(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s Remembrance Anniversary)
——————————————————————

Today 4th January 2025 is the 31th Remembrance Anniversary of the great music-director Rahul Dev Burman whom we fondly know by his nickname Pancham.

Rahul Dev Burman was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4th January 1994 at the age of only 54. As a tribute to him on the blog today we will enjoy a few songs composed by him. As per the statistics on the blog Pancham composed around 1755 songs for 331 Hindi movies. From these 1755 songs, so far 864 songs have been covered on the blog. So we still have over 800 Pancham composed songs to choose from.

Today I will not go into the biographical details or other known stories of Pancham that are available in the domain or which have been discussed before. Today we will enjoy the songs composed by him and we will remember this genius music composer with his music and some of the evergreen timeless classic songs that he has left as his legacy.

To start with I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Sitamgar-1985’. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 08.03.1985. It was directed by Raj N Sippy for Bikramjeet Films International, Bombay and produced by Bikram Singh Dehal. It had Dharmendra, Parveen Babi, Rishi Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Prem Chopra, Jagdish Raj Gurbachan, Ranvir Raj, Azad, Tilak Mehta, Raj Kaul, Shamsuddin, Nath Kamle, Ved Akash, Ashok Gaekwad, Master Alankar and Baby Geeta. Narendra Nath, Sonia Shania and Sudhir make special appearance in this movie. Ved Aakash and Pankaj Kharbanda were the Chief Assistant Directors of this movie. Ashok Gaekwad was the Associate Director for this movie. V.N. Mayekar was the editor while Sakharam Borse assisted him in editing. Story and Screenplay of this movie was written by Mirza Brothers and dialogues were written by Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza.

This movie had six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R.D. Burman (Manohari, Babloo and Martin were assistants). Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

I have earlier presented two songs from this movie on the blog. I had earlier mentioned that the songs in this movie are nice songs and a few of them are very nice. In fact I need to correct my statement that this movie songs are ‘hidden gems’. They are well known gems.

For today’s post we have a lovely duet song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. This romantic duet is picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Poonam Dhillon in the movie. This duet is a soothing duet which one can enjoy while driving or travelling. This song should be featuring among the top romantic songs of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Pancham’s composition has guitar, tabla and drum-sticks and use of constant beats in this song. Its Asha Bhonsle’s voice starting this duet and we have a soft, mellow voice of Kishore Kumar who joins Asha Bhonsle in this song. Pancham’s composition and progression of the mukhdaa-interlude-antaraa in this song is something special. Equally special are the high notes and the exciting tune that mesmerise the listeners of this song and it keeps on growing.

In the year 1985 the annual Binaca Geetmala had twelve songs composed by R.D. Burman which included movies of 1985 like ‘Alag Alag’, ‘Rahee Badal Gaye’, ‘Saagar’, ‘Arjun’, ‘Laavaa’ then there songs from movies from the year 1984 like ‘Manzil Manzil’, and ‘Jawaanee’. However none of the songs from this movie ‘Sitamgar’ featured in the list and may be because of this movie didn’t do well. But the music of this movie remains as one of the Pancham’s best albums of that year.

Let us pay our tributes to Pancham and thank him for all the great music which he left behind for us to enjoy.

Wishing a happy new year 2025 to all, I start my contributions for the year 2025 on this blog today with this song. Let us hope that this year we will reach the 1000 songs for Pancham on this blog !!!
