Today 4th August 2025 is the ninety-sixth birth anniversary of versatile genius Kishore Kumar Ganguly ‘Khandwewala’ (as he would have liked him called to be). He was born on 4th August 1929 at Khandwa (now in Madhya Pradesh). Kishore Kumar left this world at the age of fifty-eight only on 13th October 1987.
Much has already been written about Kishore Kumar on this blog. Kishore Kumar’s film journey, his personal life, his songs, all that have been discussed in the blog by our senior contributors and team members from time to time.
Kishore Kumar was also known for his eccentric behavior and Kishore Kumar’s take on this matter was ‘duniyaa kahtee hai mujhko paagal aur main kahtaa hoon duniyaa paagal‘ :). He was also known for being very particular about receiving his payments.
But here we are mainly interested in the songs that he has left behind for us to savour.
Nowadays, I have been presenting those saawan songs that were not yet represented on the blog.
So, here is a saawan song sung by Kishore Kumar from the 1978 movie ‘Saawan Ke Geet’. I was surprised to note that this movie was yet to be represented on the blog.
“Saawan Ke Geet-1978” was directed by R. Bhattacharya for A.J. Pictures, Bombay. It had Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Aruna Irani, Joginder, Bipin Gupta, Meena Rai, Dhoomal, Shaikh, Bhagwan, Mirza Musharraf, Mehmood and others. This move was passed by Censor Board on 16.02.1978 with ‘restricted viewing certificate’. That means it was out of reach for children like me who were growing then and those who were not even in their teens.. I would have celebrated my eleventh birthday just five days before the passing of this movie by Censor Board. This was a “social” movie and sources mention that it was in the making since the year 1971. (Geet Kosh mentions the director as K. Bhattacharya which is a typo, I guess, as other sources mention the director as R. Bhattacharya which is correct).
“Saawan Ke Geet-1978” has four songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. All the songs for this movie were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The singer for this movie includes Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey.
Sanjeev Kumar lip syncs the song. Rekha is aldo present with him. As the song ends Kishan (Sanjeev Kumar) sees a mother feeding her child and that reminds him of his mother and childhood. From his expressions it seems that Kishan had a troubled child hood and he may have been separated from his mother.
Let us now enjoy this rollicking saawan song that Kishore Kumar has sung with gusto.
PS : After finishing this write-up when I searched for the availability of this movie I found a version of this movie which is a ‘revised version’ passed by the censor board in the year ‘1982’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

this film was in the making since 1971 or so. It took a long time to make and pushed the producer/director R. Bhattacharya to the brink of bankruptcy. The family didn’t have good memories about this film. I am sure it was censored & released only in 1982
