‘Raaja’ (1963) was produced by Ram Dayal under the banner of Mukul Pictures and was directed by Radhakant. The cast included Vijaya Choudhary, Jagdeep, Jeevan, Helen, Sundar, Jeevankala, Kanchanmala, Shammi, Anant Prabhu, Mahendra, Gopal etc. It is one of the few films in which Jagdeep was in a lead role. His other films in the lead role were ‘Barkha’ (1960) and ‘Band Master’ (1963).
Jagdeep (29/03/1939 – 08/07/2020) was born in Datia in the present day Madhya Pradesh as Syed Ishtiyaq Ahmed Jaffery. His father who was a lawyer passed away early when Jagdeep was a child. During this period, some of his family members left for Pakistan soon after partition putting the family in dire financial crisis. The family shifted to Mumbai and Jagdeep grew up near Mahim dargah selling combs, soaps and kites to sustain the family.
The production team of ‘Afsaana’ (1951) was looking for children as audience for a children’s play being stage in the scene and they were to clap for which he would be paid Rs.3/-. Jagdeep joined the children. During the filming of the scene, one of the boys on the stage could not properly delivered an Urdu dialogue. Jagdeep volunteered and delivered the dialogue for which he was paid double the amount. In this way, he got associated with Hindi films without any pre-planning to become an actor.
Jagdeep formally got his first role as a child artist in ‘Dhobi Doctor’ (1954) directed by Phani Majumdar in which he had a small role of a crying child along with Baby Asha Parekh. Bimal Roy had seen the film’s rushes in which he saw Jagdeep’s small role. He took him as a child artist in ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ (1953) in which he was a shoe-shine boy in a comic role. After few days, Jagdeep got courage to ask Bimal Da as to why he selected him for a comic role. Bimal Roy explained to him that if you can act in a crying role with depth, you can as well perform a comic role in the same intensity. With this role, he was noticed by other directors for his comic timing which gave him some more roles. (Source: This as well as the anecdote mentioned on the earlier paragraph are based on Jagdeep’s interviews uploded on a video sharing platform).
As a child artist. Jagdeep worked in other films such as ‘Footpath’ (1953), ‘Laila Majnu’ 1953), ‘Paapi’ (1953), ‘Aar Paar’ (1954), ‘Naukri’ (1954), ‘Railway Platform’ (1955), ‘Daake Ki Malmal’ (1956) etc. He also worked in three children’s films – ‘Munna’ (1954), ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’ (1957) and ‘Ham Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’ (1957).
Jagdeep’s first adult role was in AVM’s ‘Bhabhi’ (1957) in which he was paired with Nanda in the second lead role. His transition from the child artist to adult roles was smooth without any break. With his film, his association with AVM started for the next 4 years during which worked with them in ‘Baap Bete’ (1959), ‘Barkha’ (1960) and ‘Bindiya’ (1960). In all these films, he gave good performances in his serious and emotional roles. However, when the last two films as well as his subsquent films in lead role did not work well on the box office front, Jagdeep shifted back as comedian.
Two back-to-back comedian’s role in ‘Brahmachari’ (1968) and in ‘Teen Bahuraniyaan’(1968) won Jagdeep accolades which gave him a good push in his career as a comedian. His role as Surma Bhopali in ‘Sholay’ (1975) made him so much popular that people had nick named him as ‘Surma Bhopali’. Later, he produced and directed ‘Surma Bhopali’ (1988). His comedy mainly came from his mannerism, facial gestures and the unique style of dialogue delivery. He had an active filmy career as a comedian in 1970s and 80s.
Jagdeep had a long stint of nearly six decades in Hindi films during which he worked in over 375 films. He passed away on July 8, 2020, due to old age-related health issues.
As of now, ‘Raaja’ (1963) is not available for watching on any online platform. I could not get even the proper synopsis of the film’s story except that the film was about a prince of Pratapgarh who retrieved the diamond necklace of a princess which was stolen by a henchman of the Dewan of Pratapgarh. The princess falls in love with the prince. Whether they get united or the Dewan and his henchmen would usurp the prince to take over the throne of Pratapgarh?
