Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) -5 (1985)
——————————————————————

In today’s post we move on to Pancham’s music in 1985.

Pancham Da continued to give his best in this year too like the previous years. He composed music for eighteen movies in 1985, one more than the tally of seventeen in 1984.

His music of 1985 was a mix of some excellent, very good and good music. Songs of ‘Alag-Alag’, ‘Saagar’, ‘Arjun’, ‘Savere Waali Gaadi’, ‘Zabardast’, ‘Laava’, ‘Sitamgar’, ‘Raahi Badal Gaye’ (ik baat dil mein aayi hain) were quite popular and frequently heard.

The list of eighteen movies where Pancham composed music in 1985 is given below.

For today’s presentation we have a song from the movie ‘Aar Paar-1985’. This movie will make its debut on the blog today. This was one of the reasons to select a song from this movie. The other reason being that the song is sung by R.D. Burman himself. Another reason is that this song is a lesser-heard song as well. But if one listens to this song a few times it grows upon you. It is a very nice hummable philosophical song.

Today (4 january 2022) happens to be the twenty-eighth ‘Remembrance Day’ (27 June 1939 – 4 January 1994) of our beloved Pancham Da. It has been twenty-eight years since he left us forever. But the music that he created will remain with us forever as long as HFM is around.

This is the fifth song in this series. I had kept this song up my sleeve for this day after drafting it more than one month back.

The song being posted today is our tribute to ‘Pancham Da’ and his ‘music’ in HFM.

The song is from the movie ‘Aar-Paar’(1985). ‘Aar-Paar'(1985) was directed by Shakti Samanta for his home productions ‘Shakti Films, Bombay’. Shakti Samanta was also the producer of this movie. It was an Indo-Bangladesh Co-Production. And Syed Hasan Imam (of Chitrangan-Dhaka) was the Co-Producer of this movie from Bangladesh.

‘Aar-Paar'(1985) had Mithun Chakravarty, Rosina, Nutan, Asit Sen, Utpal Dutt, Manik Dutt, Tarun Ghose, Ghulam Mustafa, Hasan Imam, A.T.M. Shamsuz Zaman, Ahmed Sharif, Ghulam Rafique, Madhu, Shekhar, Amal Bose, Kali Pada Sen, Bullet, Qutub, Mohammad Ali, Chunnu, Minhaz, Barua, Nurul Islam, Sumita Devi, Shahre Banu, Maya Ghose, Reena, Papiya and others.

Story of this movie was written by Shakti Pada Rajguru. Screenplay of this movie was jointly written by Shakti Samanta and Shanu Bannerjee.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Pradeep Roy Chowdhury. Bijoy Chowdhury was the editor of this movie.

This movie had six songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Shailendra Singh, Sabeena, Yasmin and R.D. Burman had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.11.1985.

Let us now listen to today’s song which is played in the background while we can see some policemen taking Mithun Chakravarty with them while some villagers (including friends of Mithun Chakravarty in the movie) are seen watching them.

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by R.D. Burman. lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. Music is composed by R.D. Burman.

(This post also serves of bringing movies with same title on the blog. With this song Aar-Paar(1985) joins the well-known movie ‘Aar Paar-(1954) in the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

Time for a yearly roundup!!!! 2021 coming to a close. 2022 just a sunrise away. Hope we have different experiences in 2022, experiences that make us glad and bring a smile to our lips which stays the whole year.

I am sure Atulji or Sudhirji or one of the other blog-contributors, who have the patience to go through the statistics etc., will give us a table of how many new movies debuted on the blog in 2021, and other related info about which date saw how many posts etc. But the best that happened this year, IMO, is the series that Atulji undertook to enlist all the movies, music directors etc that Lata Mangeshkar was associated with in her looonnngg career.

On the way out of 2021 here is a song from the 1993 release “Shatranj”. A movie that I saw at the time of its release on cable TV, before the Satellite TV Tsunami hit us. It was produced by Arun S. Thakur, directed by Aziz Sejawal, had music by Anand Milind, and Sameer was the lyricist. S P Balasubramaniam, Abhijeet, Udit Narayan, Jolly Mukherjee, Kumar Sanu, Sudesh Bhonsle, Jayshree (popular as Bombay Jayshri in classical music circles), Poornima, Sadhana Sargam (i.e. all the good singers of the 90s) were used in the movie.

