Blog Day :

Today, 20th June, 2022 is the birthday of our Respected Dear Atul ji. On this occasion we wish him a very happy birthday and a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and ‘full of musical life’ ahead. . .

Previously while selecting a song for this occasion we were specially looking for songs having ‘geet, safar, gaanaa, gaata chal, gaaye jaa, gungunaata chal, gaata chalaa gaya, etc. and words like these and/or similar words like these woven in a ‘philosophical’ song set up to convey the ‘musical journey’ of Atul ji and this blog. However today I am presenting a totally different song to celebrate this occasion with a rocking song and music, once again in a ‘Jat Yamla’ style. 😀

Also today I will not repeat again what I usually like to mention about Atul ji and my feelings for him and feelings for the blog. I would only like that today he listens to and enjoys this song presented with this post here 🙂

I would once again say ‘Many Happy Returns of the Day to Atul ji’ and move forward to today’s song and its movie.

Today’s song is from the ‘1999’ movie ‘Dillagi’. Today this movie is making its debut on the blog. This film was produced and directed by Sunny Deol for his home production company Vijayta Films. It was presented by Dharmendra.

The movie has Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Urmila Matondkar, Dara Singh, Zohra Sehgal, Harish Patel, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Reema, Vijay Kashyap, Sushmita Mukherjee, Deepshikha, Vaibhavi Raut, Rajshri Solanki, Dimple Inamdar, Goldie Choudhary, Raj Zutshi, Alistar Woodham, Pervinder Gujral, Kanika Shivpuri, Tora Khasgir, Narinder Kaur, Shefali Ganguly, Mac Singh, Raspal Virdee, Steve Nijjar, Bebz Jetha, Col. Kapoor, Jasbir Thandi, Prakash Agarwal, Nirmal, Master Anand, Master Mayank, Master Deepak, Master Arbaaz, and others. New actors introduced in this movie are Praveen Dabas, Amrik Randhawa, Apsara Iyengar, Denise Butler. The movie also has Surekha Sikri in a Guest Apprearance and Preity Zinta in a Special Appearance.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Sutanu Gupta. Dialogues of this movie were written by Sanjay Masoom. Editing of this movie was done by Keshav Naidu. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.11.1999.

This movie has as many as eleven songs . Lyrics for this movie are written by Javed Akhtar, Sukhwinder Singh, and Tejpal Kaur. Music for this movie is composed by Jatin-Lalit, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sukhwinder Singh, and Anand-Milind. We will know more about this movie in the future when the other songs of this movie are discussed on the blog.

Lyricist for the today’s song is Sukhwinder Singh who has also composed this song. The singing voices are Mahendra Kapoor, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh, Mridula Desai, Mohini Brahmabhatt and chorus. It is picturised on Sunny Deol, Dara Singh, Bobby Deol, Zohra Sehgal and many other artists are also present there during the picturisation of this song.

Let us now listen to the today’s song and welcome this musical movie on the blog.

Once again wishing our Atul ji a very happy birthday today !!!

Blog Day :

4631 Post No. : 16285 Movie Count :

Today 23rd March 2021 is the ninetieth remembrance anniversary of martyr dome of Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. They were hanged to death by the British regime on 23rd March 1931.

On this occasion as a tribute in remembrance of these great sons of this soil here is a song from the movie ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ (2002).

As I had mentioned in my earlier post on the blog, in the year 2002 there were three movies released on the life of Bhagat Singh;

  • 23rd March 1931 Shaheed
  • The Legend of Bhagat Singh
  • Shaheed-E-Azam

I would like to reproduce here what Dharmendra expressed about this movie his home production, (as appearing on the blurb of the audio cassette);

It is not the first time in the history of Indian Cinema that a film has been inspired by India’s favorite revolutionary. And quite honestly, it might not even be the last. This Sikh youth of character so powerful and deep represents the meaning of true patriotism and fearlessness to one and all. It can be assured that every time a movie is made on Bhagat Singh, not one person leaves the cinema hall carrying the same heart with which he arrives. It is not just his sacrifice that moves you; his biggest revolutionary thought and his smallest patriotic action, stir your blood inside. Bhagat Singh cannot be imitated, no matter how impressed you might feel. And yet, the one reason he chose death over life was to create a thousand of his kind so that each one of them could bear the depth of the same patriotic fervor to serve their country.
– Dharmendra

I was staying at Bareilly when this movie was released in 2002 and I had watched both the movies simultaneously i.e. ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ and ‘23rd March 1931-Shaheed’. I remember both the movie were welcomed by huge crowds in their first week of release and thereafter ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ had a good run on the box office, better than the today’s movie.

‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ was directed by Guddu Dhanoa for ‘Sunny Super Sound Presentation’. It was produced by Dharmendra.

It had Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Amrita Singh, Rahul Dev, Akshay Anand, Vicky Ahuja, Divya Dutta, Raja Bundela, Suresh Oberoi, Shakti Kapoor, Vivek Shauq, Samaresh Rautrai, Indal Singh, Sanjay Tripathi, Tej Sapru, Rajesh Khera, Deepak Sharma, Suresh Chatwal, Sachin Khedekar, Manoj Tiwari, Rana Jung Bahadur, Ishrat Ali, Imran Khan, Master Atit, Master Honey and Aishwarya Rai (in friendly appearance).

Screenplay of this movie is written by Sutanu Gupta and Dialogues of this movie are written by Sanjay S. Masoom Editing of this movie is done by Keshav Naidu. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.05.2002.

