Today’s song is from the first film of Filmistan Studio – Chal Chal Re Naujawan -1944.
A group of disgruntled employees – actors, directors, technicians etc -left their parent company studio, Bombay Talkies, in 1942 and established their own studio- Filmistan. In the year 1942, they were not the first or the only people to leave their parent studio and start their own ventures. There were many like them.
Some examples are….
1. Mehboob Khan left National Studio and started his own Mehboob productions.
2. A.R.Kardar started his own Kardar Studio.
3. V.Shantaram, with his followers left Prabhat Film co. and started his own Rajkamal Chitra Mandir.
4. Homi Wadia left his Wadia Movietone to start his own Basant Pictures.
K.L.Saigal left New Theatres and joined Ranjit in Bombay.
Apart from this, many artistes started started their Hindi film careers, like Vasant Desai, C.Ramchandra, Kamal Dasgupta, Manna Dey, Ninu majumdar, Ramesh Gupta, Qamar Jalalabadi, Suraiya, Hemant Kumar, Jagmohan Sursagar, Nurjahan, Bharat Bhushan, Madhubala etc.
These happenings had a lasting impact on the film industry. Infact, it all changed completely. It was like a snake shedding its old skin and shining more brightly !
The title of the first film of Filmistan was based on the very popular song of Ashok Kumar ” Chal Chal re Naujawan” from the film Bandhan-1940. Ashok Kumar was the trump card of Filmistan. He was the most popular actor of Hindi films in those years. His exit from Bombay Talkies, coupled with Himnshu Rai’s death and Devika Rani’s exit after her marriage broke the spine of Bombay Talkies and within a few more years it collapsed and shut off ultimately !
The regular Music Director of Bombay Talkies, Saraswati Devi had not joined the splinter group for Filmistan. She too left Bombay Talkies and became a freelancer. Due to this, Filmistan had to look for another MD for their first film. During that period, it was rumoured that Master Ghulam Haider, who became the composer who broke Hindi films from the clutches of theatre style music, with his Punjabi style songs in film Khazanchi-1941, was planning to shift lock, stock and barrel to Bombay. Filmistan grabbed this opportunity with both hands to invite him to be the M.D for their first film Chal Chal Re Naujawan-1944. Thus with this film Ghulam Haider entered the Bombay film industry.
In this film, Ashok Kumar not only acted as a Hero, but also sang 6 songs in the film. Overall, the music and songs of this film certainly did not fulfil the expectations of Filmistan, from Ghulam Haider. Only one song of Ashok Kumar, “Bolo Har Har Mahadev” became popular.
The film was directed by Gyan Mukherjee. Gyan Mukherjee (30 September 1909 – 13 November 1956) was a film director & screenwriter, who worked in Hindi cinema, most known for his films Jhoola and Kismet. Kismet (1943) was severely criticised for glorifying crime and portraying a criminal in good light. Despite the criticism, the movie shattered all box office records, becoming the first Indian movie to gross ₹. One crore at the box office. It ran for 187 continuous weeks at Roxy Cinema in Calcutta, a record that stood for 32 years.
Gyan Mukherjee was born on 30 September 1909 in Benares, United Provinces in Undivided India now Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. He graduated with a degree in science.
Gyan Mukherjee started his career with New Theatres in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and subsequently joined Bombay Talkies as a supervising technician. Soon he became a trendsetter of “formula film” starting with first directorial venture Geeta (1940) based on the theme, “Crime-doesn’t-pay”, “Boy meets girl” was used in Jhoola (1941).
In 1943, Gyan Mukherjee reused the formula of Geeta to direct the biggest hit of his career, Kismet (1943), which also added another formula of “lost-and-found”, which remained popular for several decades in Hindi films. The film had Ashok Kumar, the leading star of the era, playing an anti-hero and also appearing in a double role. The film had a strong-anti British sentiment and also featured the noted patriotic song, “Door hato O Duniya walon, Hindustan Hamara Hai” (Leave People of World, India is Ours) by Kavi Pradeep, & went on to run at Roxy Cinema in Calcutta for 3 years and 8 months. Subhash K. Jha has called Kismet ” one of the most influential films of all times” in Indian cinema.
