In this article I am taking up for discussion an obscure film, ‘Rukhsat’ (1988) which I watched online recently. The film was written and directed by Simi Grewal – the only film she directed so far. The cast included Mithun Chakraborty, Anuradha Patel, Marc Zuber, Amrish Puri, Simi Grewal, Pradeep Kumar, Rohini Hattangadi, Tom Alter, Baby Sona Sardesai etc with friendly appearance by Sujit Kumar. The film took about 6 years to complete and get released.
Although this film is like any other mainstream Hindi films, the story has been presented in a series of flashback scenes. A significant length of the film has been shot in the USA as some characters in the story of the film are US-based. Moreover, US-based Cinematographer and the fight composer were used for the scenes shot in the USA. It is stated elsewhere that the story of the film is inspired from Ken Follet novel ‘The Man from St. Petersburg (1982)’. I have read the review of this book and it appears to me that the main theme of the film, more or less, matches with that of the novel. Towards the end, Simi Grewal falls back on the style of typical Hindi films.
In the film, Mithun Chakraborty, a mechanic is in love with Anuradha Patel, daughter of a wealthy man, Pradeep Kumar. Both have decided to get married, However, Pradeep Kumar is opposed to the marriage and he sends Anuradha to US at her aunt’s place to avoid her marriage with Mithun. In the U.S., she is pressurised to get married to Mark Zuber. After 9 years, Mithun, who has now become a contract killer, visits US on an assignment to kill Mark Zuber without knowing that he is the husband of Anuradha and her 8-year-old daughter is their love child. Mithun is caught in a bind when he comes to know about these.
The film was a disaster at the box office front despite the box office attraction of Mithun Chakraborty. When the film was released in 1988, by then, Mithun Chakraborty had attained a status of a disco dancer and an action star. However, in this film, his role was more towards depicting him in an emotional character. However, the remake of this film, ‘Jeet’ (1996) was a box office hit with Sunny Deol, Karishma Kapoor and Salman Khan replicating the roles of Mithun Chakraborty, Anuradha Patel and Marc Zuber, respectively.
The Urdu word, ‘rukhsat’ is generally used as a part of etiquette to seek permission to leave or depart. It fits well in the context of the film’s story which is presented in a series of flashbacks. However, I present below the story of the film in a sequential order for an easy understanding:
Arjun Rai (Mithun Chakroborty) is alone in Mumbai and works as an auto mechanic for a living. He and wealthy Sapna (Anuradha Patel) are in love with each other, much to the chagrin of Sapna’s dad (Pradeep Kumar), who wants her to get married to someone wealthy. Arjun decides to make himself financially strong to marry Sapna. He buys a garage for which he borrows money from his client, Jagdish Chopra (Amrish Puri). He works hard and is able to save some money. When he goes to propose for Sapna’s hand, her dad asks his watchmen to throw him out. In this milieu, they find out that Arjun is armed with a knife. Sapna’s dad summons police and Arjun is arrested and imprisoned. When Jagdish Chopra comes to know about Arjun’s imprisonment, he visits the jail and assures him that when he gets released from the jail, he will get him some works as well as money. He also hands over a telegram which was lying in his house. The telegram is from Sapna who informs him that she is getting married and he should forget her. Arjun is shattered with this news.
Sapna is sent to the U.S. to stay with her aunt (Rohini Hattangadi) in New York. Gautam Saigal (Marc Zuber) is the family friend of her aunt who occasionally visits her. When Sapna reveals her aunt that she is pregnant with her pre-marital relationship with Arjun, her aunt convinces her to get married to Gautam Saigal. Sapna and Gautam get married and within a year, Sapna is blessed with a daughter. In India, Arjun is released from the jail with a changed attitude. He has anger in his mind against the society for which he can do anything. He meets Jagdish Chopra who becomes his contract killer. Eight years later, Arjun is given an assignment to kill Gautam Saigal, a nephew of Chopra on account of some property dispute.
