Today’s song is from a musical social film Lajawab-1950.
The film was made under the banner of Variety Pictures by the Producer Ashalata Biswas (wife of Anil Biswas, MD). It was directed by J.P.Advani, a foreign trained specialist in film direction. The music of this film was composed by Anil Biswas. The cast of the film was Rehana, Sohan Kapila, Kuldeep Kaur, David, Pran, Iftikhar etc etc.
The hero of this film was Sohan Kapila. How many readers have heard this name ? He was one of those who entered films through his financer father’s push on the producers. There were many such actors in the period from 1946 to 1956. It is said that ‘No trees can grow under a Banyan Tree’. This is absolutely true and applicable in Film industry. Except in cases like the Kapoor family, i.e. Raj, Shammi and Shashi, who made their bright careers despite the shadow of their Father and other Brothers, we find that many of the sons, daughters, brothers or sisters of many popular and famous film stars were failures and never made it big in Hindi cinema.
We know cases like Suneil Anand, Nasir Khan, Tony Walker, Naina Sahu, Meera Joglekar, Ajit Chitnis, Rajendranath, Narendranath, Anup Kumar, Mallika, Khursheed Jr., Simple Kapadiya, Shivangi Kolhapure, Preeti Ganguly, Radhika and many more. In spite of having all the backing of famous family members, these and so many others just did not make it, because Talents are not always hereditary !
They all were given a fair opportunity to display their talent on the screen, but unfortunately despite their honest effort their skill could not come out & the viewers were left unimpressed. They were selected by big banners and well experienced directors were there to guide them. But their talent remained hidden inside them and with their nonexistent artistry they disappointed their mentors.
Sohan Kapila was the son of Mohandas Kapila, a big financier of Hindi films and a close relative of Tolaram Jalan, owner of Filmistan in the 50’s decade. Sohan entered the films as a Hero against Geeta Bali in the film Girls School (1949). Then he was in the film Lajawab (1950) with Rehana. His third film was Khamosh Sipahi (1950) with Nigar Sultana. After 2 more films- Sanskar (1958) and Ek Arman mera (1959) with Jayashree Gadkar, he was taken by Filmistan for the film Chand ki Duniya (1959) with nalini Chonkar.
Non-actor Sohan Kapila was in the romantic lead of Filmistan’s Babar, which was released in 1960. Hemen Gupta, distinguished director, who earlier had directed Anand Math for Filmistan, directed the movie and it also had the winning combination of Sahir & Roshan. Dependable character actor Gajanan Jagirdar did the role of great Moghal Emperor Babar. But the movie flopped, as the new hero failed pathetically to register any emotion on his face. A big jolt for Seth Tola Ram Jalan ,who was already facing financial problems. Mr. Kapila appeared in movies like Commercial Pilot officer (1963) and Picnic (1966), in inconsequential roles and disappeared from the scene forever . His daughter Padmini Kapila also pursued a film career, but could not achieve much success .
There were many other actors like him, who got a chance to appear opposite illustrious heroines, unfortunately their effort did not make any impact on the cine loving public. Watching their miserable performance on the screen , no film maker came forward to sign them. Out of sight is out of mind, it was a matter of time when the public as well as the film industry forgot them.
Malhaar, as the name suggests, was a musical film, produced by great singer Mukesh in 1951. It had a story by veteran actor S K Prem & its evergreen music was composed by Roshan . The movie had newcomers Arjun & Shammi (Nargis Rabadi ). Arjun did get another chance in Daku Ki Ladki to please the viewers with his emoting before the camera, but could not succeed and it was the end of his career.
Rattan Chopra the lucky boy was selected for films, among hundreds of aspirants. Mohan Kumar had suffered a huge setback when Aman flopped. He took the newcomer for Mom Ki Gudia, opposite Tanuja, with great hopes. Unfortunately , Mom Ki Gudia failed to dispel the gloom and sank to the rock bottom. Acting was not his cup of tea, Rattan Chopra understood & wisely opted out of the race of stardom.
K. Amarnath introduced new comer Vijay Kumar in his 1954 offering Alif Laila opposite Nimmi & Asha Mathur. Sohan Kapila and Vijay Kumar had impressive physique, but had no clue about acting. The movie had lilting music by Shyam Sunder, which was his last contribution towards the film industry. Helen for the first time got a chance to perform solo in the movie & for many decades she remained on top. But for Vijay Kumar it was his first & last chance.
Another non actor Premendra was introduced by old timer Vijay Bhatt in Holi Aayee Re (1970), which was directed by his younger sibling Harsukh Bhatt. It was pathetic to watch Premendra unsuccessfully trying to showcase his imaginary ability in the field of acting. The movie flopped phenomenally & a huge investment made by Bhatt Brothers went up in a cloud of smoke.
There were some more like Pratibha Sinha, Archan Gupta, Jayant Gupta, Ashok Sharma, Nusrat Kardar, Rajeev Kapoor, Manish Kumar, Navinchandra, Aroop Kumar, Prashant, Shalini, Kaycee Mehra, Vikram, Shekhar Suman, Deepak Kumar, Ajay, Som Dutt and many more.
