Today’s song is from the film Panghat-1943.
The film was made by Prakash Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by K.J.Parmar and Mahesh Chander. Music was by S.N.Tripathi. The Lyricists were Pt. Indra and Ramesh Gupta. The cast included Ratnamala, Umakant, Jeevan, Susheel Kumar, Rajkumari Shukla, Baby Tara, Alaknanda, Baldev and many more. There were 12 songs in the film. today’s song is the 8th song to feature here.
There are some fixed story-sets which are popular with Indian filmmakers. They only give what their audience loves to see any number of times in different garbs. One of the popular story ideas is the ‘ Case of the Mistaken Identity’. There are two types in this category. One is Twins or similar looking persons and the second is due to the same name or wrong person at the right time. Film panghat-1943 falls in the second category. This is a story of mistaken identity of a wrong person coming at the right place and at the right time and thus causing misunderstanding about his real identity.
Hundreds of films, almost in every language, on this theme are made and the Indian audience has responded with equal enthusiasm and patronage. This tendency was taken advantage of by clever producers like Nasir Hussain and ManMohan Desai in the 70’s and the 80’s decades. The story of the film panghat-1943 was ….
The story is very interesting and will remind the readers of a popular and famous film of 1976 with melodious music.
Jamuna Prasad Chaturvedi(Jeevan-who was Onkarnath Dhar in real life, but known as OK Dhar Kashmiri in the 30s) son of Durgaprasad Chaturvedi, is an orthodox Bramhin Zamindar who has built a community Well, for water to everybody in the surrounding villages. His wife Mrs Shantidevi(Leela) and he are popular. When his daughter Radha grows up, he fixes her marriage with Mohan(Umakant Desai) son of Trivedi, a big businessman from other village.
Kiran, son of Ganga Prasad arrives instead of Mohan and is welcomed by them. Kiran is loved by Jamunaprasad ,his wife AND also Radha. After some time when the real identity of Kiran is revealed he is refused by Jamuna and his wife and he is suggested in various ways to leave. Then Mohan arrives and realises the mistake but finally sacrifices for the sake of lovers and the end is good. Rajkumari has done the role of Jyoti, Heroine’s friend and the Heroine Radha is Ratnamala. Kiran Kumar is Sushil Kumar.
By now, it must be clear that the story is the same as that of CHITCHOR(1976) starring Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab.
As far as the Heroine Ratnamala is concerned, how many of us really know anything about this actress. It is surprising that a very lovely and beautiful actress, who was Heroine of about 20 films in the 40s and has about 300 films to her credit remains practically unknown. She was the Heroine with Saraswati Cinetone, Prabhat Film company Sagar, Ranjit, Prakash pictures etc- all well known banners. She was in films for 50+ years and was a famous name in Marathi films of Dada Kondke.
It’s a great pity that hardly any or no information about her is available in books, Encyclopedias, wiki or on the Internet. When all sources of information come to a dead end, I turn to Harish Raghuwanshi ji of Surat and I am never disappointed. Here, I provide a short Biodata of Ratnamala, based principally on the articles given by Harish ji. Thanks, Harish ji.
She was born as Kamal Bhivandkar on 22-6-1923 in Bombay. Her father was Auditor of Central Bank, Bombay. She was good looking and could sing well. From the age of 14 years, she went on the stage of several Ganesh Melas prevalent in those times. She earned 5-10 rupees per performance. Due to the family’s financial problems, she started looking for work. She was proficient in Marathi, Gujarati, English and Urdu languages. In 1938, she was picked up by Dada Torne of Sarswati Cinetone, Poona, who cast her as Heroine in Marathi film’ Bhagwa Zenda ‘. Seeing her performance, she was taken by Prabhat Film company for the Marathi version of their film Das Baje-42. Torne had renamed her as Ratnamala.
Vijay Bhatt of Prakash Pictures offered her a role in film ” Bharat Milap-42″, when Kusum Deshpande selected for the role of Bharat’s wife fell ill. Seeing her performance, she was selected as a Heroine for the film ‘ Station Master-42 ‘. Here too the original Heroine Jyoti fell ill. Then came Panghat-43, Police-44, Kavita-44 etc. She acted in many Mythological films also. Some of her well known films were, Dholak, Maya Bazar, Sasural, Bhabhi ki Chudiyan, Faulad, Woh kaun thi, Nishan, Bahu beti, Mera Saayaa, Raaz, SaraswatiChandra, Brahmachari, Upahaar, Seeta aur Geeta, Nastik etc etc.
She acted in 130 Hindi films and many more in Marathi films. Later she did side roles. She became famous as the mother of Dada Kondke in 11 of his films. She was called ‘ Aaye ‘ (‘आये’, the name for mothers, in villages) in the Marathi films of Kondke. Kondke had a record of giving continuous Jubilee films.
Ratnamala was married to Producer Director Raja Pandit, when she was very young. As Ratnamala became successful and Raja became a failure, their marriage came on rocks. She had one Son-Jaikumar, who had also acted in one film. Unfortunately, he died suddenly in an accident. Ratnamala lived in her own Bungalow in Andheri, Bombay, along with her foster son-Ramesh. Ratnamala died of a heart attack on 23rd January 1989.
You will find one more name in the cast-Alaknanda. In Hindi films, there were many sister-pairs who worked as actresses, but in the history of Hindi films-both Silent as well as Talkie- there have been only 3 sets of 3 sisters who worked as actresses in the same periods. The first set was of Zubeida, Sultana and Shehzadi in the early 30s. Then in the 40s came the second set of Alaknanda, Tara and Sitara Devi. In the 50s, the last Trio of Padmini, Ragini and Lalitha worked in the same period. After this, to my knowledge, no such Trio of actresses came on the screen. If you count step-sisters also, then Mehtab was the step-sister of the Zubeida, Sultana and Shehzadi trio. This made the only Quartet of Sister Actresses in Hindi Film History ever ! Even their mother Fatima acted, directed and Produced films, to boot !! Only their father did not join films !!!
Alaknanda was born in or around 1910 in a Banares situated Mishra family. Her clan had a tradition of singing in temples for the last 5 centuries. The family had close relations with Nepal and its Royal family. Her Grandfather was a court singer. Her grandmother and mother were from Nepal, so Alaknanda called herself as ‘ half Nepalese ‘.
When her father wanted to train her and her younger sister Tara, in Dancing and music, there was opposition from their society. Therefore the family moved to another corner of Banares and he started a Music school and trained children of Royal families from Bengal. In one of their visits to Calcutta, Sitara Devi was born in Calcutta. Alaknanda’s first Talkie film was Suryakumari-33. She worked in 37 films till late 40s. All three sisters worked together in the film Haiwaan-40. She has sung 15 songs in 7 films. She got Cancer and died sometime in or around 1947. Not much information is available about her or her sister Tara/Tara Devi/Tarabai.
Vithal Pandya, in his book mentions that in her last days, Tara stayed in Bombay slums and worked as extra in films in her old age.( Famous dancer Gopi krishna was her son) Sitara Devi, on the contrary, lived a famous, rich and majestic life, with several marriages. That’s life, anyway.
Let us now enjoy this 82 year old song….