Arjun goes to the U.S and stays in a homestay of Radha Talwar (Simi). After getting the whereabouts of Gautam and his routine, Arjun lays a trap when Gautam is travelling in a car with Sapna in the night. When the car has stopped for a moment, Arjun takes out his knife and tries to kill Gautam. However, the moment he sees Sapna by his side, he hesitates for a moment and runs away. Gautam reports the matter to the police and Captain Morrison (Tom Alter) is assigned to investigate the attempted murder of Gautam. On the basis of Gautam’s impression about the person who attempted to kill him, a sketch is prepared.
Arjun is in a quandary. He locates the address of Sapna and visits her villa when he sees her watering the flower plants. He meets her with surprises on both the faces. He comes to know the circumstances under which Sapna was pressurised to marry Gautam. After some time, her 8-year-old daughter, Komal (Sona Sardesai) joins them. Soon Komal becomes pally with Arjun. They regularly meet in the park and Arjun develops affinity towards Sapna’s family forgetting about his assignment to kill Gautam. Sapna does not know that Arjun has attempted to kill her husband.
In India, Jagdish Chopra becomes impatient as Arjun has not yet carried out his given assignment. Chopra questions his silence on the assignment for which he now tells him that he does not want to kill Gautam as he has his wife and a daughter. In fact, Arjun says that from now onwards, Gautam is under his protective shield and no one should try to kill him. Since Arjun knows too much of his activities, Chopra decides to eliminate him by assigning the work to one of his contract killers in the USA. But Arjun overcomes this attempt. So, Chopra himself comes to the U.S. to eliminate Arjun. He even makes a visit to the Gautam’s house for reconnaissance purposes in the guise of a courtesy visit.
Sapna is impatient with the progress of the case as she fears that there may be another attempt to kill Gautam. He assures her that the police has almost identified the person. He shows her the sketch of Arjun prepared by the police. Sapna is shocked as she assumes that Arjun has tried to kill Gautam to eliminate from her life so that he can have Sapna. In the meanwhile, the police has raided his homestay and found some photograph of Gautam’s daughter with Arjun which is shown to Gautam. A suspicion is created in Gautam’s mind as to how Komal has met Arjun. Sapna belches out the truth and Gautam is shocked that Komal is Arjun’s daughter.
One day, Sapna finds Arjun in their outhouse where he is hiding from the police after his homestay was raided. She meets him where he assures her that although he had come to the U.S. to kill Gautam on a contract assignment, seeing her, he changed his mind. He is now here because Gautam’s life is in danger. However, Sapna tells him to run out of the house as police has identified him. However, Arjun says that it does not matter now whether he is arrested or killed as his daughter needs Gautam more than him and he is here to protect Gautam. So, he stay put in the outhouse.
Chopra has planned to kill Gautam in the night by short-circuiting the power supply in his house so that there is darkness. However, Komal sees him which forces him to abandon the short-circuiting work half-way to keep Komal confined to a closed room. However, by that time, a series of sparks in electric wiring set the house on fire. Everyone including Sapna and Gautam vacate the house and search for Komal who is trapped in a close room. By this time, Arjun reaches the spot after hearing the commotion. After overcoming his hesitance, Gautam joins Arjun to forcefully open the door and rescue Komal. When Gautam and Komal are coming out of the room, Chopra stands with a rifle and fires at Gautam. However, before that Arjun jumps on Chopra to save Gautam but gets hit by the bullet fired for Gautam. An injured Arjun snatches the rifle from Chopra and kills him. Arjun succumbs to his injury with Komal by his side and telling Sapna and Gautam that he is taking ‘rukhsat’ from them.
The film had six songs written by Anjaan (5) and Farooq Qaiser (1) which were set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji. I present the first song, ‘teraa meraa pyaar amar’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Sadhana Sargam and Suresh Wadkar on the words of Anjaan. The song is picturised on Anuradha Patel and Mithun Chakraborty in Ooty and in a tea estate around in Coonoor.
The context of the song is that Mithun is repairing Pradeep Kumar’s car in the garage when his daughter Anuradha Patel comes and asks the key of the car as she wants to drive the car without the knowledge of her father. She asks Mithun to sit in the car as she is not well versed in driving. During the driving, Mithun saves the car from an accident. Over a period of time, they become close to each other. On the next occasion, he himself drives her in the car to visit a park where they sing the song expressing their love for each other.