After death of Himanshu Rai, founder of Bombay Talkies Studio in 1940, a group led by producer Sashadhar Mukherjee along with production controller Rai Bahadur Chunnilal, actor Ashok Kumar & Mukherjee, broke away to establish the Filmistan studio in March 1943 at the premises of old Sharada Movietone studios in Goregaon, Mumbai. He retouched the concept of anti-hero in Sangram (1950), today his works are seen as early depictions of the underworld and the anti-hero in Indian cinema.
While working at Bombay Talkies, amateur Guru Dutt trained under him, though he also assisted Amiya Chakravarty, Dutt emulated Mukherjee’s formula-based film style in his early films and eventually dedicated his classic, Pyaasa (1957) to Gyan Mukherjee, Another noted director, who assisted him at Bombay Talkies, was Shakti Samanta, who later made Aradhana (1969) & Amar Prem (1972).
Though Amiya Chakrawarty and Gyan Mukherjee wrote the screenplay for the film ” Punarmilan”-1940, they were never comfortable with each other. After the split in Bombay Talkies, when Gyan Mukherjee went with the opposition group, their competition increased since now both were directors. When the other group started work on Kismet, with Anil Biswas as MD, Amiya also started Basant, with the same Heroine- Mumtaz Shanti- and Anil Biswas incognito with Pannalal Ghosh as a Front.
Even after Bombay Talkies closed down , their competition continued. When Amiya did Baadal-51, based on the same story, Gyan Mukherjee made the film Shamsheer-53 ( originally this film was made by Sargam films, but Bombay Talkies purchased its rights and released it.) Further in 1957, both started a film each with the same Heroine-Vyjayantimala. Amiya did Kathputli-57, but he died before this film was completed and Nitin Bose completed the remaining film. Similarly Gyan Mukherjee started the film Sitaron se aagey, but he too died before the film was completed. After some time Satyen Bose was commissioned to complete the film, thus delaying its release in 1958. Their competition ended only after their deaths !
Gyan Mukherjee directed only 9 films. Two films, namely, Madhu-59 and Sitaron se Aage-58 were completed by Directors S. Mukherjee and Satyen Bose respectively, after his sudden death during these films. Except the film Madhu-59, Gyan directed only films having Ashok Kumar as Hero.( His brother Shanker Mukherjee, likewise was known to be a Dev Anand Director except Jhumroo-61.) Gyan Mujherjee died on 13 November 1956 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), at the age of 47. Guru Dutt’s “Kaagaz Ke Phool” (1959) is considered to be a homage to Mukherjee.
The popular Comedian V.H.Desai, from the Bombay Talkies had also joined Filmistan, as he was a favourite of Ashok Kumar. V.H.Desai made his debut with the film Capt. Kirti Kumar-1937.He was a famous and extremely popular Comedian from late 30s to 40s.He was a law Graduate from Baroda, but instead of courts, opted for films.his style was typical-fast delivery of dialogues. He was very poor in remembering Dialogues and required many retakes. As per Ashok kumar,in one of the Bombay Talkies films(Kangan),he took as many as 75 retakes. The German Director Franz Osten was so furious that he told Desai ” if you were not so popular a comedian in India,I would have thrown you out long back” !
Starting with Sagar Movietone, he did Capt. Kirti Kumar, and then joined Bombay talkies( Bhabhi, Navjeevan, Jhoola, Kangan, Naya Sansar, Kismet etc). He acted in initial films of Filmistan, from where he was taken by P L Santoshi for Shehnai and Khidki. Later he did Shaheed and Andaz. In Andaz-49 he did the funny role of DDT-i.e. prof.Devdas Dharamdas Trivedi. The role was specially written for him. In all he did 19 films only.
Desai died of a heart attack on 25-1-1949.
Let us now enjoy today’s 81 year old song by Ashok Kumar and chorus….