Kadar Khan was the dialogue writer of the movie which begins like “Chalti ka Naam Gaadi” (CKNG) which means we have three brothers -bachelors- who are reared by the eldest brother Dharamraj (Kadar Khan), the other two brothers being Dino and Dinky (Jackie and Mithun). The eldest brother has a problem with the female gender of the populace (like Ashok Kumar in CKNG), the other two don’t have any such issues and Renu & Radha (Divya Bharaati and Juhi Chawla) are their girl friends. Then there is a female called Rosie (Jamuna who appeared in a few films in the 80s and 90s, not much is known about her) who is shown to like the elder brother Dharamraj since childhood (Sarfaraz Khan, Kadar Khan’s own son played the younger Dharamraj). The reason for Dharamraj’s problem with females is shown as his step-mother who was nasty to him and his brothers as children.

The story has the necessary villain in the character of Prajapati (Kiran Kumar) the manager to the brothers’ father’s (Vikas Anand) business and also his killer. He is cheating the brothers’s step-mother and step-brother (Shakti Kapoor) and using their business as a front for his illegal activities (what else). The brothers have some misunderstandings with Dharamraj when Renu & Radha enter their lives, which get resolved; then the hard-feelings towards the step-family also is sorted out and the cause of all the problems in their lives (Prajapati) is brought to his logical end. And then “The End”.

Oh I forgot to mention a few more tributes that the movie paid to CKNG. CKNG had ‘Mohan Garage’ here the brothers have ‘Dharam Garage’. There was a ‘car’ in CKNG even this movie had a ‘car’ important to the story. CKNG begins with a song on the pet car, this one too begins with a song on the car. Additionally the brothers have a pet Monkey/ Chimpanzee. So let us have the movie debuting on the blog with the film-opening song that shows us the bonding between the brothers. This song is in the voices of SPB, Abhijeet and Udit Narayan.

There used to be a show called ‘Superhit Muqabla’ on Doordarshan Metro of those years (28 years back) which was on the lines of the legendary Binaca Geetmala. The show used to retire songs from the list of popular songs, which were complied based on vinyl records and cassette sales & and viewership of the show as such, after a 25 week run to make place for newer songs, very much like Binaca Geetmala. And songs of “Shatranj” (1993) were on this show for many weeks.

With this song we also say thank you to the entertainer Kadar Khan who left us today, in 2018, in Canada, where he was staying with his sons following his retirement from Bollywood. His last release was ‘Hogaya Dimaagh ka Dahi” in 2015 October (after a gap of seven years when ‘Mehbooba’ and ‘Deshdrohi’ released). He was a recipient of three Filmfare awards viz:

Best Dialogue for “Meri Awaz Suno” in 1982.

Best Comedian for “Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri” in 1991.

Best Dialogue (again) for “Angaar” in 1993.

He was conferred the Padma Shri, posthumously in 2019 by the Government of India.

He was 81 when he passed away.

Hullo Atuldom

Today’s post takes one more movie to YYIIPPEEEEHood.

“Khwaab” (1980) was a crime, court room drama genre movie with some romance and great songs thrown in for making it a complete entertainer. It had a cast of Ranjeeta, Yogita Bali, Mithun Chakraborty, Naseeruddin Shah, with Ashok Kumar, Madan Puri, Utpal Dutt leding the supporting cast which also had Chaman Puri, Birbal, Jagdish Raj, Sujit Kumar, Yunuz Parvez, Dinesh Thakur etc. It was directed by Shakti Samanta, had dialogues by Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza, songs were written and composed by Raindra Jain. Hemlata, Yesudas, Suresh Wadkar, Jaspal Singh and Mohd. Rafi were the playback singers.
The movie had four songs three of which are on the blog as follows:

Song Date of posting Remarks
Tu hi wo haseen hai 31 july 2015
Ek aas luye vishwaas liye 20 July 2020
Ham khwaab ko badal denge haqeeqat mein 22 September 2020 a very good post by Nahmji where she spoke about the usage of the English alphabet ‘K’ in Indian languages

Today’s song is an ‘outdoors song’ possibly inspired by the “jootaa hai japani” song from “Shri 420” (1955). We see Mithun walking, singing and dancing his way to Bombay (as it used to be called back then) and Raj Kapoor’s potli on a stick is replaced by a suitcase. On the way he sees Ranjeeta zipping past in an open Red car complete with sunglasses and Red Hat etc. These aspects -the open car had to be Red and two seater; the driver dressed smartly and slightly haughty- were mandatory to establish character-traits. And by the time the song comes to a close Mithun sees that Ranjeeta’s car has stalled- another mandatory. 🙂 The singer is K J Yesudas.

