Playback singer and composer Sharda passed away on 14 June 2023. On her Remembrance Day today, I bring this post as a tribute in continuation to the recent two posts wherein Mukesh’s association under her compositions and a co-singer in their duets were covered.
Links to the two posts are provided below for reader’s ready reference.
• Mukesh and his Co-Singers –14
• Mukesh and his Composers – 35
There is nothing much to add from my knowledge to whatever I have already covered in my two aforesaid posts. But then, when I start writing, I keep writing. 😊
So, here we go again.
It is well known that Raj Kapoor first heard Sharda’s voice when he was on a visit to Tehran for a concert. Sharda had settled there when Raj Kapoor upon hearing her voice asked her to come back to India to make a career out of singing.
Upon his suggestion, she did come to India and then what’s her tally of released songs in RK films?
Well, its nil.
More about it in a while.
In India, Raj Kapoor is said to have arranged for her training and also recommended her to his composers Shankar-Jaikishan. I have discussed the hyphen in my earlier posts. 😊
After about a year of training, she sang her first songs for the film Suraj (1966).
How she ended up making her debut for Suraj (1966) which had no trace of RK productions, is not clear to me. Anyway, she created film history with her co-winning status of FF award for best playback singer with Rafi saab. The historical aspects of her award winning song in Suraj have been described in detail in my previous posts.
Based on the immense popularity of her songs in Suraj (1966), especially the nursery rhymed “Titli Udi”, Sharda started singing for a few composers and especially Shanker Jaikishan.
Then came RK films Mera Naam Joker (1970) which was sans Lata for the first time after Barsaat (1949). Was this to do with Lata’s dissatisfaction with “Main kaa Karoon ram mujhe buddha mil gaya” in Sangam (1964) or the fact that composers had started offering more songs to Sharda or some other factors is debatable.
Raj Kapoor who had brought Sharda to India was also not in favour of her songs in Mera Naam Joker. So, it is said that he allowed Shankar to record 3 songs of Sharda in the film but never picturized them thus leading to first major and visible crack in the great team.
Something similar happened again with Kal Aaj aur Kal (1971). One song was recorded in the voice of Sharda and was probably shot also as it is believed it was excluded after the film’s release. This is said to be due to some misunderstanding between debut director Randhir Kapoor and Shankar of SJ fame. The song was eventually removed from the film. So, Sharda’s name is very much included in the credit titles but she has no song in the film. In fact, this was the last film of SJ for RK films and moreover Jaikishan too had passed away in the same year of 1971 at a young age of just 41. To digress matters, but to remember the great composer, here is my post.
Thus, Sharda ended her career with no released song for RK Films. And to reiterate, she was made to come back to India by Raj Kapoor himself.
Readers may well argue that there are few songs of Raj Kapoor songs with Sharda as playback singer in films like Diwana and Around the world both released in 1967. But, please note that such films were released by some other production houses and not RK Films.
Thus, in my mini thesis of this trilogy on Sharda, I have discovered and concluded that Sharda has no released song for RK films. I never came across this important and unfortunate aspect in any of the articles, blogs etc. so far.
Coming to the song selection of Sharda for this post, many of her popular songs are already covered on the blog. A few of her notable songs are on her wiki page. She has several hit songs in many films which have performed exceptionally well on the box-office.
Glancing through her songs, I was pleasantly surprised to know that she is Rafi saab’s co-singer in the duet from Seema (1971). Though I was aware of this song, I had not paid particular attention regarding her association with it.
What a great song it is!
I do not remember watching the video earlier, but then, during the making of this post, I watched and then heard the song multiple times thereafter.
Again, to detour, I could not help sharing a few thoughts on the audio-visual treats of this duet.
Rafi saab’s voice seems sort of “labored” in the song. I am not sure if it is because of the lyrics or the pace of the song. Or, maybe, I am wrong is my assessment too.
In the song, Simi Grewal is sans her famous lustrous hair and is made to wear a large inappropriate wig which looks much bigger on her small diamond shaped face.
And, Kabir Bedi is clean shaved and without his famous facial hair.
Simi Grewal sitting on the sill of a window overlooking the hills at the beginning of the song is such a great scene. In fact, her gracious stroll in the room and outside, the twirls, slight tilt of her head and to rest it on her almost clasped palms, the enigmatic gaze into eternity, her quick deep breath with her trademark smile when Gulzar saab repeats
“thandi aahon mein saans jalti ho” are all a pleasure to watch.
Though Sharda does not get an opportunity to sing her own lines in the song, the beautiful humming of the mukhda and subsequent unison singing with Rafi saab has made this duet into an all-time favourite of many including yours truly. I momentarily had this thought that Sharda ought to have been given her independent lines in the duet but then the composer is the best judge.
What can be stated as a matter of fact is that the melody, sweetness and popularity of the song has been enriched by the contributions of Sharda.
Well, I could write on and on, but this song is not my post as it is already covered. 😊
So, to conclude, I was left with selecting a suitable song for the day. I listened to many uncovered solo songs of Sharda but did not like them. Then, I ran though her 9 composed films.
Lo and behold, I found a great duet of Sharda with none other than Yesudas. I am not sure if this is their only duet. I would request knowledgeable readers to comment on the same.
Today’s song is from the film Hazaar Haath. One song from this film has been covered on the blog and as such the details of the film can be found in the same.
This particular duet that I am covering today, was a pleasant discovery for me.
The genre of today’s song?
Well, please listen to the song and conclude for yourself. I am sure readers will love the duet.
Sharda with her songs and the 9 films that she composed music will be fondly remembered in the annals of Indian film music.
