#The Decade of Nineties – 1991 – 2000 #
———————————————————————
In my previous post earler today I discussed the ongoing monsoon season in our country. Monsoon has arrived more than a month back and most parts of the country has received good rains. That got me interested to present a rain song here today.
Lots of rain songs are yet to be covered on the blog. When I checked the category of rain songs I noted that the last rain song on the blog was posted on 26th August 2023. It is surprising that no rain song was posted after August 2023 unless some such songs were posted but they failed to get tagged under rain songs.
The rain song under discussion is from the 1993 movie ‘Gardish’. It was produced by R. Mohan for Good Knight Films and was directed by Priyadarshan. It had Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Shammi Kapoor, Kunika, Asrani, Dimple Kapadia, Raj Babbar, Rakesh Bedi, Tej Sapru, Anand Mahadevan, Suresh Oberoi, Annu Kapoor and Shagufta Ali. This movie introduced Aiswarya (from South) and Mukesh Rishi. The story of this movie was written by A.K. Lohitadas. Its dialogues were written by Suraj Sanim. Priyadarshan who directed this movie also wrote the ‘screen play’ for it. The editing of this movie was done by N. Goplakrishnan. Santosh Sivan was the Director of Cinematography of this movie and Choreography was done by Sundaram, Prabu Deva and Suchitra. This movie has six songs penned by Javed Akhtar. The music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. The singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, M.G. Sreekumar and S.P. Balasubramaniam.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19th August 1993, and it was a remake of Malayalam movie ‘Kireedam’. Its remake was also made in Telugu, Kannada before the Hindi version and later in Bengali and Tamil. For those who have not watched this movie I would sum up the storyline in very short as given below. As mentioned in my earlier post with the songs of this movie I wish that those who have not watched this movie should watch it for the powerful performances especially by Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Dimple Kapadia and Mukesh Rishi and others.
I would also like to mention the role played by Annu Kapoor wherein he is playing an educated unemployed who accidentally become a ‘beggar’ for survival, but capitalizing on it he went on to employ many educated unemployed into his ‘business’ (empire of ‘bhikharees’😊, and he also ‘innovatively’ deputes each of them according to their ‘relevant qualification’ for placement of ‘begging’ at a particular ‘location/field’. It’s a ‘cynical comedy’ type role and Annu Kapoor has given his very best in this role. The tagline on the posters of the movie – ‘Wanted to be a man of law, now wanted by the law’ i.e. the protagonist in the movie – the hero- Jackie Shroff. Amrish Puri, who plays the father to Jackie Shroff in this movie, is a Havaldar in Police and he is always dreaming of his song becoming a Police Inspector. However, life takes a turn for the hero who was an aspiring Police Officer who took on ‘criminals’ to save his father first, then his Sister and finally ending up killing the goon Billa Jilani (played by Mukesh Rishi). The protagonist Shiva (Jackie Shroff) is arrested by Police and due to criminal cases against him now he will never become a ‘Police Officer’. The movie ends with Amrish Puri submitting a police verification report for his son’s Police Job to his senior Suresh Oberoi mentioning that as per the police verification report Shiva (Jackie Shroff) cannot become a police officer since he is a ‘criminal’.
Today’s song happens when Shiva (Jackie Shroff) leaves his father’s house due to differences between them and he takes shelter in front of a hutment type house in the ‘bastee’. It starts raining and the owner of the house Shanti (Dimple Kapadia) noticing somebody outside and offers shelter to Shiva in her house. Shanti is a prostitute now as her husband Pratap (Raj Babbar) and son were burnt alive by Billa Jilani, when her husband didn’t follw Billa’s orders to end strike at the textile-mill where he was working. Shanti comes to know about Shiva’s fight with Billa Jilani and how he saved his father and later many others in the bastee from the goons of Billa Jilani, who was otherwise extorting ‘haftaa’ from the people in the bastee.
Shanti develops a soft corner and love for Shiva. When she offers shelter to Shiva and he lies down to take rest Shanti tries to save him from the rain drops falling from the rooftop of her ‘kachchaa makaan’. Here she is dreaming about singing and dancing for Shiva. The picturisation of this song is very nice and the composition by Pancham is wonderful. Asha Bhonsle is the singer and lyrics are by Javed Akhtar.
Let us now enjoy this ‘rain song’ for today…lyrics noted are as per the audio version which is a longer one and having good quality sound.
