographer of that period. The couple separated in a few years but not before she had borne three children. Later, she married a businessman Sardar Roshan Khan, adopted Islam & changed her name to Saroj Khan – a name that gave her work & fame and was known by till she passed away on 3rd July 2020; due to cardiac arrest.

On her passing, this is what Sanjay Leela Bhansali had to say of his association with her –

She was an absolute genius. Her rhythm patterns were so unique that one couldn’t imagine them being interpreted in any other way. When she came to see the rushes of her work in ‘Nimbooda’ in “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, she said, ‘Yeh mere achche kaam mein se hai (this is one of my best work)’. She could create 30 movements out of the same musical beat. She understood the importance of a beat. It was sacrosanct to her.”

The first time that Sanjay Bhansali had associated with Saroj Khan was for “Khamoshi: The musical” (1996) which had some great songs & dances. He further said that

“I loved her professionalism. She brought stardom to choreography just like Salim-Javed brought stardom to scriptwriting. There were great choreographers before her, but Sarojji brought an aura to choreography.”

In some old interviews of Sarojji which I saw before sitting to write this, I heard her thoughts about all the actors who were dancers & non-dancers (that video was about male actors). She said she had never got a chance to work with Salman Khan but the other two Khans – Shahrukh & Aamir were good learners. Also, she said she was surprised that in a family that has Dharmendra & Sunny Deol; Bobby Deol was a good dancer.

“Don” (1979) is a much-loved film among movie goers and star-kids or kids who grew up into the film industry are/were no different. There are many in the film industry who are fans of that film. And it is a privilege some of them have that they have access to finances that they can invest into film making. Farhan Akhtar is one such film-industry kid. Added to that he is the son of the script writer of “Don”. So, when he wanted to remake it, giving it his own style, it got made & released in 2006. Saroj Khan agreed to choreograph “Khaike Paan Banaras Waala” in the remade version of “Don” as a tribute to her mentor P.L.Raj- who was the choreographer in the original. She also choreographed “aaj ki raat” in “Don” (2006) which was “jiska mujhe tha intezaar” in the original.

The new “Khaike Paan Banaras Waala” was in the voice of Udit Narayan. Anjaan & Kalyanji- Anandji have been given credit for the lyrics & music respectively. Additional words that SRK utters in the song were written by Jaaved Akhtar & music enhancement was by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy. I would also like to bring to the reader’s notice the near similarity of SRK’s shirt with Amithabh Bachchan’s in the original. Also there is a portion of the song before the last antara that is in SRK’s vocals.

With this song we remember the ace choreographer Saroj Khan on her birth anniversary.

P.S. This song constantly played on the back of mind on my recent trip to Kashi alias Varanasi alias Benaras, whenever my husband asked for a paan after meal. He got to eat it only on two occasions though.

Lyrics

arey tumka kaa bataai bhaiya
hamra haal kaa hai ae ae ae
bataay de bataay de
nikle thhe ham halwa khaane
munh hi jal gaya hai

hmm
kaa tumka batayi
ab kaa samjhayi
badi durghatna hai
mushkil bachna hai
chala aisa chakkar
uthhi aisi aandhi
padi humka karni
badi kooda phaandi
badi lambi chaudee
jai ho
huyi bhaaga daudi
jai ho
din raat jo humne jaag jaag
kee aisi bhaagam bhaag
ke ham kabhi hiyaan gaye
kabhi huaan gaye
kabhi hiyaan gaye
kabhi huaan gaye
kabhi idhar bhage
kabhi udhar bhage
phir tumne diya ye paan
to aayi hamri jaan mein jaan
to aayi hamri jaan mein jaan
to aayi hamri jaan mein jaan

o khaike paan banaras waala
khaike paan banaras waala
khul jaaye band akal kaa taala
o khaike paan banaras waala
khaike paan banaras wala
khuli jaaye band akal kaa taala
phir to aisa kare dhamaal
seedhi kar de sabki chaal
o chhora
o chhora
o chhora ganga kinaare waala
o chhora ganga kinaare waala
haa
khaike paan banaras waala
khuli jaye band akal kaa taala

arey raam duhaayi ee ee
kaise chakkar mein pad gaya haay haay haay
kahaan jaan phansaayee ee
main to sooli pe chadh gaya haay haay
kaisa seedha saadha
main kaisa bhola bhaala haan haan
arey kaisa seedha saadha
main kaisa bhola bhaala
jaane kaun ghadi mein pad gaya padhe likhon se paala
meethhi chhuri se
meethhi chhuri se hua halaal
chhora ganga kinaare waala
o chhora ganga kinaare waala
haa
khaike paan banaras waala
khuli jaye band akal kaa taala

ek naar naveli badi albeli kare athhkeli
uski badi hai dhoom
hai aisi man bhaavan
sab dekhen usko palat palat aur ghoom ghoom
wo nagar nagar jaaye dagar dagar
aur ang ang mein jyoti chamke jagar jagar
sundar baala
palkon mein liye ek swapn lok
adhron mein liye yauvan haala
ithhlaati hai balkhaati hai
tan kaa chandan
wo chhalak chhalak jhalkaati hai
wo nain dwaar se tan mein aake
man mein jwaala jagaati hai
wo chandramukhi hai
wo mrignaini hai
wo chandramukhi hai
waah bhai waah
wo mrignaini hai
waah bhai waah
wo roopvati hai
waah bhai waah
wo madhumati hai
waah bhai waaha
dhin taak dhin tak dhin taak haan

ik kanya kunwaari ee ee
hamri soorat pe mar gayi
haay
haay
haay
ik meethi kataari ee ee
hamare dil mein utar gayi haay haay
kaisi gori gori
o teekhi teekhi chhori
waah waah
arey kaisi gori gori
o teekhi teekhi chhori
karke jora jori
kar gayi hamre dil ki chori
mili chhori to
mili chhori to hua nihaal
chhora ganga kinaare waala
o chhora ganga kinaare waala
o khaike paan banaras waala
khul jaaye band akal kaa taala
o khaike paan banaras waala
khuli jaaye band akal kaa taala
phir to aisa kare dhamaal
seedhi kar de sabki chaal
o chhora o chhora
o chhora ganga kinaare waala
o chhora ganga kinaare waala
haa
