Hullo Atuldom
June 22nd 1965, a young ‘approximately’ 18 year old girl, from a small town in Andhra Pradesh, got married and relocated to the metropolitan city called Bombay. After about 23 years, another young girl ‘approximately’ 22 years old, from Bombay got married & relocated to an ‘even more’ small (i.e. smaller than the Andhra Pradesh town mentioned in the opening sentence) town in Tamil Nadu. I mean a case of ‘ulti Ganga’. But we shall not talk of the second girl in this post, the subject of this post is the first girl.
So, the marriage that happened in 1965 was between a girl brought up in Andhra Pradesh to a boy brought up in Gujarat & working in Bombay. The bride & the groom’s families were originally from Kerala, but for occupational reasons they had shifted out. There were a lot of similarities between the basic culture of the families and also the groom was very helpful in helping his bride settle down into her new environment. Specially, since she was still a student at the time of her wedding. He was her coach in all matters and in a span of two-three years she managed to pick up even the (alien to her) languages of Hindi & Gujarati. All other things related to family life just fell in place and the couple lived a long love-filled life of almost 50 years till they bid goodbye to this world.
It would have been their 60th anniversary today. I think I have found a song that will fit the occasion aptly. It is from the 11th February 2000 released, Raj Kanwar directed “Badal” (as is written in the title card of the film. I know ‘Badal’ can mean ‘CHANGE’ but the filmmaker has used this spelling to mean ‘CLOUD’)
“Badal” had Bobby Deol, Rani Mukherjee as the lead pair with Amrish Puri leading the supporting cast of Ashish Vidyarthi, Ashutosh Rana, Neena Kulkarni, Mayuri Kango, Sana Saeed, Upasana Singh, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Dina Pathak, Alok Nath, Johnny Lever, Harish Patel etc. Suman Ranganathan & Mink Brar have guest appearances as dancers in two songs. The music director of the film was Anu Malik with Aadesh Shrivastava in-charge of the background score. The playback singers used for the 7 songs were Sukhwinder Singh, Anuradha Paudwal, Jaspinder Narula, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Sapna Awasthi, Anmol Malik, Dominique Cerejo & Anu Malik (himself). Sameer was the lyricist.
The film was a story of a young boy, who witnesses his entire family being massacred by a corrupt police officer (Ashutosh Rana). He is looked after by his father’s friend (Ashish Vidyarthi) who himself is on the run from the law. The boy grows up in to a young man (Bobby Deol) and has joined a terrorist group. His only aim in life is to exact revenge for the atrocities that his family had faced. He come to a beautiful town where a good-natured ACP (Amrish Puri) takes him under his wings, introduces the lad to his family and as a bonus the daughter (Rani Mukherjee) of a family friend falls in love with him. The rest the film shows how Bobby Deol reaches his goal.
The song in the voices of Anmol Malik, Jaspinder Narula, Sukhwinder Singh & Anuradha Paudwal; has Amrish Puri & Neena Kulkarni celebrating their anniversary along-with friends and family. We can see Mayuri Kango & Sana Saeed who play their daughters, Rani Mukherjee, and a host of actors from the cast joining the fun.
Incidentally, 22nd June is also the birth anniversary of Mogambo a.k.a Amrish Puri. He would have been 93. He is an actor who’s career in films began in 1970 with a role in ‘Prem Pujari’. His last film was ‘Kachchi Sadak’ in 2006. His AI generated image was used in ‘Gadar 2’ a sequel of the hit 2001 Sunny Deol starrer ‘Gadar- Ek Prem Katha’.
In a career spanning around 40 years (if we consider the fact that he was doing plays before his film career took-off, he had acted in around 450 films in Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam & Marathi. He mostly played characters with grey shades for a major part of his career. This changed around the mid-1990s when he played father to Kajol in “Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge”. He was very often seen shaking a leg, even as a villain, with his baritone voice often uttering a few words in between.
Thinking of this versatile actor with this song.
