Hullo Atuldom

Today is the birth anniversary (100th) of the legendary filmmaker, actor, choreographer of the 1950s & early ’60s. I found this article in today’s Times Of India.

As I was writing my previous post on Guru Dutt I came across this article on the internet. It spoke of K. Asif’s magnum opus “Love And God” which initially had Guru Dutt playing Qais (Majnu). But the movie halted with the death of the actor in 1964.

After a while K Asif revived “Love and God”; this time with Sanjeev Kumar playing Majnu (Qais). Nimmi was still Laila. The film again came to a halt with the passing of K. Asif in 1971, the film was about 70% complete.

In the mid-1980s, Akhtar Asif (K Asif’s widow) tried to revive the film but this time Sanjeev Kumar died (in 1985).

I feel that somethings are uncanny and inexplicable. K. Asif was 48 (born in 1922); Guru Dutt was 39 (born in 1925) & Sanjeev Kumar was 47 (born in 1938) when they left this world.

K Asif spent the the better part of his career in bringing ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ to life; it finally released in 1960. It’s success inspired him to plan ‘Love and God’. That took approximately 20 or more to reach the Silver Screen.

The love story of Laila & Majnu is well known & we have had Rishi Kapoor & Ranjeeta play the star-crossed lovers in the 1976 “Laila Majnu”. There are 2 more films with this title listed on our blog with 1945 & 1953 as released years. There is a film with the title ‘Laila’ (only) with year of release as 1954.

Having spoken so much about this romantic I tried to find something more. Here is what I found:-

Layla and Majnun is an old story from Arabia about two lovers, Qays and Layla. Qays loved Layla very much, but her father didn’t want them to be close to each other. Qays loved Layla so much that he couldn’t stop thinking about her, and people started calling him “Majnun,” which means “crazy”. (“possessed by Jinn”).

9th July is the birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar too. He was born Harihar Jethalal Jariwala in Surat which was in Bombay Presidency at that time. He came to Bombay at a young age. That he started his acting career on the stage is well known. Even as a stage actor he had a penchant for playing older roles. His Hindi film debut came in 1960 with a small role in ‘Hum Hindustani’. His last released film was ‘Proffessor Ki Padosan’ in 1993 (8 years after his death in 1985.) An interesting trivia, which I never tire of, is that he played lover, father, father-in-law, and a friend-cum-guide to Jaya Bhadhuri. He has also played older brother, friend, father to Amitabh Bachchan.

There are many lively songs with foot-tapping music filmed on this actor, but since we are on “Laila Majnu” through “Love And God” here is a song with Mohd Rafi’s playback, Naushad’s music direction & Khumar Barabankvi’s lyrics.

Remembering this versatile, good looking, dimple- smiled actor who went away too soon.

Song-Ye naadaanon kee duniya hai (Love and God)(1986) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Khumar Barabankvi, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

ye naadaanon kee duniya hai
ye deewaanon kee mehfil hai
yahaan hansna bhi mushkil hai
yahaan rona bhee mushkil hai
ye naadaanon ki duniya hai
ye deewaanon kee mehfil hai

kayaamat ho gayee barbaad mere dil ke lagaane par
zamaana mujh pe hansta hai mai hansta hu zamaane par
yahaan jo pyaar karta hai
yahaan jo pyaar karta hai
wo deewaanon mein shaamil hai
yahaan hansna bhee mushkil hai
yahaan rona bhi mushkil hai
ye naadaanon kee duniya hai
ye deewaanon kee mehfil hai

mohabbat kee na ho jisne
mohabbat ko wo kya jaane
na ho dil jis ke seene mein
wo kaise gham ko pehchaane
dikhaaun kis ko zakhm e dil
dikhau kis ko zakhm e dil
yahaan jo hai wo kaatil hai
yahaan hansna bhee mushkil hai
yahaan rona bhee mushkil hai
ye nadaanon kee duniya hai
ye deewanon kee mehfil hai