We are having this song to Wish Mithunda a very Happy birthday- may the song and dance and entertainment continue forever.

#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————–——
We have discussed ‘rail’ songs in our blog from time to time. Train and/or railways have always been my favorite subject and I always love to travel in trains whenever possible. I have many fond memories associated with my various journeys in narrow gauge, meter gauge and broad-gauge trains.

Other members of this blog also like to write about rail/train. Railways, there improvement, and possibility of high -speed trains to cover two long distance points in minimum time possible, is the favorite topic of many ‘Atulites’ and specially of Raja Saab.

And our leader Atul ji has also time to time discussed rail songs in his posts. It was couple of years back (or precisely in the month of May’2018) that there was some discussion about ‘railways and high-speed trains’ in the ‘Atulites WhatsApp’ group.

It started with Raja Saab expressing his wish for an overnight journey train between SBC-CSTM. He also mentioned that maybe he is a bit spoilt 😊 by high speed travels (by train) in Europe.

Well the discussion was a long one and I am not going to reproduced it all here. (Rather I will keep some points from it for another write-up in the future).

During the discussion Atul ji said that ‘as an insider (in railways)’ he can bring the various suggestions to the attention of the higher authorities or even through his posts on the blog he can throw light on many issues and can even take a series of articles connecting ‘rail/train’ issues if we can suggest him some good songs from Hindi movies.

As usually I am, being an over-enthusiastic person 😊, I search and send many songs to our editors. Atul ji had also wrote some good posts and presented some good songs. However, no song from the lot I sent was selected for a post (till now 😊).

Today I am presenting one of the songs from this lot.

So far, on the blog we have ninety-eight songs under ‘Rail songs’ and many of them are timeless classics like ‘zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam’ composed by R.D. Burman, ‘Gaadi bulaa rahi hai’ by Laxmikant-Pyarelal etc etc.

I think R.D. Burman composed many songs in this ‘genre’ and it would be interesting to know how many other lyricists and composers are involved in creating rail songs and who are the toppers.

But then, it again is the subject matter of another post (may be the next post in this ‘genre’ could be presented with these statistics with a rail song).

One of the other Pancham composed rail song that immediately comes to mind is ‘ham dono do premi duniya chhod chale’ from ‘Ajnabi-1974’ which was picturized with Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman on a ‘freight train’ jumping on ‘haystacks’. (Atul ji’s terminology) and I am specially mentioning this song now because
if we watch today’s song it immediately reminds us of the above song.

However, today’s song is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

And today 27th November 2020 is his sixty-eighth birth anniversary.

On this occasion wishing Bappi Lahiri a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful life ahead let us enjoy the today’s song picturized on Mithun Chakravarty and Ranjeeta, also seen is Shakti Kapoor in the picturization of this song.
(This song is also picturized on a ‘freight-train’ 😊)

‘Tarkeeb-1982’ was directed by Ravikant Nagaich for ‘Venus Combines, Madras’. Ravikant Nagaich also did the photography of this movie. It was produced by S. Krishnamurthy.

Story of this movie was written by Taarakaraamaa and dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant.
Editing of this movie was done by N.M. Shankar. It had Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakravarty, Shakti Kapoor, Rakesh Pande, Sharat Saxena, Paintal, Mukri, Beena, Parveen Pal, Naaz, Dinesh Hingoo, Leena Das, Dinesh Sharma, Kalpana Ayyer, Prem Bedi, Guddi, Madan Puri and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 25.11.1982.

This movie had six songs written by Anjaan and its music was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, S. Janaki, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, S.P. Balasubramaniam and Bappi Lahiri have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie ‘Tarkeeb-1982’ makes its debut on the blog and so does Bappi Da makes a debut in the category of ‘rail songs’ (if I am not wrong 😊) on the blog.

Let us now enjoy today’s song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Their voices are lip synced by Mithun Chakraborty and Ranjeeta respectively.

