‘Senapati’ (1961) was produced by Jai Gopal Mohla under the banner Mohla Films and was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor, Nalini Jaywant, Amarnath, Veena, K N Singh, Tiwari, Helen, Durga Khote, Chaman Puri, Heera Sawant, Rajan Kapoor, Janakidas, Jeevan Kala, Madhumati etc. I heard the name of the producer, J G Mohla for the first time. Before this film, he had produced ’Insaan’ (1952) and ‘Ehsaan’ (1954). After ‘Senapati’ (1961), he seems to have vanished from Hindi films. But when I saw the name of Madan Mohla as the Associate Producer of this film, it gave me a hint of some connection with J G Mohla. Madan Mohla is a familiar name because of some of his box office hit films like ‘Sharafat’ (1972), ‘Raja Jani’ (1974), ‘Dus Numbri’ (1976) etc. The online search revealed that Madan Mohla was the son of Jai Gopal Mohla (J G Mohla). Incidentally, Madan Mohla was also the assistant director under director Kedar Kapoor for this film.

Today’s song is from a Muslim Social film – Ismat aka Asmat-1944.

!939 to Aug 1945 was the II World War period. Almost every country in the world was affected, either directly or indirectly. The year 1944 was a time when the world knew that the end of World War II was near, however, till that time the Raw Film shortage was troubling the film makers in India. Black money generated through Black marketing was disturbing the industry. The cost of the filmmaking, which was about a Lakh or so in 1940, had escalated to 5 to 6 lakhs per film. Studio system was weakened due to individual production practices started by black money investors.

Today’s song is from the first film of Nargis as a Hindi film heroine – Taqdeer-1943.

The film was made by Mehboob Khan for his banner, Mehboob productions, Bombay.

In the history of Hindi Cinema, Mehboob Khan’s name would be written prominently as one of the great directors, who rose from scratch to a height attained by few other directors. Mehboob Khan directed 8 films for Sagar, 3 films for National and 11 films for Mehboob productions.

Today’s song is from a very old -88year old – film, His Highness-1937.

I somehow like to write about old films. Names of old actors, directors and the composers bring many memories. Listening to songs from old films gives you an idea how cine music evolved and reached today’s state. In the beginning, the films were totally dependent on stage drama stories, Folklore and Mythology. Afterwards, they started using social themes, comedy and stunts. There was no problem with the stories. For talkie films in the early era, there were 3 sources of film stories…..
1. from Ramayan, Mahabharat, Puranas and other religious stories, social evils and family dramas
2. Using and copying themes from foreign and English films
and
3. Remakes of popular Silent films. About 30 to 40 % silent films were remade into Talkie films.

‘Kal Hamaaraa Hai’ (1959) was produced by K Amarnath and was directed by S K Prabhakar. The film’s story and the impression of the film have been well covered in the recent two articles on the film in the Blog. So, I will not repeat the same. Suffice to say here that the film was inspired from then Government’s efforts to improve the economic condition of the people of India through Five-Year Plans. However, there is a need to weed out corruption, anti-social elements and the social injustice. In these efforts, citizens have also some duties to perform, that is, to follow the path of honesty and hard work with the positive attitude.

I had not much thought about the film ‘Looteraa’ (2013) when it was released. At that time, I was not even aware of the main cast of the film. So, my first impression from the title of the film was that it may be of an upgraded version of ‘B’ grade films of 1950s and 60s type with the use of the latest technological advancements in moviemaking. After more than a decade, the film has come to my attention because of one of its songs, sanwaar loon haay sanwaar loon which I have come across the recent times in short video reels. The full video song made me to watch the film.