This movie has seven songs, written by Dev Kohli. The song “Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna” by Ramprasad Bismil was included in the movie and with it the total number of songs makes it to eight. Songs in this film are sung by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Vinod Rathod, Hans Ran Hans (as per titles of the movie) and Bhupinder Singh, Mohd Salamat and Veer Rajendra (as mentioned in the blurb of the audio cassette of this movie and in addition to the names mentioned in the titles of the movie).

Today’s song is sung by Veer Rajinder and lyrics are by Dev Kohli. This song is in two parts (or may be three parts) in the movie as per video links available in the domain.

With the today’s song this movie ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ (2002) makes its debut on the blog.

Let us now listen to the today’s song. . .

Hullo Atuldom

We are on the last date of the first month of the 21st year of the 21st century.

January happens to be a cold month in the northern hemisphere of the earth. And India is in the middle of having winter which is characterized by fog, mist, cold winds etc depending on the Latitude that one resides on. When I used to be in Mumbai, the closest I came to experiencing ‘Sardi’, ‘Thandi’ etc was in the last week of December or first week of January. That too in the morning hours, till about 8 o’clock, then the thermometer would read round about 27 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day. I don’t remember seeing fog or mist there, but I had different climatic experiences once we shifted to Bangalore. I have seen all winter related features which last from November to January end with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees etc. Now in my current station, which is in the midst of lots of greenery and away from the hustle bustle of city-life, though the temperature did not touch 10 degrees on any day, we have been experiencing thick fog, cold winds, cold floors, etc.

All this talk of winter and cold climate, in addition to sharing pictures of fog with friends and family reminded me of a whole set of songs:- ‘jab chali thandi hawa’, ‘thandi hawaa yeh chaandni suhaani’, ‘thandi hawaa kaali ghaata aa hi gayi jhoom ke’, ‘thandi hawaayen lehraake aayen’, ‘thandi thandi hawaa mein dil lalchaaye’, ‘mujhko thand lag rahi hain’ etc etc.

The songs that I have mentioned are all popular numbers from their times. But the movies of the new century are no different. They also have songs where the different characters are reacting to cold climates with lots of guts- it takes a lot of guts to shoot these songs in cold climates, with snow etc for added effect and in costumes that are of the thinnest fabric possible like chiffon, lace etc. (Possibly the only climate appropriate dressing was Saira Banu in ‘Junglee’ and some other heroines of the ’60s and Hema Malini in a few movies of the ’70s, recently I re-saw “Dost”.) For further enhancement of the scene we may even see short dresses with long boots. My sympathies with all the female actors who have done those songs and scenes. And what do the male actors wear in such songs- long coats, mufflers, gloves etc.

In the build up to this post I recalled a 23 year old song. This song was shot in the cold climes of Australia. I had mentioned this movie to fellow-atulites, on our WhatsApp group last week, when the India- Australia cricket series was on. The uniqueness about this song is the heroine is dressed in climate appropriate clothes and we have the hero trying to be MANLY and showing of his biceps etc in half-jacket and jeans. I also read the heroine reminiscing about how the actor was shivering during the shoot.

I am talking of Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol. The movie was “Soldier” which was released in 1998. It was produced by Ramesh Taurani of Tips Records and directed by the director-duo: brothers Abbas-Mustan. It had Anu Malik as music director and Sameer was the lyricist. It was the third highest grossing album of 1998 behind “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Dil Se”.

This was Preity Zinta’s debut movie though she had signed “Kya Kehna” before this. “Dil Se” and “Soldier” have billed Preity Zinta as debutant; Preity had a supporting role in “Dil Se”. She was born in Shimla on 31st January. So today is her Birthday. Last I had written a post for her birthday was when she turned 40.

She has taken a sabbatical from acting a few times since 2009 for the sake of her IPL team. She has married her long-time American partner in 2016. In her career of almost 25 years, she has acted with all the top actors of the ’90s and later years. She has also acted in a movie with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor where her character was negative and Schizophrenic. She was praised for her portrayal of the character. She also appeared alongside The Big B in an English language film that was directed by Rituparno Ghosh “The Last Lear” in 2007, this was a film-inside-a-film drama. She has also played the traditional glamorous actress in movies. She has shared screen space with top actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee etc too.

Today’s song is to wish Bobby Deol too, even if belatedly for his birthday which was on 27th, he turned 52. Born as Vijay Singh Deol into the film industry as the youngest child of Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. He first faced the camera when he was 5 or 6 year old as the baby Dharam in “Dharam Veer” (1977). His first adult role was in “Barsaat” (1995) where another star-child Twinkle Khanna made her debut. He has one more “Barsaat” (2005) in the list of his films. He has appeared in a few mutli-starrers and also shared screen space with his father and brother in a few of their home productions. The “Yamla Pagla Deewana” series was good to see due to the Deols even if the story was lame, tame or weak. It is always entertaining to see the Deols.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

On this blog, Atul has a page for birthdays of various Hindi film artistes. He has meticulously kept track of these dates and makes it a point, as much as possible, to post a song honouring the artiste on the concerned date. That is like a doctor treating his patients.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 5
—————————————————–

The carrying capacity of this man is amazing. There is an aura about him that continues to draw the audiences. The measure of his success and popularity is pretty much sustained, as his fans continue to return to the cinema/video time after time after time. I believe that the secret behind this sustenance has been his capacity to re-invent himself, and his portrayals.

I must frankly admit that I have kept away from the mainstream cinema, mostly after the seventies faded away, and a new order both in terms of performers, as well as music, came on to the scene.  The time also coincided with the years amounting to almost two and a half decades that I was traveling, and away from India most of the time.  The viewing of current films was random and patchy at the best, and that I never went out of my way to acquire and watch a current film.  Unless it was recommended to me, and that too, by someone whose judgement I would trust.
