Hullo Atuldom
“Jab Andhera Hota Hai” was the title of the song that played with the titles of the Sharmila Tagore- Rajesh Khanna starrer “Raja Rani” which released in 1973. This is that song.
Soon after, in 1974, Deepak Bahry directed a movie which was titled “Jab Andhera Hota Hai”; which was a Kailash Chpora production. That film had music by Sapan Chakraborty, & Gulshan Bawra was the lyricist. Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder Singh & Nitin Mukesh gave their voices to the four songs of the film.
The following two are already on the blog.
| Song | Date of post |
|---|---|
| Zindagee ka maza pyaar se leejiye jee | 27 October 2013 |
| Jaane jaan meree kasam tujhko roothh ke yoon na jaa </td. | 29 October 2024 |
The movie, “Jab Andhera Hota Hai”, had Prema Narayan as the leading lady in one of the four or five initial films of her career as actress, post which she was mostly seen in supporting roles, with a few having her dance to lively songs. Vikram, who gained some fame in films like ‘Julie’ & ‘Aadmi Sadak Ka’ was the hero in this film. Madan Puri, Prem Chopra, Helen, Dulari, Anita Guha, Chandrashekhar, Sajjan, Naaz, Keshto Mukherjee, Jalal Agha, Gulshan Bawra etc. were the others in the cast.
Not much is known about the film other than that it was a crime/ drama/ mystery film with a fair dose of romance thrown in. The story, a remake of “the Boston Strangler & Frenzy” (don’t know what that movie was) was as follows (from what I read on various sites):
“The city is rocked by a serial killer who only kills young women at night, so women don’t want to step outside the house when it turns dark. Vikram works for smuggler Sohanlal (Madan Puri) to support his family. He saves Roma (Prema Narayan) after she is drugged at a her party and gets her home safely. They fall in love and want to get married. Vikram finds that Roma is daughter of his boss Sohanlal, who won’t let them marry as Vikram’s life is always at risk he wants Roma to marry Pratap Saxena (Prem Chopra), who has a disturbed past and can’t get over the thought of being ditched by his wife Alka (Helen). Vikram tries to be unfaithful to Roma & tries to stay away from her.He is also suspected to be the serial killer.”
After this the film probably meanders to the usual end, where the audience may find that Prem Chopra was the killer & Vikram & Prema Narayan live happily ever after.
I found out a few hours back that 23rd August is the anniversary of musician, music arranger, singer and film music composer Sapan Chakraborty. On googling for details about him I found that many of the RD Burman songs that we love to this date, had Sapan Chakraborty as arranger & assistant music director. Not much is known about his early career, but he rose in prominence after he joined RD Burman’s team.
He became a key member of R.D. Burman’s team and tried his hand at singing and even writing lyrics. Sapan Chakraborty worked with R.D. Burman almost till the end of RD era. Sapan himself was a very good musician as well as a singer. Other quality which must be mentioned here is that he was a good lyricist and has written many of R.D.Burman’s Bengali pooja numbers. He himself has composed music for 5 Hindi and 15 Bengali films. Highlight of his career as a music director was Amitabh starred movie ‘Zameer’ (1975) and ’36 Ghante’ (1974).
R.D. Burman parted ways with Sapan Chakraborty towards the end of his career and Sapan moved to Calcutta to pursue a career as an independent music director in Bengali movies.
Sapan Chakraborty passed away on 23rd August 1995, a year after his mentor R.D.Burman’s death.
We have a few songs sung by Sapan Chakraborty on the blog:
‘Aao re aao khelo holi‘ from ‘Baalika Badhu’.
‘Pyaar hamen kis mod pe le aaya ‘, ‘Dukki pe dukki ho ya satte pe satta ‘, ‘Hey zindagi mil ke bitaayenge‘ from ‘Satte Pe Satta.’
‘Golmaal hai bhai sab golmaal hai ‘ from ‘Golmaal’
‘Kaayda kaayda aakhir faayda‘ from ‘Khoobsurat’ etc.
If we dig deeper on our blog we will come up with more songs that have his vocals (the above songs are what I thought up at once) The blog has 13 songs of Sapan Chakraborty as music director & 13 as singer as per the SOME STATS! tab of the blog (13 in two categories, interesting).
Remembering this singer, music arranger/director Sapan Chakraborty with an unusual song. Why is this unusual, because it is sung by Nitin Mukesh in a style that is not what we are accustomed to hear from Nitin Mukesh. Watching the song endorses the part of the story where Vikram becomes unfaithful to Prema Narayan (Roma)
Song-Chaahe Mona ho ya Meena chaahe Barkha ho ya Heena(Jab Andhera Hota Hai)(1974) Singer-Nitin Mukesh, Lyrics-Gulshan Bawra, MD-Sapan Chakraborty
Lyrics
chaahe mona ho ya meena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
chaahe mona ho ya meena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
apne liye
sab ek hain
chaahe mona ho ya meena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
humne har ek haseen ko
samjha rangeen khilauna
ek aur naya le lenge
koi toota to kaahe ka rona
humne har ek haseen ko
samjha rangeen khilauna
ek aur naya le lenge
koi toota to kaahe ka rona
is rang ka apna hai jeena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
is rang ka apna hai jeena
chahe barkha ho ya heena
apne liye
sab ek hain
kaheen zulfon ke saaye mein soye
kaheen baahon ke ghere mein jaage
ye rang bhare paimaane
chhalkenge humaare aage
kaheen zulfon ke saaye mein soye
kaheen baahon ke ghere mein jaage
ye rang bhare paimaane
chhalkenge humaare aage
seekha hai nazar se peena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
seekha hai nazar se peena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
apne liye sab ek hain
chaahe mona ho ya meena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
chaahe mona ho ya meena
chaahe barkha ho ya heena
apne liye
sab ek hain
apne liye
sab ek hain

Nitin Mukesh tried very hard but couldn’t become as successful as he would have liked.
Some of his songs are very iconic like “So Gaya Yeh Jahan” and those from Kranti.
Good one Nalini Ji.