Among them, some film names which I remember off hand are Arjun in Malhar-51, Rattan Chopra in Aman-67,Mom ki Gudia-72, Vijay kumar in Alif laila-54,Premendra in Holi aayee re-70, Deepak kumar in Aabroo-68, Ajay in Wapas-69, Som Dutt in mann ka meet-68, Vikram in Julie-75,Rajeev Kapoor in Ram teri Ganga maili-85, Shekhar Suman in Utsav-84, Kaycee mehra in Chhabilee-60 and mem didi-61, Prashant in Sehra-63, Ashok Sharma in Hamari yaad aayegi-61, Ajit Chitnis in Aaj ki baat-55, Nusrat Kardar in Dard-47, Manish in SaraswatiChandra-68, Rajiv in Nayi umar ki nayi fasal-65, Aroop kumar in Bezubaan-62 etc etc. (Based primarily on an article by S.N.Sardana ji and my notes ).
There are quite a few actors who were very lucky that they did not have to struggle at all to become a Hero in Hindi films. Actor Surendranath, B.A.LL.B is an excellent example. He joined Sagar Movietone straight as a Hero. Of course, he had the extra qualification that he could sing well. ( That is the reason Sagar was projecting him as a reply to Calcutta’s K L Saigal.). OK, Surendra had an asset, but what about Pradeep Kumar ? He came from Bengal and became a Hero in Hindi films directly. An exceptional case is that of Ashok Kumar. The Hero’s role was offered to him on a Silver platter ( not offered-thrust on him ! ) to start his Film career.
And yet there were actors who started directly as Character artists. For people like Kanhaiyalal, Asit Sen, S N Banerjee, A K Hangal or Harindranath Chattopadhyay etc, at least they were past their youth and hence took up character artist roles in films, but what about young, and good looking starting as an old man’s role to begin their film career ? One such actor was DAVID ABRAHAM.
David Abraham Cheulkar (21 june 1909 – 2 january 1982), popularly known as DAVID, was a Jewish Hindi film actor and he was a member of Mumbai’s Marathi speaking Bene Israel community. In a career spanning four decades, he played mostly character roles, starting with 1937 film “Zambo”, and went on to act in over 110 films, including memorable films like, Gol Maal (1979), Baton Baton mein (1979) and Boot Polish(1954) for which he was awarded the 1955 FilmFare Best Supporting Actor Award.
David graduated from the University of Bombay with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the year 1930. After a six year unsuccessful struggle to land himself a job, he decided to try his luck in the Hindi film industry by becoming a professional actor. During these years of struggle, he also managed to obtain a degree in law from the Government Law College. So, he was B.A.’, L.L.B.
Finally, on January 15, 1937, with the help of his close friend Mr. Nayampalli, a veteran character actor, he managed to land himself his first role in a movie. The movie was Zambo and it was being produced and directed by Mohan Bhavnani who was the Chief Producer of the Films Division of the Government Of India.
The role was that of an old man. David had sported ” Ërol Flynn” like moustache, which he had to shave off and put on a grey moustache and beard for the role. Thus his first role itself was of an old man. His second role in the film Double cross-38 was also of a senior Professor.
From 1937 to 1940 he was working in Bhavnani Productions in different capacities like Prodn. Manager, continuity clerk, Assistant Director, Clapper Boy, Telephone operator and as an Actor. He lost his job on 1-2-1940 and started work on a freelance basis.
David was actively associated with IPTA, a theatre organization and went on to be part of many Khwaja Ahmed Abbas’s films, including, Palme dór nominee Pardesi (1957),Shehar aur Sapna (1963), which won the 1964 National Award for Best Feature Film, Munaa and Char Dil Char Raahein.
Strongly associated with friendly uncle roles, David is best known for his portrayal of “John Chacha” in the 1954 hit and FilmFare Best Film Award winner and Palme dór nominee, Boot Polish, directed by Prakash Arora, for which he won the 1955 Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. The song “Nanhe Munne Bachche” from the film, picturized on him became a memorable song of that era.
In his prime, in the period 1959-1975, David was one of the best and the well-known anchors, Compère and a host of prominent award shows and other functions. In one of the speeches Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister, had said that any events of such nature would surely be incomplete without David’s speech.
He was involved in promoting sports, and later became India’s Olympic Games representative He was awarded the Padma Shri award in 1969 by the Government of India.
His last film was Pavitra Ganga-84, released after his death. He never married and died on 2 January 1982 in Toronto, Canada of a heart attack at the age of 73.
The story of the film Lajawab-1950 was….
Roma is a spoiled, pampered daughter of a rich businessman. She thinks that money can buy everything. Once, while driving through a nearby village, she kills a goat under her car. Saloni, the owner, comes there. Roma offers her money as compensation. There is a hot discussion between the two. Finding Roma a heartless person, Saloni curses her that she will never get true love in life till she knows what it is.
Roma is engaged to rich Sohan. But unfortunately, Sohan incurs loss in business and becomes a pauper. Roma breaks her engagement and gets engaged to his cousin Ramesh, who is very wealthy. Kailash,a true lover of Roma, is spurned by her and goes away to Africa. Sohan, dejected, leaves the town and goes to a nearby village where he meets Saloni and love develops between the two. On the day of marriage or Roma, her groom Ramesh dies in an accident. All his wealth goes to Sohan and he becomes rich again.
Meanwhile Kailash comes back. Now he has become a millionaire. He once again proposes to Roma. Roma realises her mistake and also remembers Saloni’s curse. She and Kailash go to Saloni, who advises her to understand the value of life, money and love. Roma repents.
Finally Sohan and Saloni and Kailash and Roma reunite.