Paagal ye pyaasi pyaasi Raat
Ye mausam mehka mehka
Ye saanse dehki dehki
Honthon pe bahki bahki baa aat

Na aag hain naa dhuaan aa

Bhai jhuk jhuk gaadi
Jab jab boley
Dhak dhak doley
Dil mera aa

Kal tak to thhi deewaani
Karti thi main manmaani
Tujhse hi maani maine haa aar

Kismat mein thi tu meri
Kismat mein tha main teri
Hona thha tera mera pyaar
Jis din se teri baahon mein aayi
Bhooli main donon jahaan

Ye chalti gaadi ee
Gaadi mein ham tum
Donon akele yahaan
Arey jhuk jhuk gaadi
Jab jab boley
Hey dhak dhak doley
Dil mera aa

Hey Arey jhuk jhuk gaadi
Jab jab boley
Hey dhak dhak doley
Dil mera aa

Naa dar hai naa badnaami
Dil ne bhi bhar di haami
Phir kyun rahen door door
Kuchh boley ye tanhaayi
Dil thham thham le angdaayi
Donon nashe mein hain choor

Barson ke pyaase mil jaayen aise
Jaise zameen aasmaan
Haan
Ye chalti gaadi ee
Gaadi mein ham tum
Dono akele yahaan aa
Arey chhuk chhuk gaadi
Jab jab boley
dhak dhak doley
Dil mera aa

64th Birthday of Ranjeeta Kaur – 22.09.2020
———————————————————
I wish life could be just a song for the road just like this song on a motorcycle. A song heard in childhood, mainly on radio. In 1980 we had a T.V. at home, but that was only aired in the evening. The radio could be heard during the day also, but they were on air for specific hours only, be it “vividh bharati” or “All india Radio”, of which urdu service was the one for film songs. All these years the lyrics of the song complete with the first stanza have stayed in the memory. After the advent of youtube, I may have looked up this song too alongwith many other old songs.

I have seen quite a few films of Ranjeeta while she was active in the 80’s, as I and my mother used to like her innocent, homely looks. Many of these films were B grade low-budget films like ‘Qismat”, “Tarana” and ‘Khwaab” to name a few. She was paired with Mithun Chakrovorty in these films. I was under the impression that “Ankhiyon ke jharoke se”(1978) was a debut film for her, whereas she had appeared in the hit film “Laila Majnu” in 1976, opposite Rishi Kapoor. Both these are notable films of her career. But there after she appeared in few A grade films in bit roles like ‘‘Rajput”, “Satte Pe Satta” and “Krodhi”. Films like “Ham se Badhkar kaun”, “Aap to aise na the”, “Ustadi Ustad se” and “Tarana” are all seen and forgotten films.

As Ranjeeta Kaur turns 64 today, I am presenting this happy romantic song where she is singing this duet on motorcycle and the beach. The name of the film is “Khwaab”(1980) and singers are Hemlata and Yasudas. The lyricist and music director is Ravindra Jain.

Two songs from the film are posted.
Tu hi wo haseen hai
Ek aas liye vishwaas liye

“Khwaab” is one of its kind title as I could find no other film with the title as ‘Khwab” or ‘Khwaab”. The word means dream, and this year 2020 is turning out like a bad dream. I am sure all of us have had this feeling that we are asleep and embroiled in a bad dream, and hope fervently that we will wake up soon and this whole tragic crisis will disappear. Hope that it will dissolve like a bad dream, is soon forgotten.

Let us go to the song, which I would have categorized as a “in the family way songs” seeing the words of first stanza, but this one is not such a song. I have a few songs for this category in mind. Let us see when I get around to those songs. They are mostly 80’s/90’s songs, so this can be a precursor to that series.

This song starts with the urdu alphabet ‘khai’ making it one of rare songs for ‘antakshari” 🙂 . Only other song I can remember is “khwaab ho tum ya koyi haqeeqat kaun ho tum batlaao……..”. Not that most people bother with the fine distinction between the ‘kh’ of “khilauna” and ‘kh’ of ‘Khwaab’. I can wish all I want for a way of distinguishing it in the English script, with a dot or some such thing. Rekhta.com has adopted an entirely different way of spelling the urdu /hindi words in English script, which is rather complicated even for someone like me. Urdu is a language with fewest dictionary words. Sometimes the same word is used for different meanings in different situation. One example is the word “taarikh” which means “date” and history, but not inclusive. Then there is the confusion with ‘q’ and ‘k’.

