#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
(Gulzar Saab’s 92nd Birthday 18th August 2025)
In this post I am presenting a song from a movie released in the year 1975. All songs of this movie have already been covered in the blog, which means the today’s song is an additional song which was not available at that time. This song was recorded, but it was not released on the records of this movie. This song was not picturised in the movie. Thanks to the fans of Pancham Da (and thanks a lot to Mili Bhattacharya jee, who had the recording (spool) of this song) and ‘Pancham Magic –Pune’ that this song is now available on internet for our listening pleasure. This song was released on internet on 27th June 2022.
This song was recorded for the movie ‘Khushboo-1975’. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 08.05.1975. Which means this movie has already completed fifty years of its existence. This movie was directed by Gulzar Saab. He also wrote the dialogues, lyrics, and screenplay (shared with D.N. Mukherjee and Bhooshan Banmali).
Nowadays we are celebrating ‘fifty years of the movie ‘Sholay’ and lot of discussions are also going around in all types of media about ‘Sholay’. But other than ‘Sholay’ we also remember this year for movie like ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’, ‘Pratigyaa’, ‘Deewaar’, ‘Sanyaasi’, ‘Prem Kahaani’, ‘Chupke-Chupke’, and ‘Aandhi’, etc.
However, one should also note that this was a very successful year for Gulzar Saab as well. In 1975 he directed three movies i.e. ‘Aandhi’, ‘Khushboo’ and ‘Mausam’. Gulzar Saab was the lyrics writer for all these movies and he was also part of Screenplay, Dialogues and writing of the movies.
If one goes through the list of Hindi movies that are directed by Gulzar Saab one gets the list as follows;
| Movie Title | Year | Passed by Censor Board on |
|---|---|---|
| Mere Apne | 1971 | 09.11.1971 |
| Parichay | 1972 | 18.10.1972 |
| Koshish | 1972 | 27.11.1972 |
| Achaanak | 1973 | 25.09.1973 |
| Aandhi | 1975 | 04.01.1975 |
| Khushboo | 1975 | 08.05.1975 |
| Mausam | 1975 | 29.12.1975 |
| Kinaaraa | 1977 | 21.03.1977 |
| Kitaab | 1977 | 31.12.1977 |
| Meera | 1979 | 18.05.1979 |
| Angoor | 1981 | 31.12.1981 |
| Namkeen | 1982 | 30.01.1982 |
| Ijaazat | 1987 | 31.08.1987 |
| Lekin | 1990 | 29.08.1990 |
| Libaas | 1991 | 30.08.1991 |
| Maachis | 1996 | 30.08.1996 |
| Hu Tu Tu | 1998 | 31.12.1998 |
“Khushboo-1975” was written & directed by Gulzar for Tirupati Pictures Combine. It was produced by Prasan Kapoor (Jeetendra’s brother). It had Jeetendra, Hema Malini, Durga Khote, Farida Jalal, Chandrima Bhaduri, Sarika, Dev Kishan, Sudhir Thakkar, Master Raju, Leela Mishra, Harish, Pratima Devi, Nasir, Bhola, Asrani and others. Om Shivpuri had a special appearance in this movie. Actress Sharmila Tagore also had a special appearance in this movie. It was based on the story by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. Screenplay for this movie was written by Gulzar, D.N. Mukherjee, and Bhooshan Banmali. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Bhonsle and Guru Dutt. Lyrics and dialogues of this movie were written by Gulzar. Music was composed by R.D. Burman.
I had not watched this movie earlier.I watched it for the first time yesterday and I liked it very much. The movie has good performances by all and the story on screen bring us the nuances of emotions of rural life of Bengal, human relationships and in the background of the endemic ‘plague’.
Four songs from this movie have already been covered on the blog earlier. And the comments on these posts have some discussions about its storyline too. But that is in parts. (I propose to add the detail storyline of this movie later in the future here).
Coming to the song under discussion, this song was not included in the movie as mentioned above. But this song is a nice composition. Amit Kumar, son of Kishore Kumar has discussed in details about this composition. Somehow this composition was later used by Pancham Da for ‘Poojo songs’ (Harano Dingulo-Amit Kumar- Bengali Modern Songs) released in 1978 where Amit Kumar, who liked this composition very much, sung it in Bangla.
This is such a wonderful and sensitive composition in terms of verses, singing, and music that it grows upon the listeners. It is unfortunate that it remained unheard for so long. I have listened to both the Hindi and Bengali versions many times over these three years after I became aware about it. This song, obviously, didn’t find any mention in Geet Kosh (1971-1975), and also didn’t feature in any books on Pancham except that it finds mention in the album ‘Qatrah-Qatrah-2008’ –Collection of Gulzar Pancham songs written by Vishwas Nerurkar and Bishwanath Chatterjee. In this book only the first two lines of this song are mentioned with a note that ‘according to Gulzar Saab, due to some changes in the story of the movie this song was not included in the movie’.
Let us now listen to this song while Wishing Gulzar Saab a very Happy Birthday today!!

Devnagri script Lyrics (Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)
