‘Yauwan’ (1973) was a psychological suspense thriller film produced by N P Singh and was directed by Ranjan Bose who also wrote story and screenplay. Cast included Anil Dhawan, Yogita Bali, Sujit Kumar, Mohan Choti, Sajjan, Poornima, Ashoo, Rajnibala, Janakidas, Ratan Gurang, Rajpal etc. Kabir Bedi had a small role of a deaf and dumb Gardner. This was the first film for Ranjan Bose as a director. He has prominently worked with Shakti Samanta as story and screenplay writer.

I have neither heard of this film nor have heard any of its songs. I have read a brief synopsis of the film in which I felt that the story of the film is broadly in line with ‘Khaamoshi’ (1969) in reverse order. In this film, the patient is a girl and the psychiatrist falls in love with the patient. Another difference is that the patient is not in a hospital all the time. The film is available on one of the video sharing platforms and I have watched the film. Unfortunately, the main theme of the story has been mixed with the usual box office ingredients by adding a couple of unnecessary sub-plots, making the film’s story go haywire.

The story of the film in details is as under:

Shashi (Yogita Bali) has returned home after her release from the mental hospital. She was suffering from depression on account of something that had happened in her life when she was a teenager. She gets a temporary relapse of depression and faints whenever she sees rose flowers and lightning in the sky or even the disco lighting in the club. Her mother (Purnima) tells others in the house that as per the doctor’s advice, Shashi should not be reminded of her past illness and she should be kept in good humour. Gyani (Mohan Choti) with his wits and repartees entertains Shashi and keeps her mind diverted from her past.

As a means of diversion, Gyani takes Shashi to meet her friends in the club. But except offering formal courtesy, she avoids socialising with them. Gyani introduces Shashi to Club’s Secretary, Roop (Sujit Kumar) who falls in love with her at the first sight. Gyani cautions him that Shashi is a different type of a girl whom he cannot bring her under his spell. He accepts Gyani’s challenge.

One day, Roop suggests to Shashi that she should give her singing performance in the club. She refuses by saying that she has lost touch with her singing. Somehow Roop convinces Shashi’s mother the importance of her participation in the club’s programme and she in turn convinces Shashi to give her the singing performance. After the completion of her singing performances, Shashi is in her green room when she suddenly feels that there is a storm outside. She falls unconscious. She is admitted in a nursing home under the care of Dr. Prem (Anil Dhawan), a psychiatrist. He wants to give her counselling before she is discharged. But Shashi refuses to cooperate by telling him that she is alright and leaves her room.

Prem feels that Shashi needs urgent counselling. So, he decides to pursue her in a different manner. He meets her in the club as if he has come on a casual visit. But each time he meets her he fails to initiate conversation with her on her problems which she is unable to explain. Roop on the other hand continues to pursue Shashi but she does not allow him to take any liberty with her. With constant meetings with Dr. Prem, Shashi has developed a liking for him.

Dr. Prem has a girlfriend, Reeta (Ashoo), who believes in the maxim ‘enjoy the life with friends but finally marry a right person’ and she has already decided that Dr Prem is a right choice for her. At Reeta’s birthday party at a hotel, Dr Prem goes to wish her with a bouquet. But he finds her in a room with one of her boyfriends in an intimate way. Arguments erupt between them on her behaviour particularly when they are going to marry. Shashi has come to meet Dr Prem to reveal to him that she is in love with him. However, after hearing the conversations between Prem and Reeta, she believes that Dr. Prem has already decided on his life partner. She is in a sombre mood and decides to return home without meeting Dr Prem.

While Shashi is returning home, Roop meets her on the way and tells her that he has decided to marry her. Shashi says that she would require time to think it over. He tells her to meet later in the evening when she can tell about her decision. At home, Shashi reveals to her mother about Roop’s marriage proposal. Mother is happy that at least somebody is ready to marry her daughter.

Shashi meets Roop in the evening and tells him that before he agrees to marry her, he should read the note which she has written about her past events which led to her depression. Roop reads the note and sees an opportunity to sexually exploit her instead of marrying her by blackmailing her with her secrets. He attempts to molest her when Shashi draws a revolver from her purse and fires at him. Roop falls on the ground. In panic, Shashi runs away and reaches home. She tells the police who have come for investigation that she has killed Roop. She has a relapse of severe depression. Her mother calls Dr Prem. Shashi is admitted to a hospital. Police have come to arrest her. But due to her mental health, she is not arrested but she is kept under police watch in the hospital.

One day, Shashi runs away from the hospital to commit suicide. However, with Dr Prem reaching in time, Shashi is saved. While returning with him, she sees a bunch of rose flower plants. She starts behaving irrationally. After controlling her, Dr Prem insists on her to reveal her past which he feels is the root cause of her depression. He tells her that whatever may be her past secrets, if she shares with him, it will greatly help her to recover from the periodic relapse of depression. He also reveals to her that he is in love with her and he has decided to marry her irrespective of her past secrets. She starts narrating her past secrets.

She was brought up in a liberal atmosphere. So, as a teenager, she often visited night clubs and spent time with her boyfriends. Her gardener, (Kabir Bedi) used to offer her fresh rose flowers from their garden every day. Slowly, she started getting infatuated with him, which led to affairs with him. She inwardly felt guilty of submitting herself to him. One day, Gardner was showing his inclination to meet in her room when there was a storm with thunder and lightning. But she did not respond positively. Soon, a huge tree fell on him killing the Gardner instantly. Because of these incidents, she developed a guilty consciousness which resulted in her going into depression.

Having revealed her secret past, Shashi feels comfortable. But soon she receives a telephone call asking her to come with money failing which the caller would reveal her secrets. But she has already revealed her past secret and now she is not worried. But Dr Pal tells her to follow the caller to know who the person is. When they reach the given address, the caller is none other than Roop. Actually, when Shashi had fired the shot at him, the bullet did not hit him but he acted as dead to avoid her further shot at him. After a long fight between Dr Pal and Roop, a police team arrives and arrests Roop. Shashi begins her new inning with Dr Prem without the burden of her past secrets.

The film had five songs written by Omkar Verma which were set to music by Sonik-Omi. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song from the film, ‘ye reshmee andheraa lut jaane do’ rendered by Asha Bhosle. It is a club song.

The context of the song is that Shashi (Yogita Bali) who has just recovered from depression is requested by Roop (Sujit Kumar) to present her singing performance in a club where he is the secretary. It is a part of his plan to attract her toward him. She refuses by saying that she has lost touch with her singing for a long time, However, her mother has convinced her to agree to the request of Roop thinking that it would divert her mind. Yogita Bali sings the song with a dark background which is symbolic of her depressed mind visualsing everything dark around her life due to some past events.

The melodic patterns in the song gives an impression that it has been composed by one of the Bengali music directors of Hindi films.

khushiyon ke rahte hain
lab pe afsaane
oho o ho

kuchh bahkaa hai mausam

kal jaane ho naa ho
mausam aawaaraa
o ho o ho
aha aha
ye nazaaraa
ye nazaaraa
hai saathh pyaaraa
kal jaane ho naa ho
mausam aawaaraa
gun-gunaa lo
geet gaa lo
girne do
dil kee kaliyon pe shabnam
ye…ae reshmee andheraa
lut jaane kaa aalam
ho o o o o
ye ae reshmee andheraa
lut jaane kaa aalam
ho o
chalnaa sambhal ke
kuchh bahkaa hai mausam
aa aa aa
ye……ae reshmee andheraa
andheraa