Common words where K is correct are :
Mushkil – difficulty
Ashk – tear (aansoo)
Rashk – envy
Shak – doubt
Kalaam – spoken word or talk
Shikwa – grievance
Shikayat – complaint
Shaukat – power or dignity

Q is appropriate here :
Qalam – pen
Ishq – love
Raqs – dance
Qalb – heart
Sadaqah – charity (sort of)
Beqaraar – restless, disturbed
Shauq – deep interest, zeal
Qataar – line, queue or array
Iqraar – acceptance or agree, promise

And there is added complication of words where ‘Q’ is compulsorily written as ‘que’ as it is done in ‘Ishque’ or ‘aashiqui’ or some names such as siddique and taarique. I have not gotten to two different alphabet with different sounds for whom the alphabet ‘t’ is used. The ‘t’ of ‘taara’ is different from the ‘t’ of ‘totaa’. There is confusion galore for the untutored. So we let it be, the ‘no pain no gain’ school of thought be brushed under the carpet 🙂 .

Now that I have heard the song two three times, I have realized that it remained in the memory because of its very sweet and melodious sound. It is memorable for the lyrics as well as tune and the singing of both Hemlata and Yasudas.

Hullo Atuldom

Today 16th June is the 68th birthday of Gourang Chakraborty. He was born as the eldest son to Basantakumar Chakraborty and Santimoyee Chakraborty in East Bengal (modern day Bangladesh). He is an entrepreneur, social worker, television presenter, actor, producer, former Rajya Sabha member who has sung one song in his career that began in 1976 with the art film which was directed by Mrinal Sen’s National Award winning “Mrigayaa”.

Post “Mrigayaa” he was seen in a guest appearance in Raj Tilak directed Sanjeev Kumar -Shashi Kapoor- Vidya Sinha- Bindiya Goswami starrer “Mukti” (I saw it in his filmography, have seen the movie a few times but don’t remember seeing him there, I must have blinked at that instant).

1978 saw him in 2 Bengali and 3 Hindi films one of which was a small blink and miss role “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan”. Of the three Hindi movies “Hamara Sansaar” and “Mera Rakshak” were remakes of South Indian movies.

1979 had him as Gunmaster G9 in Ravikant Nagaich directed “Surakshaa”; a special appearance in “Tere Pyar Mein”; a guest appearance in Rajesh Khanna starrer “Amardeep” as Rajesh Khanna’s sister’s boyfriend; a regular Basu Chatterjee hero in “Prem Vivah” alongside Utpal Dutt, Asha Parekh and Bindiya Goswami. Plus there was “Bhayanak” and Rajshri productions “Tarana”.

“Surakshaa” and “Tarana” gave him some good songs to dance to, and also these two movies are still remembered for their songs.
These days we see him on TV in the role of maha-judge on dance reality shows. And also he plays roles suited to his age in most movies like Mani Ratnam’s “Guru”; Rohit Shetty’s “Golmaal 3”; Anil Sharma’s “Veer”; Vinay Sapru- Radhika Rao directed “Lucky: No time for love” etc. The roles he has been getting are varied where he is able show off his comic side and still dance and do fisticuffs.

For today’s occasion I have a whole list of songs to choose from. Songs from movies that I have seen and loved. I have settled for a song that I heard for the first time in 1987. I even had the cassette of this movie in my collection and seen the movie at the time of its release.

This song has been on my personal waiting list for a few years now. It is from the 1987 B. Subhash produced and directed “Dance Dance”. Smita Patil, Mithun (Gourang) Chakraborty, Mandakini, Shakti Kapoor formed the primary cast with Amrish Puri and Om Shivpuri playing supporting cast. It was the story of the brother sister team of Smita and Mithun who are separated from their parents as children, grow up to be singers who are part of a troupe which performs at events and restaurants. There is the usual twist of the sister falling in love and marrying a guy who later turns bad, ditches her and also is the cause of her death. The movie comes to a close with the brother avenging his parents as well as the sister’s death.

Bappi Lahiri was the music director for this movie which was part of a series of dance based films that B Subhash made post the successful “Disco Dancer”. Anjaan was the lyrics in-charge for all these movies. Today for this birthday song we shall have a party where Shakti Kapoor and Mithun sing to an audience of oldies. It is rather sweet to see the spirit of the folks in the audience when they take to the floor with Mithun and Shakti. And we have Smita Patil among the audience egging everybody to enjoy themselves. Let us also enjoy ourselves wishing this disco dancer- break dancer – Mithunda a very Happy Birthday.

