‘Subhadra Haran’ (1964) was a Hindi dubbed version of the Marathi film of the same name which was produced by Homi Wadia under the banner of Basant Pictures and Wadia Brothers. The film was directed by Datta Dharmadhikari. The cast included Jayshree Gadkar in the title role with Suryakant as Arjun in the lead roles supported by Sahu Modak (as Krishna), Arun Sarnaik, Chitra, Raja Nene, Balakram, Vasant Shinde, Ram Tipnis, Madhu Apte etc.

Unfortunately, the VCD of the Hindi version of the film is not available. However, the VCD of the Marathi version of the film is available on a video sharing platform. Subhadra Haran is a well-known story in Mahabharat epic. The essence of the story is that Duryodhana has asked Balram for his sister, Subhadra’s hand in marriage. Balram has assured him that he would plead his case with her parents. Meanwhile, Arjun has reached Dwarka where he falls in love with Subhadra and Subhadra reciprocates his love. Krishna knew that Arjun was interested in marrying Subhadra. But he also knew that Balram was interested in Subhadra marrying with Duryodhana. Krishna suggests to Arjun that if he is interested in marrying Subhadra, he has to elope with her to a far-off place and get married. Arjuna does that for which Balram gets furious and wanted to send his army to capture Arjun. But Krishna convinces him that Subhadra had gone with Arjun on her own accord and their marriage has blessings from Gods.

The songs for the Hindi version of the film were composed by Prabhakar Jog, a well-known violinist. In the Marathi version of the film, the songs of the Marathi version of the film were composed by Vasant Pawar and Prabhakar Jog was assisting him. However, when the last two songs were to be composed, Vasant Pawar was urgently called by Anant Mane, Marathi film director to Kolhapur. So, the remaining two songs of the Marathi version were composed by Prabhakar Jog who continued as music director for the songs of the Hindi version of the film. In a way, he debuted as music director in films without any real intention. But this opportunity opened up more offers from the Marathi film producers. In this way, he ended up as a music director for as many as 22 Marathi films. However, playing violin remained his preferred vocation.

Prabhakar Jog (25/12/1932 – 31/10/2021) was born in Haregaon in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. From his childhood, Prabhakar Jog was interested in music. He took training in Hindustani classical vocal music from Pandit. Gajananrao Joshi and Pandit. Narayanrao Marulkar for about six years. So, his early interest was for becoming a vocalist. His father was the general manager of a sugar factory in Shrirampur afte which he changed the job and shifted to Pune in 1939. When his father was posted to Vishkhapatnam, he met with an accident and died when Jog was 12 years of age.

Prabhakar Jog veered toward becoming a violinist when his elder brother, Vamanrao Jog, who was earlier working in All India Radio, Indore, started conducting violin classes in their house after he left the job. Prabhakar Jog would always be present to watch his elder brother’s violin classes. Thus, he develops interest in playing violin. During the same period, he got inspired from the violin recitals of a well-known Violinist, Shridhar Parsekar, which he used to listen on AIR Pune. His music inspired Jog into learning the instrument and started taking lessons in violin from his brother.

With the death of his father in 1944, playing violin which he developed as a hobby became a bread-earning for the family. From his school days itself, Prabhakar Jog started his violin concerts during festivals and some private shows. He became accompanists to well-known singers like Gajananrao Watwe, Rohini Bhate, Malti Pande etc. He played his violin for the first time for a Marathi film, ‘Gurudevdatt’ (1951) under music director, Snehal Bhatkar.

After joining S P College in Pune for his graduation in 1950, he performed in college’s annual social gathering which was held in College’s open premises. His violin concert was so popular that by students’ demand, his performance was repeated in the evening session which continued till midnight. Sudhir Phadke, who stayed very closed to the college, heard his violin concert from his residence. He was so impressed with his violin playing that he invited Prabhakar Jog to his residence and offered him to join his musical team as a violinist, which he gladly accepted. Subsequently, when Sudhir Phadke witnessed his proficiency in writing the musical notations, he was promoted as his music assistant.

When the Geet Ramayan of Sudhir Phadke and G D Madgulkar combination was being aired from All India Radio, Pune in 1955-56 on every Sunday for 56 weeks, Prabhakar Jog not only worked as a violin accompanist to Sudhir Phadke, he became the Assistant Music Director and arranger for the series. It is said that he independently composed three songs for the series and composed musical pieces for over 40 songs in this series. When the Geet Ramayan series became extremely popular, Prabhakar accompanied Sudhir Phadke for more than 500 live shows all over Maharashtra and the other parts of India with a sizeable Marathi speaking population.