I got the film’s comprehensive story which appeared on ‘Picturepost’ May 1963 issue, courtesy, Pradhyapak Surjit Singh’s Website. I have paraphrased the story of the film as under:
Prince Deepak (Jagdeep) returns to his kingdom of Pratapgarh with a dog and a horse gifted by his Guru after completing his education. The Queen Mother (Kanchanmala) hosts a ceremonial reception during which she intends to announce that Prince Deepak would be the next king. Dewan (Jeevan) who is eying to take over the kingdom is not happy with Queen Mother’s decision. He points out that according to the convention, Prince Deepak cannot be made the King until he is married.
As a part of taking over the kingdom, Dewan creates unrest among the people by sending his henchmen for arson, looting and indulging in atrocities in the kingdom. He also seeks the help of Mala (Jeevankala) who will prepare the food mixed with drug which will make Prince Deepak insane when he consumes it. After many instances of looting and arsons, Prince Deepak sees it as a plot by some miscreants to destabilse the kingdom. He starts investigating as to who are the miscreants. He fixes a transmitter in his dog’s collar through which he suspects the involvement of Dewan in creating unrest.
Queen Mother has planned for the marriage of Prince Deepak with the Princess of Aaramgadh (Vijaya Choudhary) for which she invites her to stay with her in the palace for few days to get acquainted with Prince Deepak. Princess travels by car to Pratapgadh on the invitation of the Queen Mother. On the way, a ruffian waylays the car and orders the Princess to handover her diamond necklace to him. Out of fear, she does that but a voice come from the distance ordering the ruffian to handover the necklace back to the Princess. Actually, it is stage managed by Dewan to be in good books of the Princess. When the necklace was being handed back to the Princess, it is again snatched by an unidentified Pathan who considers as his privilege to give back the necklace to the Princess. In reality, it is Prince Deepak in the guise of a Pathan.
The mixture which Mala has prepared and served to Prince Deepak makes him insane. Princess refuses to marry him. The Queen Mother assures her that Prince Deepak has a habit of behaving funnily during his childhood which should not be taken as insanity. She requests Princess to stay with her for few more days to get to know Prince Deepak better.
Prince Deepak gets a feeling that whatever has been happening in the kingdom since his arrival has been happening through Dewan’s friend, Bankelal (Sundar). So, he continues to deploy his dog with transmitter in its collar to get the feedback. One day, Prince Deepak and the Princess go to attend a carnival during which the Princess’s precious necklace is stolen by someone. She is worried as something or the other has been happening in the kingdom since her arrival.
Prince Deepak comes to know from the transmitter of his dog that the stolen necklace is to be sold to a jeweller at a high price for which Dewan’s man would collect the money. Once again Prince Deepak in the guise of a Pathan snatches the necklace from Dewan’s man and returns it to the Princess. Now it is beyond doubt for Prince Deepak that Dewan is involved
in whatever unsavoury things happening in the kingdom. He orders his men to handcuff Dewan. However, all men being the henchmen of Dewan, Prince Deepak is handcuffed by Dewan’s men. Later, Dewan put the palace on fire and declare Prince Deepak dead by fire. The news is relayed to the Queen Mother.
However, Prince Deepak is saved by his dog and the horse gifted by his Guru. When Dewan comes to know about it, he kidnaps Princess and takes her with him assuming that Prince Deepak would surely come to rescue her. Prince Deepak comes in the guise of a Pathan to rescue the Princess, and he is trapped by Dewan’s men. Both Prince Deepak and Princess are tied by ropes. The Queen Mother is brought to see herself prince Deepak and the Princess and is asked to handover the keys of the treasury to Dewan. When things looks bleak for Queen Mother and Prince Deepak, his Guru with his followers reach on the scene and overpower Dewan and his henchmen. Prince Deepak and the Princess get released. The peace in the kingdom is restored. Both Prince Deepak and the Princess get married.
The film had six songs written by Prem Dhawan (5) and Anand Bakshi (1) which were set to music by S N Tripathi. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘idhar bijlee udhar sholaa’ rendered by Asha Bhosle on the lyrics of Prem Dhawan. The song is picturised on Helen in the presence of Kanchanmala, Jagdeep and Jeevan. Sundar and Jeevankala are also briefly seen.
Probably, the context of the song is that the Queen Mother (Kanchanmala) has hosted a reception for Prince Deepak (Jagdeep) on his return to the kingdom during which Dewan (Jeevan) arranges serving some food lace with drug to make the Prince insane.