“Waardaat”(1981) was produced and directed by Ravikant Nagaich for Gopi Enterprises, Bombay. This movie had Mithun Chakraborty, Kajal Kiran, Shakti Kapoor, Kalpana Iyer, Iftekhar,Birbal, Kesto Mukherjee, Jagdeep, Prem Bedi, Manorama, Praveen Paul, Thyagraj, Randhir, Dinesh Hingoo, Prem Kumar, Sharat etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. They were sung by five singers.

Today (7 november 2019) is the 71st birthday of Usha Uthup. On this occasion, here is a song from “Waardaat”(1981). This song is sung by Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri. Ramesh Pant is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

The song is picturised on Kalypana Iyer and Mithun Chakraborty.

Mithun Chakrborty enjoyed vast popularity among the chawanni chhaap movie goers of those days :). Such audiences were to be found all over India, and more so in eastern part of the country. Front stall movieoers of Bihar (including present day Jharkhand) “ditched” their own Shatrughan Sinha and became fans of Mithun Chakraborty. 🙂

I was among the small minority who did not like Mithun Chakraborty movies. 🙂

If teenagers of Maharashtra celebrated Ganpati festival, then teenagers in Eastern parts celebrated Saraswati Puja in a similarly grand way. Playing hindi movie music in these Saraswati Puja pandals used to be a major activity of these saraswati Puja festivities. Operating the record player and thus deciding which songs to play used to be a much sought after task. I had the proud privilege of being the record player operator in early 1980s at Ranchi. 🙂 I recall playing “disco” songs of those days, including the song under discussion. 🙂

Most Saraswati Puja organisers used to be academically challenged. They would bring their (largely untouched) textbooks in the pandal to be kept at the feet of goddess Saraswati, hoping that pooja thus performed would magically transfer the contents of those text books into their brains. 🙂

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

With this song, “Waardaat”(1981) makes its debut in the blog.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 71 #Remembering Kishore Kumar on his birth anniversary#
——————————————

Today 4th August (2018) (4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987) is the 89th birth anniversary of the ‘Versatile Genius’ Kishore Kumar or Abhas Kumar Ganguly or as he always liked to introduce himself as – Kishore Kumar Khandwewaala. ( 🙂 I cannot forget Khandwa when I am writing about Kishore Kumar.)

I had already marked a song earlier to present on this occasion but could not finish the write-up as during past many days I had been facing a very hectic schedule on work front and also getting very less time in the evening even to browse the blog which otherwise is my daily routine activity in evening every day.

However, a little relaxation at work today gives me this opportunity to write this post. And I am writing it just eight hours before it will be 4th August there in India. And I sincerely hope that our ‘Editors’ get enough time to review it.

There were two posts on the blog recently reminding me of the song which I am going to present here today.

One was when Atul ji posted a ‘disco based song’ from the movie ‘Dil-E-Naadaan’ sung by Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna, and another one was Peevesie’s Mom sharing a song from ‘Suraag-1980’, my memories of listening to today’s song got refreshed.

So, when I was finding myself unable to present a writeup on this occasion, this song comes to my rescue and here I am, presenting this song with a brief write up.

As some of our regulars may be remembering and I also have mentioned this in my earlier write-ups, I was totally taken up by Rajesh Khanna and his movies starting in early eighties and I was trying to look for his other earlier movies and songs more and more. And whenever I came across a Kishore Kumar song I was trying to find out if it was from a Kaka movie and for Kaka.

My Uncles and other relatives would often teasing me on Rajesh Khanna subject and that is why when I wanted to know about this today’s song they told me that it was from the movie Suraag. And since Kaka had a guest appearance in this movie I thought it was possible that this song was picturised on him.

However, it was not a Kaka Song but a nice hummable Kishore Kumar song which was then available in Disco Songs Compilation on cassettes. And it was not from the movie ‘Suraag’ too.

It took me a few years to find out that this song was from the movie ‘Patita-1980’. Finally, when we arrived in the ‘digital age’ of internet and YTthen I came to know that this song was lip synced and performed by Mithun Chakravarty on screen.