Prabhakar Jog composed his first song in Marathi, ‘lapawilaas tu hirwaa chaafaa, sugandh tyaachaa chhapel kaa? (you have hidden the green Champa flower. Can the fragrance of that hide?). There is an interesting trivia as to how he got his first song as a music director. His newly married wife, Neela Jog was selected as a singer during the audition on AIR, Pune and she was asked to sing her first song on AIR, Pune. Normally, the staff composer of AIR would have composed the song for her. However, she desired that her first song to be aired on AIR, Pune should be composed by her husband. This song became extremely popular. In 1956, HMV got this song recorded in the voice of Malti Pande. Even the present generation of Marathi singers render this song regularly.

After having worked with Sudhir Phadke as his music assistant and with his knowledge of music notations, Prabhakar Jog was in demand to assist music directors of Marathi films like Vasant Pawar, Vasant Prabhu, Ram Kadam, Shrinivas Khale, Yeshwant Deo, Dashrath Pujari etc. Prabhakar Jog’s first assignment as an independent music director was a Marathi film, ‘Jawai Maaza Bhala’ (1962). He went on composing songs for 22 Marathi films, many of which were box office hits.

Prabhakar Jog shifted his base from Pune to Mumbai in 1962 when he was noticed as an excellent violinist by the music directors of Hindi films. He had regularly played violin for Madan Mohan until his last film, ‘Laila Majnu’ (1976). He worked with other contemporary music directors like Roshan, S. D. Burman, O P Nayyar, Shankar-Jaikishan, Khayyam, Jaidev, Usha Khanna, Ravindra Jain, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and with the new generation of music directors like Nadeem-Shravan, Rajesh Roshan and Anu Malik. He was the music assistant to Jaidev in ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (1962), ‘Ham Dono’ (1962) and ‘Kinaare Kinaare (1963). During his 35 years of stay in Mumbai, Prabhakar Jog worked with over 85 music directors of Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and Bhojpuri films. He was the President of the Cine Musician’s Association for 3 years during 1986 to 1988.

Prabhakar Jog was known as a performer of ‘gaanaare violin’ (singing violin). Towards the later part of his life, he mainly concentrated on his violin recitals by way of stage shows with catchy names such as ‘Swar Aale Dururni’ ( musical notes have come from afar) which was the first line of a non-film Marathi song composed by him. In this programme, he presented the vocal renditions of the popular film and non-film songs composed by him. He has also presented stage shows, ‘Gaanaare Violin’ and its Hindi counterpart, ‘Gaata Rahe Mera Violin’ in which he played popular Marathi and Hindi film songs on his violin. Such was his mastery over violin that the audience used to feel that the singers themselves were singing the songs through his violin. Video clips of some of the songs he played on violin are available on video sharing platforms.

Prabhakar Jog was bestowed with many awards which included Maharashtra State Government’s Lata Mangeshkar Life Time Achievement Award (2015), Sur Singaar Award, G D Madgulkar Award, Zee TV’s Life Time Achievement Award (2019) etc.

Prabhakar Jog passed away on October 31, 2021, in Pune due to old age-related health issues at a ripe age of 88. His son and grandchildren are musicians and singers. (Note: The profile of Prabhakar Jog is mainly based on his interview broadcasted on AIR, Pune under the programme, ‘Ase Baharle Sur’).

‘Subhadra Haran’ (1964) had six songs written by Saraswati Kumar Deepak which were set to music by Prabhakar Jog. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘nayan baawre hone lage’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor. The song is picturised on Jaishree Gadkar and Suryakant.

The context of the song is that Arjun (Suryakant) is on his way to Dwarka after hearing the news of Subhadra’s impending marriage with Duryodhan. Before that Krishna has created an illusion of a demon who abducts Subhadra during the pre-wedding rituals of Duryodhan and drops her in the forest on the same path where Arjun is walking towards Dwarka. Arjun is surprised to find Subhadra on his way to Dwarka. She reveals as to what has happened during the wedding rituals. Arjun says that perhaps that demon has done a favour for us that we have met. They look at each other and the melodious song in pure Hindi lyrics follows.

Prabhakar Jog had used the voices of Suman Kalyanpur and Sudhir Phadke for the Marathi version of this song with the first line of the mukhda, ‘baghat rahu de tujhaa kade’ (Subhadra looking at Krishna says ‘let me watch you continuously). The perfect Hindi word (not literal translation) for Marathi word ‘Baghat’ in the context of the song is निहारु. But Saraswati Kumar Deepak, probably to match the metre of the song in Hindi, has given slighlty different meaning of the first line as Subhadra’s ‘eyes lost in dream’ after seeing Krishna because she is unexpectedly meeting him after a long time.

Wah! for the Marathi lyrics by Shantaram Athawale and for Hindi lyrics by Saraswati Kumar Deepak which conveys the simple and emotive romance keeping in view the period.
