‘Chandamama’ was a children’s monthly magazine known for its illustrations, long running mythological and magical stories. I was a huge fan of it & used to be gifted with a copy of it, as reward, for good showing in curricular & co-curricular activities. I had a collection of those books along with a few editions of Champak, Phantom, Mandrake, Tarzan & Amar Chitra Katha, like most children of those times.

In addition to stories based on Indian mythology, Jataka Tales & tales from the Panchatantra ‘Chandamama’ sometimes carried stories-in-pictures, of the forthcoming films of the Vijaya-Vauhini Studios of Chennai (Madras back then). This is because Vijaya-Vauhini Studios was setup by B. Nagi Reddy who was also the brain behind ‘Chandamama’ which was launched by him & Chakrapani (another prominent screenwriter, filmmaker of that era). Whatever I am stating is about the English edition of ‘Chandamama’ which was originally launched in July of 1947 in Telugu.

As I have stated in the previous para, I have seen the story-in-pictures of B. Nagi Reddy’s ‘Yehi Hai Zindagi’ (1977); ‘Swayamvar’ (1980); & ‘Shriman Shrimati’ (1982). Whoever the artist making those illustrations for ‘Chandamama’ was excellent & his drawings of the actors of the concerned movies were exact. ‘Swarg Narak’ (1978) also was a Hindi Film from the stable of Vijaya-Vauhini Studios.
The common actor in all the four movies was Sanjeev Kumar.

There was no prominent second lead actor in ‘Yehi Hai Zindagi’ (YHZ) but ‘Swarg Narak’ (SN) had Jeetendra & Vinod Mehra; ‘Swayamvar’ had Shashi Kapoor, & ‘Shriman Shrimati’ (SS) had Rakesh Roshan & Amol Palekar playing important male characters. The ladies opposite Sanjeev Kumar were Seema Deo in ‘YHZ’, Shobhini Singh in ‘SN’, Vidya Sinha in ‘Swayamvar’ & Rakhee in ‘SS’. As I scanned the ‘List of songs Moviewise’ tab of the blog I found that only ‘SS’ is left to be yyippeeeed. In-fact, the blog has only one song from this movie. This one song was posted almost 10 years back on Lata Mangeshar’s birthday.

24th November is the 80th birthday of a much-loved actor of the late 1970s & 1980s. He was born in a Marathi speaking family to Kamlakar & Suhasini Palekar. We are celebrating Amol Palekar’s birthday today. He had studied fine arts from Bombay’s J.J. School of Art & as a painter, he had seven one-man exhibitions. He is better known as a stage & film Actor. Though, his contribution to modern Indian Theatre is overshadowed by his popularity in Hindi Films. He has also acted in Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu & (his mother tongue) Marathi films.

Amol Palekar is best known for his ‘boy next door’ characters but we cannot blink away the grey characters he played in ‘Bhumika’, ‘Khamosh’, ‘Agni Pareeksha’, ‘Aanchal’, etc. & later in his career, in ‘Teesra Kaun’ (1994) after which he took a break from acting to concentrate on filmmaking. Last year, we saw him in two OTT films too.

He was paired opposite Zarina Wahab, Vidya Sinha & Shabana Azmi in more that two or three films. In “Shriman Shrimati” Sarika played his wife.

“Shriman Shrimati”, essentially, was based on the age-old Indian debate of “Is arranged marriage better or love marriage better?”

We had Rakhee & Sanjeev Kumar play parents of a daughter who falls in love with a boy who has his eye on his wife’s family’s wealth. The parents get her married to this boy, in-spite of not approving him, simply because the daughter is adamant. Eventually the girl commits suicide, unable to own up to her parents, about the wrong choice she had made. During the course of the film, this couple come across another two young couples- Rakesh Roshan & Deepti Naval and Amol Palekar & Sarika- who are facing compatibility issues in their (arranged) marriage. This is due to the girls (who are friends) exchanging their attire, at the time of getting photos clicked, to send to prospective grooms. (Photos used to be the first introduction cards for arranged marriages).

The rest of the film is devoted to how Sanjeev Kumar & Rakhee help in getting the problems sorted, with a lengthy speech to drill the message of the film into the public’s brains bringing the film to a close.

“Shriman Shrimati” had music by Rajesh Roshan with Majrooh Sultanpuri as the lyricist. The songs had playback by Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar.

dheere se chal
sota hai munna hamaara
jhoole mein kaisa tim tim kare
maa ke naseebon ka taara

sota hai munna hamaara

chup ho gaya rotey rotey
jaage naheen sotey sotey
rahna kadam roke
bhola hai ye
naazuk hai ye
upar se hai besahaara
o ree hawa
dheere se chal
sota hai munna hamaara

hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm

hotee hai mamta deewaani
duniya jo kehtee kahaanee
ye uskee naadaanee
maine to aaj dekha yahaan
bilkul hee ulta nazaara

tanha ise chhodkar ke
mummy gayee ban sanwar ke
niklee hai yoon ghar se
jaise ki ye apna naheen
dooja hai koi bechaara

o ree hawa
dheere se chal
sota hai munna hamaara