So today, on the birth anniversary of Kishore Kumar let us enjoy this song …

The movie ‘Patitaa-1980’ was passed by Censor Board on 11.11.1980. It was directed by I.V. Shashi for ‘Tristar Movies, Bombay’. It had Shoma Anand, Vikram, Raj Kiran, Mithun Chakravarty, Shammi, Ram Sethi, Raj Mehra, Mac Mohan, C.S. Dubey, Birbal, Baby Shalu, Master Rajesh, Viju Khote, Madhup Sharma, Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo, Bramha Bharadwaj, Jagdish Raj.

Sujit Kumar, Sulochana, Madan Puri, Padma Khanna, and Bhawana Bhatt make guest appearance in this movie.

‘Patitaa-1980’ had five songs written by Anand Bakshi and music composed by Bappi Lahiri. Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

As mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) the records of this movies included the ‘Instrumental Disco Music’ based on the tune of the today’s song – ‘dil dhak dhak karne lagaa’ thus making the total number of songs of this movie to Six.

I have not watched this movie and would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

The movie makes a debut on the blog with the today’s song and this also serves the one of my purpose of introducing movies having the same title. We on our blog have the famous oldie ‘Patita-1953’ already ‘Yippeeeed’. The second ‘Patitaa-1980’ makes a debut today. 🙂

Let us now enjoy this foot tapping song and remember our beloved Kishore Da today …
And just listen the freshness in his voice and how he sings this one for Mithun Chakravarty in a ‘mellowed’ tone but in a ‘disco mood’ …

Song-Dil dhhak dhhak karne laga (Patita)(1980) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Bappi Lahiri

Lyrics

Dhak dhak dhak dhak
Dhak dhak dhak dhak
Dhak dhak dhak dhak
Dhak dhak dhak dhak

Dil dhak dhak karne lagaa aa
Main dil se darne lagaa aa
Dil dhak dhak karne lagaa
Main dil se darne lagaa
Aisaa aa lagtaa hai
Main kisi pe marne lagaa aa
Haaye
Dil dhak dhak karne lagaa
Main dil se darne lagaa

Main poochha karta hoon
Is dil deewaane se
Wo khud aaye to kya ho
Jiski yaad aane se
Aayi ee koi khushboo oo
Koi jaadoo oo
chalne lagaa aa
Ho o o o o
Aisaa aa lagtaa hai
Main kisi pe marne lagaa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Dil dhak dhak karne lagaa aa
Main dil se darne lagaa aa

Tasveerein dekhin hain
Kitni baazaaron mein
Hey ae
Tasveerein dekhin hain
Kitni baazaaron mein
Tum jaise hain hazaaron
Wo hai ek hazaaron mein
Dekhi
do nigaahen
Main aahen bharne lagaa
Ho o o o
Aisaa lagtaa hai
Main kisi pe marne lagaa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Dil dhak dhak karne lagaa
Main dil se darne lagaa aa

Sochaa thha kheloonga
Main ek khilaune se ae
Ab kaise rokoon dil ko
uspe aashiq hone se
Main to
dillagi mein ae
Dil ka saudaa
karne lagaa aa
Ho o o o
Aisaa lagtaa hai
main kisi pe marne lagaa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Dil dhak dhak karne lagaa
Main dil se darne lagaa
Aisaa lagtaa hai
main kisipe marne lagaa
Haa

“Prem Pratigya”(1989) was produced by B Lognathan and directed by Bapu. This movie had Mithun Chakraborty, Madhuri Dixit, Vinod Mehra, Deven Verma, Satish Kaushik, Aruna Irani, Ranjeet, Neelu Phule, Kamal Deep, Jamuna, Farida Dadi, Darshan, Manmouji, Subhash, Sayeeda Khan, Jahangir, Renu Joshi etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog.

The song is a party song where the hero is suipposed to steal the show. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

The lyrics are nice and the music is wonderful. This song had the potential to be as memorable as the Kishore Kumar songs of “Namak Halaal” and “Sharaabi” songs of same genre. But then those songs were picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and this song under discussion is lip synced by Mithun Chakraborty. Chalk and cheese ! People less discerning than me in such matters may disagree. Nevertheless, it is my opinion that the great singing by Kishore Kumar, assisted by great lyrics and music, got wasted in this case.

I am unable to identify the female dancer seen in the picturisation. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

With this song, “Prem Pratigya”(1989) makes its debut in the blog.
